Harki yawned. Drills in the rain had given her a chill, and so she'd
camped out in one of the soaking pools after dinner to swap stories
with friends and chase the cold from her bones. It was getting late
and the pools were starting to clear, leaving their little knot of
women to themselves in the far corner of the hot tub. "I don't know
what I'd do if I retired. I think I'd miss Thread if the Pass ended."
Paetri's hand dabbled in the warm water, soaking up to her shoulders.
She balled up her wet hair on top of her head in a sloppy bun and
leaned against the ledge. "I wouldn't. I'd be glad. But I suppose we'd
all have to find something else to do."
Rorela copied Harki's yawn. "Like she said. Boring. I remember."
"There isn't much for dragonmen to do. Lots of watch duty, messages,
passengers and carrying things. Although that fell mainly to the
bigger dragons." Harki leaned back against the lip of the pool and
closed her eyes. "We still couldn't live anywhere but the Weyr. And
holders hated us way more back then."
"And there were much smaller clutches." Rorela added. "But there were
crafts that we could do." She pointed out.
"Well, maybe." Paetri agreed. "I don't see that as a bad thing. I
could craft if I had to."
"Ugh, don't do it. Crafting is _awful_." Harki shook her head. "Did
you know I was apprenticed to the Bakers here?"
"Don't ever ask her to bake you anything unless you like the taste of
dough." Rorela piped up. "Trust me."
"I remember." Paetri nodded with a grin at Harki and Rorela. "It's
better than being a spinster at a hold. That's what I was looking
forward to."
"I dunno. Being a spinster sounds better than being married. Could you
imagine?" Harki folded her hands under her chin and batted her
eyelashes. "Oh husband dearest! I have baked you coooo-kies! Let me
kiss your feee-eeet!"
Paetri burst out laughing. "That's really not how it is, you know. I
never saw my mother act like that at all."
"I'm pretty sure that's exactly how they acted when you weren't
looking. Whereas being a spinster probably means that you get to go to
all the parties and get drunk and nobody cares because you don't have
a man to embarrass by drinking him under the table." Harki winked at
Paetri. "I'd bet you'd make a pretty good spinster."
"No, I wouldn't have. I would have been miserable and viewed as a
burden." She replied honestly. "I wanted to get married, believe it or
not. But I wasn't seen as pretty and I'm too skinny to risk having
children. " She shrugged and then grinned. "But I don't have to worry
about that at all now. And I'm glad of it!"
Rorela wrinkled her nose. "Holders are stupid." When Paetri arched a
brow at her, she rolled her eyes. "Okay, okay...their traditions are
stupid."
"Besides, it doesn't matter. You have J'kri and he thinks you're
pretty." Harki grinned at Paetri. "How is J'kri these days, anyway?"
Paetri looked at ease as she kicked lightly in the water. Flashing a
wide wicked smile, one that she had only recently began to display,
she examined her fingernails. "I keep him busy." She couldn't help but
look a little smug. "Very busy."
Harki exchanged a proud look with Rorela. "That's what I like to hear."
Rorela grinned and winked at Harki. "So...how busy? Like tie him up
and pounce kind of busy, or just make his eyes roll up in his head
busy?" She leaned forward, waggling her brows.
"Wouldn't you like to know?" Paetri looked even more smug.
"Well...duh. Yeah. That's why I'm asking."
"You know, if you ever pinned G'nir down, you wouldn't have to mooch
vicariously off of my time with my weyrmate."
"You could say to him, helloooooo G'nir, I baked you coooo-kies!"
Harki batted her eyelashes at Rorela. "On second thought, say that to
him anyway. He might have a heart attack!"
Rorela mock scowled at both of them. "G'nir and I haven't been
spending time together." She sniffed and eyed Harki, putting on her
own falsetto. "Oh, Ma'din, here's my dough...bake it for me, baby,
bake it!"
Paetri choked and began to splutter with laughter, the idea of either
of them addressing the men like that utterly impossible. An idea
formed in her mind. "I dare you both. I double dare you both to do
that. Where the other two of us can see." She grinned, rubbing her
hands together. "Just to see the looks on their faces..."
"Sure. What do I get if I do it?" Harki asked.
"Rorela has to streak the Dining Hall."
Rorela made a "pft" noise. "I did that as a Candidate."
Paetri groaned. "I should have known. Well, I'm not going to streak
so..." She mused, tapping her fingers over her lower lip as she eyed Rorela.
Rorela grinned. "If you actually do it, then I'll clean your weyr for
a week. So what do I get?"
"If I back out?" Harki snorted. "Like that's ever going to happen. If
I fail in my mission, I'll clean _your_ weyr for a week." She was a
terrible housekeeper and they both knew it.
Rorela's arched a brow. "Oh, shards no. That's punishment for me." she
shuddered.
Paetri looked between the both of them. "I have an idea. And I think
you both have been a bad influence on me, but if either one of you
don't follow through, you have to offer yourself to K'reyel and on
your knees...like the good little Hold woman that you imagine."
"Hoo, that would earn me latrine duty for a sevenday!" Harki shook her
head. "Sure. But you're going to lose."
"He might just take you up on it." Rorela grinned. "Or me, even.
That's something that's almost worth the losing the bet for. Besides
I'm short enough that if I was on my knees, I could..."
"Okay, " Paetri interrupted. "We get the picture. So...when are you doing this?"
Harki shrugged. "Tomorrow? I bet I can track Ma'din down in the Dining
Cavern. Man's gotta eat."
Rorela grinned. "And it'll surprise the stuffing out of him. He
doesn't really get embarrassed, but you can shock him." Her grin was
malicious. "Oh, I can't wait."
"What about G'nir?" Paetri pointed out. "When are you going to do him?"
"Whenever he decides he's willing to try again." Rorela arched her brows.
"That's not what I meant." Paetri groaned. "Harki, help me out here."
"You have a sevenday. And that's being generous." Harki grinned. At
least Ma'din had a sense of humor. Both G'nir and Rorela had more
dignity than she and Ma'din did. This challenge was going to be much
harder for the Wingthird.
Rorela wrinkled her nose."Let me guess, I can't warn him that I'm doing it?"
"That's cheating, Rorela." Paetri shook her head. "No cheating."
Harki held out her hand. "One sevenday. Shake on it?"
Rorela sighed and took Harki's hand. "One sevenday. "
