Digging Deeper Into History

Writers: Avery
Date Posted: 15th June 2017

Characters: L'pin
Description: L'pin digs deeper into J'ackt's past.
Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 12, day 13 of Turn 8

L'pin had not forgotten that he had promised to look into J'ackt's
origins. What he'd found at the Harper Hall had been a start, because it
had told him why the fight had occurred that had caused J'ackt's father to
be made Holdless.

He could have let the young man in on what he'd learned, but it still felt
like an incomplete story to him. He wanted more before he told J'ackt. Now
that he had the names of both parents, he'd be able to look up the
marriage records. Those would be at Emerald Falls Hold, so that's where he
headed when he had a few free candlemarks.

After L'pin dismounted, Chaneth took himself up to wait over by the Harper
Hall. He knew from his rider there was some unpleasantness around dragons
and their riders at the Hold lately and the blue knew his rider didn't
want to stir up trouble.

L'pin headed to the Archives and introduced himself to the man on duty
there. He volunteered that he was trying to track down familial relations
of a few Emerald Falls bred dragonriders so that the Weyr's records would
be accurate in case anything happened to one of those riders. They did
have a few riders searched from the Hold recently whose history he could
note down while he was here, so it wasn't entirely a fabrication.

The man seemed more confused about why a dragonrider was looking at Hold
records than he seemed concerned or hostile, which was good. L'pin hadn't
want to be rebuffed by an angry holder and contribute to any of the ill
feelings. He waved L'pin in and told him to put them back when he was
done.

The bluerider searched along the records index until he found where the
marriage records would be. Heading over to that section, he began flipping
through the marriage certificates, looking for around twenty or so Turns
back - he didn't know exactly how long after the marriage J'ackt had been
born. It took a bit of time before he found what he was looking for - the
marriage of Jenasom and Ocktima. The guard had been from this area, while
the mother had been from Far Island.

Far Island Weyr. Of course the records didn't have anything about why
she'd left. So Far Island would have to be his next stop for information.

**Why, that was on the opposite end of the Southern Continent!** he thought.

L'pin pondered this information. Why a weyrbred woman would leave the Weyr
environment of more liberalism to go to a Hold where she had fewer choices
was a mystery, and especially one so far away. The part where she'd
stayed after falling in love made more sense. But he knew how it ended, in
tragedy.

He spent a bit more time in the Hold's archives looking for some
information on other Emerald Falls born riders that would be useful for
Dolphin Cove's own records. Then he decided to head back to Dolphin Cove.
He wanted to keep pursuing this mystery, to find out more of where these
threads led before telling J'ackt anything. The boy might still have
relatives alive, and he wanted to know what they were like before talking
to J'ackt and either getting his hopes up or inspiring his anger.

Come to think of it, if he was going to be going to another Weyr to keep
digging into this, maybe he should update the Weyrleaders as well. Just so
they knew...
