Description: L'keri meets his old friend K'mai
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 6, day 3 of Turn 9
Notes: Mentioned: D'ale, Ma'din, J'nev
When all of the formalities of reporting in to a new Weyr were
completed, L'keri breathed a sigh of relief and headed straight for the
Dining Cavern. He ought to go back to his new weyr and start unpacking,
he supposed, but he had little enthusiasm for its echoing emptiness
right now, and it couldn't be long until dinner. Perhaps some of his old
wingmates from his previous stay at Dragonsfall would be about - or even
riders from River Bluff. He'd heard some of them had ended up here.
The warmth of the inner caverns was certainly welcome. L'keri blew on
his chilled fingers to try and restore some feeling to them, and looked
around for familiar faces, wondering if it was too early to get a drink.
"L'keri, is that you?"
The brownrider turned, his eyes widening as he recognised the man
who'd spoken. "K'mai! What are you doing h..." He cut himself off,
remembering that it was only too obvious why a River Bluff rider would
be at Dragonsfall now. "Ah, I mean...it's good to see you again! How
are you and Sebeth?"
K'mai stepped closer to shake the other rider's hand. "We're well. How
about you and Rhalith?"
"Not bad! We only just arrived today - we were transferred. I was
wondering if I'd recognise anybody." L'keri smiled warmly. "It's been
too long. Why don't we go and get a drink, and catch up on old times?
You can tell me what it's like here at Dragonsfall. Apart from cold
enough to freeze a dragon's flame."
K'mai laughed. "That sounds great." They found a table in a quieter
part of the Dining Cavern and settled in. "So you're joining us in the
frozen wastes?"
"Yes! My old Weyr was getting a bit hot for me." In more ways than one,
L'keri thought. "I've been assigned to Cyan Wing. Just met the Wingsecond."
"I'm in Cyan too!" K'mai was glad for the lucky circumstance. He and
L'keri had be weyrbrats together but they'd gotten out of touch over
the Turns.
"Oh, that's good news! It'll be just like old times. Except hopefully
with more drinking, and less scrubbing out the weyrling barracks with a
toothbrush." The brownrider made a wry face. After his interview with
D'ale, he couldn't entirely rule out the scrubbing. "What do you think
of it, as a Wing?"
"Even short a Wingleader it seems solid. D'ale's doing a good job with
it." Then K'mai dropped his voice and made a face. "Steer clear of
Ma'din and J'nev, though. Cranky sorts, not much fun to be around."
"There's some like that in every Wing, I suppose. Good job there's
people like us to balance them out." A wicked gleam appeared in L'keri's
eye. "But what about the greenriders? I wonder if any of them remember
me..."
K'mai laughed. "I don't know if remembering would be good or bad for
your chances."
"I'm sure I left some thoroughly delightful memories of myself when I
left Dragonsfall," L'keri said in mock affront. "But if not, then I'll
just be a changed man. Older and wiser. Either way should work to my
advantage."
The bluerider shook his head. "And there's always new greenriders for
you to try your charms on."
"For which I'm grateful to the queens and their clutches." He raised his
glass in salute to the gold dragons. "You haven't told me what you've
been up to all this time though, K'mai. You've not found a mate and
settled down, have you?"
"Pfft, settled down! That's what holders do. I have lots of good
friends and skillful lovers, what could be better than that?" K'mai
took a sip. "I do have a daughter, though, with a good friend of
mine."
"Oh, congratulations!" L'keri smiled warmly and raised his glass again.
"How old is she?"
"About a turn and a half. I spend time with her when I can. She's
growing so fast, it feels like every time I blink she's bigger."
"That's a lovely age. It's when they start running all over the Weyr and
talking themselves into trouble that you have to watch out," L'keri said
with a wink.
"That's her fostermother's problem." K'mai laughed.
"If only it were that easy. You'll find out in a few Turns." The
brownrider grinned slyly, though he felt a slight twinge of guilt. He
had not exactly been the most attentive parent to his children, although
he had good intentions to do better now he was at Dragonsfall. "But I
didn't come to the dining cavern to scare old friends with tales of the
trials of fatherhood. I want to hear all the gossip I've missed out on
over the Turns!"
K'mai took a long sip and set down his drink. "That's a tall order.
Where should I start?" His eyes were bright with amusement. It was
good to see his old friend and it had been far too long since they'd
caught up.
"Why don't you start with the juiciest, sauciest story you can think of
and go on from there," L'keri suggested with a sly smile. He knew he
could trust his friend to have the best gossip, and if there was a
better way to get to know his new home, he couldn't think of it.
