Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 2, day 1 of Turn 9
"You nervous?" Saibra asked.
"What do you think?" K'yne replied with a deep exhale.
There was a part of the brownrider that had hoped J'ackt would never
want to meet him, or see him, because then what he'd been told wasn't
true, that Ocktima had kept his child from him and allowed that
bastard Jenasom to raise him.
The pair was seated in the council room adjoined to Saibra's office,
the safest place to meet without a bunch of people seeing.
"I believe Saidrene is coming with him," Saibra said.
"Why?" K'yne turned and looked at the Weyrwoman.
Saibra hesitated for a moment before saying, "They're close."
J'ackt walked more slowly than usual, letting Saidrene lead the way
towards the council room. Every muscle felt tight and coiled and his
shoulders held a tenseness that he could not ease. When the urge came
to simply turn on his heel and leave, he had to remind himself that
he was doing this for Saidrene's benefit and that she needed to know.
"I don't like this." He said, for what must have been the tenth time.
Saidrene stopped and turned to look at him, "It'll be over before you
know it, and then it'll be put to rest. What you do after today will
be up to you." She gave him what she hoped was an encouraging smile as
she put her hand on the door. "Here we go," she pushed the door open.
Following her inside, his gaze immediately found Saibra and then
darted to the man beside her. His eyes immediately narrowed and he
tensed, stopping at the door. He recognized the man from his last
visit to the Weyr. Him? It was him?! His fists clenched immediately in
response and he tensed; everything in him screamed to lunge at the man
and throttle him.
K'yne was having a very similar reaction, his cobalt eyes were
narrowed, brow slightly furrowed. _This_ was his son? He remembered
J'ackt's face vividly, he'd walked in on him visiting Saibra before,
he remembered thinking the young bronzerider touched her with too much
familiarity... He shot a look at Saibra that she read easily.
"We'll talk about it later," she murmured before looking back up.
"J'ackt, this is K'yne, K'yne this is J'ackt, I see it's clear you two
remember each other from before."
Controlling his temper was growing more and more difficult. This was
the man that had abandoned his mother, who had left her to be
miserable. His eyes flicked over K'yne's face and with difficulty
spoke through gritted teeth. "Did you do it? Did you bed my mother
when she was at Emerald Falls?"
K'yne's eyes flashed, an expression Saidrene had rarely ever seen from
her level-headed uncle, and his jaw tightened.
}:Remember, they warned you he would be uncouth.:{ Arinoth passed
along the message from Saibra.
He could hear his teeth creaking in his head from how hard they were
clenched. K'yne felt the need to protect Ocktima's honor, the way
J'ackt said it made it seem like something wrong or dirty had
happened, and Ocktima had never been that way.
"I did," he said finally.
Red began to tinge his vision as his pupil's widened. One hand
clenched along his side, instinctively reaching for the blade that
Saidrene had suggested he leave behind. "You left her." His balance
shifted slowly as his eyes flicked over K'yne.
}: Chioneth, he must be calmed. :{ Zith's plea was suddenly urgent. }:
He will fight Arinoth's if he is not calmed and I do not wish to see
him punished again. :{
Chioneth spoke to Zith in a firm tone, }:You have the influence to
calm him, Zith. Use it.:{ To her rider she said, }:Zith's is on the
edge.:{ As if Saibra couldn't tell that for herself.
Saidrene reached down and put her hand on J'ackt's forearm, the one
closest to the blade.
"I didn't leave her," K'yne said, noting how easily agitated the boy
got. Saibra side-stepped so that she was standing directly in front of
K'yne, facing J'ackt, the top of her head barely reached to the
brownrider's collarbone. It was the best way she knew to keep J'ackt
from lashing out at K'yne, she knew he wouldn't hurt her.
}: Mine you must calm. Calm! You can not fight him.:{ The bronze sent
clearly remembered images of injuries, digging trenches and trouble.
}: Calm. He poses no threat. :{
J'ackt gave a mental snarl prepared to vent his anger and frustration
physically, but was stopped by the gentle hand on his arm and the
sight of Saibra stepping between himself and K'yne. He looked down to
Saidrene, saw the concern on her face and let his breath out as a hiss
between his teeth. For the moment, he focused on her, breathing hard
before speaking softly. "Tell me. Is it him, Saidrene?"
Saidrene looked into J'ackt's eyes, which she could now see looked so
like her uncle's, "It's him, J'ackt."
For an instant J'ackt said nothing, his jaw tensing and releasing as
he studied her face. Then he turned away, cursing volubly, spitting
out every curse he could think of in response. He ran his hand
through his hair and over his face, keeping his back to all of them.
His voice was strained. "Well, now you know." He strode to the door,
opened it and stepped out, slamming it behind him as he made for his
bronze.
}:Don't let your rider's emotions muddle your coordinates /between/.:{
Chioneth spoke to Zith in a calming tone.
Saidrene sighed as she turned back and looked at her mother and uncle,
"I'd better go after him. At least.... Now everybody knows." The
corner of her mouth lifted marginally before she turned and left.
K'yne's heart was still pounding in his ears. "That's my... My son?"
He turned disbelieving eyes onto Saibra.
"Yes, I know he isn't what you expected but....He is your son." The
meeting had gone about as she had expected.
"You seem awfully familiar with him," K'yne spat, eyes hard.
The words brought a visibly painful expression to Saibra's eyes, "Yes,
well, I cannot see into the future can I?"
The brownrider turned and flipped the chair nearest him, sending it
crashing violently against the wall. Saibra flinched only a little,
but stood beside of K'yne, knowing he needed somewhere to place his
frustration and disappointment.
K'yne put his hands down on the table, gripping the edges with
whitened knuckles as he breathed heavily and closed his eyes. Little
by little his breathing slowed, until finally he straightened, and ran
his fingers through his hair, smoothing it back. "Well, I guess that's
that then." Without looking back at her, K'yne strode to the door and
left, marginally calmer than his son had a few moments prior.
