She looked down at the toast and she felt herself pale. Her sick
stomach was a clue. A damning one. Sweet Faranth, it couldn't be true.
She sat back and slowly, almost fearfully, lightly pressed at the side
of her breast, then winced. Tender. Extremely so. She'd even not laced
herself as tightly as she normally did. She hadn't even thought of
it...She thought of the other symptoms that she had blithely ignored.
Her sleepiness. Her feeling of heaviness.
She felt her hands tremble. *Sweet Faranth, it can't be. It can't. I'm
too old for child bearing.* She pressed her hands to her abdomen. It
was disaster, for not only was she a widow, but she knew full well
would have fathered the child that might be growing within her. *If I
am...I'm carrying Bryvin's bastard. * She swallowed, feeling even more
ill. A bastard. She would be ruined completely.
Before she completely panicked, Yriadha took deep breaths. She had to
make a plan. A coherent plan before she made any decision. She had to
move carefully now, else she'd lose everything.
"Yriadha," Bryvin said as he entered her office with a hide dangling
from his fingers. "I have a question about the tithe." He shut the
door firmly on her assistant and turned the lock before walking across
the room. He took in the toast and her pallor. "Are you alright," he
frowned. Not that he really cared as much as she didn't look her
normal healthy self.
"My Lord..." She immediately rose, her hands unconsciously flying to
her abdomen and tightening. She swallowed hard and glanced back at her
toast, completely unprepared for his entrance and unable to offer an
immediate lie. Instead, she turned a little green.
"..well...no...I..." She stammered, trying to force her mouth to form
the words she needed it to.
His eyes narrowed slightly and he cocked his head. There was nothing
smooth and assured in her response and a suspicion lit a twinkle. So
he dropped the hide on her desk, that was the pretext of his visit,
and stepped closer. Pulling her to him as he normally would his kissed
her hard while his other hand reached into her bodice and squeezed one
plump globe.
"Wait, I.." Her mouth was sealed beneath his before she could finish
what she was going to say. Normally, Yriadha would have immediately
responded by encouraging Bryvin's touch and draping her body
seductively against his own. She was simply too unsettled for her body
to go into instant arousal. Instead, the moment he squeezed her, she
yelped against his mouth and pulled away, covering her sore breast
with her hand. "Shaffit, Bryvin, that hurt!"
He chuckled shifting around her to sit in her chair and pull her into
his lap. His hand just coincidentally landed directly and rather
possessively on her abdomen. "I'm sorry," he said without meaning a
word. But no matter what she said, this confirmed what he'd thought
when the report had reached him. He hadn't specifically asked to watch
for this but his spy was nothing if not thorough. "Shall I kiss it
and make it better?"
"You are not and no, you shall not." Yriadha's voice was quick and
revealed her distress far more than she liked. He was keeping her far
too off kilter and she needed to regain her equilibrium. How could she
have not known? After seven children, she should have picked up on the
symptoms immediately! Her eyes went down to his hand on her abdomen
and her gaze flew up to his face. How could he know? She just
realized! He couldn't know. She carefully took his hand and moved it
to her thigh. She cleared her voice, trying to muster some smidgen of
control over the situation. "I'm just a little ill today, my Lord."
Her voice attempted primness.
"Ill," he questioned with a raised eyebrow. Then he appeared to make a
decision. "Very well," he said setting her on her feet. He leaned in
and kissed her cheek before he picked up the hide. "I'll come to you
tonight Yriadha. Perhaps you should rest. I'm sure your assistants can
handle the rest of today for you." He patted her bottom and went to
the door.
"Thank you Headwoman he said as he pulled the door open. That explains
it to my satisfaction." He couldn't help the tiny smile that curved
his lips as he left.

She did go back to her home as he suggested and for the first time,
struggled to come up with a concrete plan of action. She wrote down
several options and ideas as she sat at her desk. Among them included
ridding herself of the child, which was quite promptly scratched
through. She didn't see that as an option and it was far too risky at
her age. Another was to leave the hold with Torinya and return with
Torinya bearing a new child. There was a question mark beside that
one. Her brow knit as she scribbled. Bear the child. Another question
mark. Exhausted, she laid her head on her arms on the desk and within
moments, she was asleep.
"You should have laid down to take your nap," a voice said softly next
to the sleeping headwoman.
The soft voice penetrated Yriadha's sleep and she groggily lifted her
head, blinking sleepy eyes. "Hm?"
Bryvin just leaned over to quickly scan the piece of paper and it's
damning list. He did note the one entry that had been struck through
before he bent further down to pick her up. Then he carried her to the
bed and laid her on it. "So," he sat on the edge looking at her. "You
want to tell me?"
She wasn't fully awake and was still disoriented when Bryvin picked
her up. The slight jostling finished drawing her fully into
consciousness, and when he laid her down, she knew from his expression
that he had seen her notes. She wanted to curse herself for writing
them out at all; her brain obviously was working against her. Yriadha
just looked at him and her lips thinned. "I'm with child." Her voice
was curt. Left unsaid was the obvious. That it was his, that she was
unwed and that it certainly hadn't been planned.
"It's mine, " he said with out any preamble. He knew, because Bryvin
had his own spies.
She nodded a brusque agreement. There was no point in denying it.
She'd not had any other lovers but him since her husband. "Yes." She
sat up in the bed, her face drawn. "I suppose it will be the first
bastard born to you."
"That I know of, yes. I am usually very careful about things like
that," he nodded. "Quite the list of options you have over there."
"I don't believe either of us considered that I might still be able to
bear a child." She didn't back down from his gaze, but still sitting a
bit stiffly. "There are only a few options" She agreed. "All
considered, I do have to have a plan. I'm a widow and he passed Turns
ago. Nor have I been seen with any man in a social setting. "
"And do you want a husband?" Bryvin asked with the intent to procure a
compliant one for her if she needed it.
Her brows rose immediately, then snapped down. If it had been anyone
else, she would have said yes, but Bryvin would have known immediately
that it wasn't truthful. "No, I do not desire a husband." She sniffed.
"I have become used to having my quarters to myself and have no desire
to share them with a man that I have no desire for, even if it would
give this child legitimacy. I enjoy what freedoms I have. " Her brow
furrowed. "There are only three other options that can be taken." She
thought of what she had written, then paused, eyeing him. "You have
not said whether or not you want me to bear your bastard."
He watched the changes in her face. He'd never seen this woman quite
so off balance and he found he enjoyed the sense of power it gave him
to know he was inside her and owned that part of her right now. It was
quite different than what he'd felt when Xeladrie had told him she was
expecting. But then his relationship with Yriadha was far more
tempestuous and... athletic. She certainly knew how to pleasure him
in all the ways a woman's body could. So from that first time until
now he'd not stayed out of her bed more than a sevenday or so.
"Good," he said simply. "I do not desire to share your talents," he
said and bent down to kiss her neck the way he knew she liked. He
moved up to nibble her ear. "Yes," he breathed hot into her ear. "Give
me my bastard."
She tried to resist the shiver of arousal from his lips, but it was
there, if somewhat muted, as she tried to stay focused. "I'll be
ruined." She closed her eyes and pulled away, even as her cheeks
flushed from her desire for him. "I could rid myself of it." She
stated softly, testing out the idea on him. "Or leave with Torinya
long enough to bear it and her husband can claim it."
"No," he said simply and his hand slid up her leg to touch her in the
spot that never failed to please him. "You will not. No other man will
claim my child Yriadha. I will claim it and you."

She had barely felt him fall upon her; her legs were shaking, she was out
of breath and she felt completely limp. He had brought her to a
shattering release and all she could do was tremble in the
aftershocks. Her eyes opened, hazy as she felt him get up and then
giver her a pat on her cheek; she turned to look at him with half
closed eyes. Her face was the picture of erotic satisfaction, thoroughly ravaged and sated.
He reached a hand to rest on her abdomen. "Mine,"..."You have only one
option," he said. "You will keep the child."
At his words, Yriadha gave a soft pant of murmured acknowledgment "Yes,
m'lord."
Satisfied, Bryvin walked to the desk and picked up the notes, he half
smiled as he crossed out everything but "Tell Bryvin."
"I'll have eggs and sausage at breakfast," he said as he walked out the door.
