After dropping his stuff back home and reuniting with his family, Naton knew he should report in with his Hallmaster. He hoped Endarin understood him choosing to check in with his family first, having only seen his newborn so little in her first sevendays. He was there now though and he knocked at his office door briskly.
"Come in," Endarin called, tossing down the list of people that invites were going to be sent to for the upcoming ceremony at the Dolphin Hall. He was glad that Jylanya was such a capable Headwoman and that the most important thing he had to do was just make sure the right people were on the list to be invited.
Naton stepped in hand tipped an imaginary hat to his Hallmaster in greeting. "Master Naton reporting for duty, Sir," he said, attempting to look serious, but with those ever-dancing lights still in his eyes.
"You're back," Endarin gestured to a chair. "Have a seat, tell me about your trip. You can turn in your formal report tomorrow."
Naton gladly took the Hallmaster up on his offer and pulled up the chair. "It was a bit exhausting, to be honest, so much action so close after our search for Master Thayde," Naton admitted. "But we managed to locate the sunken vessel and retrieve the cargo. The Holders were quite grateful."
"I imagine that they were. What sort of cargo were they carrying?" he asked.
"Crates with supplies for the Smiths. So lots of raw material. It took some time getting everything up, but if we hadn't been able to help, they'd would have lost more than a fair share of income and been in serious trouble," Naton replied, remembering well how stressed the cargo's owner had been over it's loss.
Endarin gave a nod, pleased that they were able to make themselves useful to another craft, it helped garner favors down the road should they need it.
"Well, you're back just in time to start thinking about the upcoming table walking. I understand from Famell's notes that you've worked with the apprentices. Who do you anticipate will be ready to be tapped to journeyman status?"
Naton considered this for only a moment. He knew their apprentices well and didn't have to think on this question long. "Tramli and Feston for sure. Leeson I'm not entirely sure about yet. He's dead set on specializing in cartography, but I'm not sure he is ready for that yet. Maybe given more time or in another speciality..." Someone would have to talk to the lad, see how much cartography meant to him.
"As for junior apprentices ready to make senior, that is Milga for sure and Petim, Estrak and Lefmir as well. The rest of them just aren't quite there yet." He really hoped Endarin's view on female crafters wouldn't get in the way of Milga's career. If it did, he knew he would have to go up against Endarin about it. The girl had worked hard and was ready for the next step.
Endarin checked the names Naton mentioned against the list he had already begun to compile as he talked with the Masters. "What makes you think that Leeson is not ready for journeyman status? Is it a lack of content knowledge or a problem with maturity?"
"Well," Naton said, his brow knotting in thought. "He's a people's person, you know? I'd much sooner see him working in Dolphin Diagnosis of Humans, it would fall into his natural skill range. His cartography... it's not that he's not good enough per se, but it doesn't come naturally. He has to work so hard for it, I wonder if he'll be able to keep up when the pace picks up. I've been trying to get him to open up to me about why he's so set on that specialization, but so far no luck."
Just because the boy had a natural ability for working with people didn't mean he should be forbidden to pursue the specialization that he wanted, Endarin felt, but he respected Naton's opinion enough to keep it to himself for the moment. "There's no rush for him to pick a specialty, he can still be promoted to Journeyrank and then take classes in both areas until he decides what he wants to do."
"That's open-minded of you," Naton said appreciatively. "Would you allow me to keep tabs on the boy and coach him a little further through this process? I'd like to find his reasons for wanting Cartography and see if they come from his own desire, or something he feels he needs to do for some external reason."
"Of course, just keep in mind that it is his decision, regardless of his reasons. I've found a crafter much happier in their place if it's something that they chose themselves." Endarin cautioned.
"Exactly, if they choose themselves," Naton replied. He still had his suspicions Leeson wanted to be a cartographer because his father. He'd met the Seacrafter once and he didn't have much respect for anything the Hall did besides aiding sailors. He paused for a moment, looking at Endarin thoughtfully. "Sir, may I offer my opinion on something I know is out of my jurisdiction?"
That piqued Endarin's curiosity, "Please, speak freely." He told the Mastercrafter.
"I'm not sure if you've already decided on the Sr. Journeyman promotions, but I would like to recommend Journeywoman Irabel for a Master's promotion. It is my opinion she meets all the qualifications and has done the work."
"A step ahead of you there, I'm afraid, I've already asked her about being promoted in the area of Search and Rescue to Master. She'll be walking the tables at this ceremony." Endarin knew that the woman had another speciality in dolphineering that she was working on as well and would most likely continue to persue.
Naton smiled in obvious contentment. "That is good to hear. I'm glad for her. Does she know herself yet?"
"She does. I called her in to talk about it a few days after she came back from the Weyr with Thayde."
"That is good to know," Naton said, relieved that he didn't have this awesome secret to keep. That wasn't his greatest strength. "Well, that was all that was on my mind at the moment. Do you have anything else you would like to discuss?"
Endarin shook his head and took back up his invitations list, "You're free to go."
