Fence Dispute (1/2)

Writers: Eimi, Paula
Date Posted: 1st February 2019

Characters: Corowal, Jihan, Kibbins, Denber
Description: Corowal is assisted by Jihan when dealing with a border dispute.
Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 9, day 3 of Turn 9

Jihan stood arrow straight next to his portable writing desk that had
been set up on it's stand at the side of the road. He merely sighed
as elder Holder Denber and the young Holder Kibbins yelled at each
other from either side of a fence that separated their allotted
grazing land. Glancing down the road, he was relieved to see a runner
coming into view from between the trees.

"Holders," he said, finally raising his voice and a hand, "please save
your arguments now for the Lord Corowal. He approaches."

"About time," Denber grunted.

Corowal had two guards trailing him, on Zandan's insist . They did
their best to keep a respectable distance yet stay l close enough to
reach him if something did happen. Once they reached the spot, Corowal
dismounted and looked around.
Denber gestured to one of his lads, who hurried to take Corowal's mount's reins.
"Thank's lad, give him a water too, please," Corowal told the boy.

Kibbins leered at the older Holder flanked by his sons. The way he
fawned all over the Lord Holder just seemed to confirm he had
something to cover up. "Make sure it's _your_ water, boy, and not
mine."

"Lord Corowal," Jihan said with a polite bow. "I have been asked to
take notes and assist you today."

"Thank you, Jihan. Why don't you brief me in?" Corowal asked.

His bodyguards leaned against the fence and prepared to be bored.

"Sir, Holder Kibbins recently has returned to the Hold after the death
of his father to take over the working of his family's ancestral
allotted land," Jihan said, pointing a hand towards the younger man.
He then indicated the older gentlemen and his son. "This is Holder
Denber. His family was allotted this land and has also been working
it for generations. While Holder Kibbins' father was ill and his
field was not in use, Holder Denber took the opportunity to replace a
old fence line that marked the boundary between their allotments.
Holder Kibbins claims that this new fence was not built along the
original line but does in fact encroach on his family's property."

"He built that fence on my land, sir," Kibbins blurted out with a
finger pointed straight at the elder Holder. "He took advantage of my
sick father and he stole some of our land!"

"The old fence was so rickety that it let in your herdbeasts to eat
_our_ crops," Denber retorted. "The fence is built precisely where it
should be."

Corowal resisted the urge to roll his eyes. "So, what does the
original charter say?"

"It says that this is my land!" Kibbins said as he pulled out a rolled
hide. "I have the original right here. Stamped and signed by my
great-grandfather when he was given the land. It says that from the
eastern edge of the workshop due north to the creek belongs to my
family. Now I don't have a compass with me right now, sir, but you
can plainly see that that there fence is not in alignment at all with
the weaver's workshop over there!"

Jihan's furious scribbling stopped as he turned to look at the
building that stood across the road behind them. His eyes narrowed as
a thought was beginning to creep into his awareness.

"I have the original map of the lands, the fence is built in correct
place according to it." Denber replied and he gestured one of his sons
to pass rolled up hide to Corowal.
