**Almost there** C'rin thought as he finished up his chores for the
day. There wasn't much more to Weyrlinghood before he and Dasveth
would be graduating and joining one of the fighting Wings. He'd heard
some horror stories about Weyrlinghood when he was a Candidate, but
he'd found it not much different than being a Candidate, except having
Dasveth to care for.
He'd promised his mother that they would have lunch together and catch
up, he'd been busy with lessons and chores for the past few months and
she'd had Keseran to look after.
Walking into the Dining Cavern, he spotted her by her red hair, and
went to join her. "There's the prettiest greenrider I know," she
kissed his mother's cheek and sat down across from her.
She smiled up at her boy. "And how's my favorite brownrider today?"
Then as he sat, "Good to see you."
"How is Keseran?" he asked.
"Teething," she said with a grimace. That was always fun when the baby
had to chew on anything and everything. "But he is a happy little guy
most of the time."
"Can you tell yet if he's going to have red hair?" C'rin had been
lucky enough to receive the same dark, red color of hair that his
mother had.
"Oh yes," she grinned at her son. "He's got a nice little crop of
peach colored fuzz on his head. But babies hair is always lighter.
Yours was like that."
He reached up and ran a hand over his short, cropped hair, "Aye, I'm
thankful for it. I've seen a few Weyrlings my age who already look
thin on top." Some dragonriders pulled off being bald, but C'rin was
attached to his hair- thank you very much.
"My father died before I was born," she said. Though she knew he
already knew that. "But they said he had a full head of hair to the
end. So, I think you're safe."
"I hope so, although the grizzled, bald veteran look seems to work for
some." He tilted his head in the direction of T'larn, a close-to-retirement
bronzerider with a jagged scar down his face who still had plenty of younger
women vying for his attention.
Cirara laughed and pushed her son's shoulder affectionately. "You're
far from grizzled, besides I'm not old enough to have a grizzled son.
Well..." she couldn't help herself. "Maybe a grizzled weyrmate."
"No comment," C'rin held up his hands. A drudge brought around a
pitcher of klah and the young brownrider helped himself to a cup. "So
in a few sevendays Dasveth will be ready to start chasing greens. It
seems like yesterday I was chopping up his food for him."
Ciara smiled. "All dragonriders go through that," she patted his hand.
"You will have to keep an eye out to know when its time to take him
away."
"Take him away?" he asked.
"Yes," she nodded and kept looking at her food so she wouldn't
embarrass him. "When Ellianith rises, you need to go."
"Um, yeah, I'd like as much warning as you can give." C'rin laughed a little.
"As much as I can give," she smiled. "Have you been checking out the
possibilities? There are some pretty young greenriders out there."
C'rin shrugged a little, "It's been kind of hard between Weyrlings
classes, and there's not any girls in Dasveth's class that I would be
very interested in." Most of the girls he'd dated before Impressing
were still non-dragonriders, so they didn't really apply for flights.
Ciara hadn't been a hovering mom but she'd always been observant where
her children were concerned. "Well I know of a few you might like,"
she said slowly. "You'll want to spend some time with some of them of
course or Dasveth will wear himself out chasing the ones you aren't interested
in and then when one rises you might like he won't be interested. You
should use your influence to get him flirting with the right greens."
He couldn't help but be intrigued by who his mother might think was an
interesting greenrider. "Okay, so who are these right greens?"
"Well being a greenrider myself I'm pretty well aware of them. They
usually end up coming through the queens wing at some point or other."
She tapped a finger against her lips in thought for a moment, "but if
I was going to suggest it might be Taliera, or maybe Floresa, maybe
even Riveenvata. But she's probably too pretty for you."
C'rin quirked his head at that, "How can someone be too pretty?"
"You'll see," she grinned back at him. "Just don't stand there with
your mouth hanging open when you meet her."
