Corofel

Corofel

"So tell me bout all this stuff happening around the Hold lately?" The
bronzerider put another tuber into his mouth and chewed. He frowned
with concern over at his friend. Corofel was older, of course, and
wasn't stupid. However, if the Lord Holder here was a target, then
maybe another Lord's Heir could easily be as well.

"Meh, everyone's tense and nervous," Corofel replied, "With all those
messages written on walls and such," he continued. "I can't go
anywhere without a guard trailing after me. I don't get what they have
against Zathris, he's nice." Corofel wasn't overly concerned of his
own security, being in the age where you felt invulnerable and
invincible.

"What are they writing?" R'gelen was quite interested. After what had
happened to Genna at Emerald Falls, unrest at Amber Hills was a bit
unsettling. He had lived there! He knew people there! "Do you think
maybe... I mean all those holders got mad at Emerald Falls and your
Dad was there...maybe they've come here to get mad at Lord Zathris
too?" Hopefully it didn't have anything to do with Corofel being at
Amber Hills though that was a coincidence not to be ignored perhaps.
"They taught me self defense in weyrlinghood. Don't they teach you
that as an Heir?"

"Some wher dung about Zathris not being able to protect the Hold or
such. I don't think they are same people as Emerald Falls'. Too much a
distance and regular people don't really travel that lot. As for self
defense-yeah, they teach me that. I've been given lessons in sword
fighting and boxing. I really loved Zandan's unarmed fighting
lessons-He knows all the dirty tricks," Corofel replied. He smirked a
little when he remembered Zandan's tricks.

"What's the point of putting up messages like that? After all, if they
were true even..all it would do is scare people." The young
bronzerider couldn't figure people out sometimes. This seemed so
simple to his mind which accepted authority without issue thanks to
his background and experiences. "You box? I want to learn how to be a
good boxer."

"Yeah, I box some. They don't let me take part of those Gather matches
though, too dangerous," he made a face. "Hey, we could spar sometime,
maybe I can teach you!" He got really excited over the idea.

"Yeah okay but you have to promise to wear all manner of padding and
safety gear. I don't want to be responsible for breaking the nose of
the future Lord of Emerald Falls. What would your future Lady Holder
say?" He shook his head, revealing that some of his curls had come
back since he'd last trimmed his hair to fit under the helmet.

"Sure, but you really think you can break my nose?" Corofel replied
with a bit of a challenge. "You don't even reach my nose," he teased
his friend. R'gelen hadn't reached his height yet, although Corofel
wasn't that tall and never would be.

"First rule-never underestimate your opponent," the bronzerider
quipped. Despite his size, he was strong. He had some growing to do,
but weyrling training and continually having to handle Iroth's care
had made noticeable differences in his physical form already. "Plus I
bet I'm faster than you are." His brown eyes twinkled, reveling in the
opportunity to tweak Corofel's ego which didn't happen often. The
lordling was a lot more worldly than he was, though he was doing what
he could to change that, little by little, since he could between and
explore all the places he had never seen.

"That's what Zandan says too," Corofel grinned good naturedly. "He is
like six and half feet tall and weighs twice as much as my dad and
still can't beat him when they spar," he continued, being proud of his
father. "Would Iroth eat me if I broke your nose?" he mused with a
thoughtful voice. Fighting a dragonrider might have unexpected
disadvantages.

"Not if he knew we were practicing. I had to practice during training
and he didn't eat anyone then." Shrugging his shoulders, R'gelen
didn't consider that a real concern. Iroth understood Corofel was his
friend. Dragons didn't eat friends. "I think my Ma might though if I
had a crooked nose when I saw her next."

Corofel found that hilarious for some reason.

Watching his friend laugh for a moment, R'gelen just smiled. He tried
to think if Corofel had met his parents at the Hatching. "Laugh it up.
I wouldn't put it past her. And she wouldn't even care that you were
the Heir. She'd tell your Dad to use one of your brothers." He
switched his voice into a higher falsetto that was clearly mocking his
mother. "If he thought he could harm my son, he was clearly a dimglow
anyhow."

"She would have to go through Erassa first," Corofel was wiping off
tears of laughter. He imagined his foster mother fighting R'gelen's
mother and had a new laughing fit.

R'gelen had never met Corofel's old fostermother. He just knew his
Amber Hills foster family. **Well maybe briefly the one time they'd
gone to the Gather at Emerald Falls.** He couldn't quite remember
though. Shaking his head, he waited until Corofel stopped snorting to
suggest maybe they could try sparring in a sevenday when he could get
free.
