A'kua almost couldn't contain his excitement. The eggs had been nested in clay jars and placed before one of the kitchen hearths, ready to be distributed and set to hatch by the end of the sevenday. Firelloa's egg was set aside for her to check on whenever she had the time, and next to it was the one reserved for someone else. Hopefully that someone would've gotten the message A'kua had asked a drudge to carry by now, and was on his way to get the gift.

Jessmyr re-checked his calculations once more before leaving the hide to Yanley's in-pile. The Headwoman and former Lady Holder didn't have anything against teaching him how to run a Weyr. Then he looked at the time and realized A'kua was waiting for him. He better hurry!

"Jess, there you are!" A'kua exclaimed on seeing his friend arrive, and waved him over. "C'mere, hurry. Look." He pointed to the pots. "I went to the beach with Ilyssia and Firelloa today, right? I found a fire-lizard clutch by accident." He showed the washed and bandaged scratched for proof. "And that one there?" He motioned to the pot he'd singled out. "It's a big one, so it's bound to be a bronze or brown. And it's all yours, Jess." He grinned at the other man. "You can teach him to carry messages, fetch small objects, find a person for assistance if you need it, anything that'll help you be a Headman."

Jess was struck speechless for a moment, not quite believing what he was hearing. "Let me check if I got this straight: you found a wild clutch and you want to give me one of the eggs? For free?"

"Absolutely," A'kua affirmed, still grinning. "I wouldn't charge one of my best friends for a gift. I know the trainin' might take a lot of your attention, but you could do it."

"You're bestest friend ever!" Jess squalled and did something he did rarely, since he wasn't one for physical shows of affection. He hugged him.

"Oof!" For someone as physically unwell as Jess, he sure could hug. It felt pretty good. A'kua found he liked seeing Jessmyr that happy. He hugged his friend in turn, patting him on the back.

"Thank you, thank you thankyou," Jess said and finally pulled away.

"You're welcome. More than welcome," the bronzerider stated, and nodded to the pot in question again. "The staff says the egg can stay here if you don't have a brazier to keep it warm, but you'll definitely have to check in on it. That won't be a problem, will it?"

"I can probably get a brazier for it," Jess said. He looked longingly at the eggs. "May I touch it?" he asked.

"It's yours now, you can do whatever you want with it," A'kua encouraged. "Don't be nervous."

Jess nodded and picked up the pot. He touched the egg carefully first, just feather light touch with the tip of his fingers. Encouraged the firm smoothness, he stroked the egg.

Excellent. It looked as though Jess was bonding with his future pet already. "Got any names you like, but never had a chance to use?" the bronzerider wanted to know after letting his friend have a few minutes to just look and feel.

"Names? You mean I have to give it a name? I need to think about that one," Jess replied.

A'kua gently clapped his friend on the shoulder. "Better think fast. He'll be with you before you know it," he advised. "And then, you'll never be the same."
