D'ale

D'ale

A bad night's sleep and the early morning was showing clearly on A'kua's face and in his posture, but this couldn't wait until after some klah. Or perhaps it could, but he wanted to rip the bandage off, so to speak. Besides, he had other things to take care of today as well. May as well get a quick start. Hopefully D'ale wouldn't mind seeing him so soon today. If he was even at his office yet. A'kua knocked on the door anyway.

"Come," D'ale called from the side table where he was pouring himself a cup of fresh hot klah. Yanley, bless her, always made sure someone brought a pot and some pastries each morning he came to work early.

The bronzerider came in and gave D'ale the appropriate salute. "Apologies for my intrusion, Wingsecond. I won't take much of your time, if you have it," he said quietly.

"Of course," D'ale waived in the direction of a chair. "Have a seat and tell me what's on your mind."

A'kua did so, picking at a thread on one of his gloves. "I could use some additional duties through month seven," he stated. "I'd like to keep busy for a while. Y'see…." His voice trailed off, and his jaw tightened. "Well, you'll be gettin' the transfer request later today. Ilyssia of green Gwynnyth -my weyrmate, also under your command-, wants to move to Windswept Islands Weyr. I.... I'm not goin' with her."

The finality and despair in his tone were heavy in the air.

**Additional duties** he repeated in his head while it tilted to the side. "I see," he said out loud. "I'm sure we can find something for you," He pulled a stack of hides toward him and began to sort through. "I have requests for transportation from Vintner Hall for several journeymen to be taken to their new assignments." He passed the list across his desk. A bronze might be overdoing it a little but if A'kua wanted distraction it was probably a fairly boring duty.

"I'll take 'em all." The younger man picked up the list to look it over. "Anythin' else available?" he asked with compete seriousness.

"First, perhaps, a small explanation?" D'ale's question was mild. He had plenty of additional work to hand out if needed but some of it was punishment detail that he held in reserve at most times.

A'kua had to give him a long look before he realized what his Wingsecond meant. "She- Lys found someone else. Windswept Island has a real forward-thinkin' dragonhealin' program she became part of through all her hard work, and she found someone there. So she's goin' there to just stop bein' so tired from travelin' all the time, and to be with him," he said bitterly. "So I want whatever work I can get as long as Zeiranth's not worn out."

"Alright," D'ale nodded. "Suppose you take the courier duty as long as you're lifemate isn't too tired out too badly to fly drills and Thread. But you make very sure you put _his_ health and well-being above yours. Understood?" He'd have Torerath keep tabs on the bronze to make certain. More than one pair had been lost due to grief and despair.

A'kua snorted. "I may be an uneducated hick, but I'm not that stupid," he muttered, then realized what he'd said and palmed himself in the face. "How many night watches is that, Sir?" he sighed in resignation.

"Uneducated hick or not, there is no reason for that kind of reaction other than a broken heart." D'ale stood and leaned on his desk. "For that reason alone, we'll act like it didn't happen." He pointed at the
younger rider. "But until you're my Wingleader or Weyrleader, don't talk to me like that again. I won't be so forgiving next time."

"Aye, Sir," the younger man said quietly, simultaneously wishing that example hadn't been used and knowing why it had been. "When does the transport duty begin?"

"That'll be tomorrow," D'ale said subsiding into his chair. "Do you need a place to stay tonight," he asked compassionately. "I'm sure Yanley can find something for you if you need it."

A'kua almost smiled. "She's my next stop after I get some breakfast. I know we're at full capacity, but I'll take what I can get."

He was fairly certain Yanley had something stashed for a time like this. She was competent in a way that was amazing to him. In fact that reminded him that he had something stashed himself to bring her this evening. He smiled at A'kua. "You go get some rest rider. You're going to need it."

Considering how worn he felt already, maybe a nap or something wouldn't be a bad idea. He might want to try getting one after he established his new weyr. It would at least pass the time. "Aye, Sir." The bronzerider rose from his seat. "Permission to depart?"

"Granted," D'ale looked back down at his hidework and was immediately sucked back into it.
