K'ale

K'ale sat alone in the dining hall. It was late afternoon but felt
more like midnight to him. Of course he'd been at Dolphin Cove on rest
day and stayed there much too late. He nursed some Klah and just tried
to relax.

"You look like a man with a lot on his mind." S'vin plopped into the
seat beside K'ale. Behind him G'wen waved shyly.

"Hi guys," he said and leaned back in his chair. "Yeah," he smiled
knowing the other two would have no mercy. "How's Neath," he asked
G'wen.

"Okay since you didn't win her Flight," S'vin pipped in.

G'wen rolled his eyes, ignoring S'vin. "How're you? We haven't seen
you around much lately."

"Well, that would be because..." S'vin looked from G'wen to K'ale and
back again.

"Because..." K'ale said, rubbing a temple. "I've been at Dolphin Cove a lot."

"Oh...do tell!" S'vin sidled up to K'ale's elbow whilst G'wen raised
his eyebrows and mouthed "Do you want to talk about it?"

He looked straight at G'wen and shrugged. "You know he'll get it out
of me one way or another anyway."

"Get what?" S'vin pressed close to K'ale's side, a mischievous grin on his face.

G'wen's smile was much more sympathetic. "Oh, come on, S'vin, be
polite. If K'ale doesn't want to talk about his private life he
doesn't have do. You'll just have to go pester someone else."

"As long as that someone else isn't me," a new voice pipped in. Into
the last empty seat plopped Catrien. She heaved a heavy sigh before
throwing her riding gloves and hat onto the table. "Bloody sweeps, can
they be more boring?" Without waiting for an answer she added, "So
what's this private life that our brownrider is trying to keep
secret?"

K'ale closed his eyes and shook his head, he was never going to get
away not. "I have a relationship, alright?"

"Oh." Catrien's eyes went cold. She outwardly pretended indifference
by grabbing the nearest mug to her and swallowing the beer.

"Oh now really, that was mi--ouch!" S'vin grabbed his leg under the
table and turned to G'wen. "You really didn't have to do that you
know."

"Yes I did. And, please, just shut up for once in your life." The sad
look G'wen gave K'ale said he was sorry.

K'ale just twitched his eyebrows and rolled his eyes. "She's a sweet
girl and I care about her. So, you can just stop bugging me."

"Indeed." G'wen turned to S'vin. "And didn't your blue catch a sweet
girl just the other day? Care to tell us how the mating flight went?"

Catrien snorted her beer through her nose as S'vin spluttered and went red.

K'ale just shook his head at the others. And he hadn't missed the look
Cat had given him. He took a big breath and blew it out. "I asked her
to weyrmate and she said yes."

"Oh, that's nice," Catrien said in an all-too-bright voice. Before any
of the boys could say anything, she stood up. "Wow, it's getting late,
I think I'll get a shifty on."

S'vin blinked at her retreating back. "But it's early yet," he called
out to her. She ignored him and kept walking.

"G'wen raised an eyebrow at K'ale. "Sorry about that."

"Not your fault," K'ale shook his head. "No more than I'd expect from
her. We had a thing for awhile but it didn't end well. She's just not
happy with me no matter what I do."

"Yeah, don't worry mate, we know all about that," S'vin said, ignoring
the glare G'wen was giving him. "I don't blame you," he continued,
"she's always been a bossy little thing. Almost as bad as G'wen here!"

"If anyone would know about bossy it would be you, my friend." G'wen
smacked S'vin over the head before standing up. "Hey K'ale, sorry
about all this but I want to make sure Cat's okay. See you guys!" And
with that he was off in the same direction that Catrien had gone.

"Well, that just leaves you and me, lover." S'vin gave K'ale a suggestive look.

"Very funny," K'ale put down his own drink, stood and left the room in
another direction. **And these are my friends?**
