Saibra

Saibra

Jadirah regretted that she hadn't been the Healer on shift for when
Saibra's children were born. She'd been called to do an amputation of
an infected leg on a Lower Caverns worker, something that should have
been handled before then but the woman had fought it so hard until
they had to take everything below the knee instead of just the foot,
and by the time she'd come out of that, it had been right to
Threadfall injuries and it was after it had all been done that she'd
heard the Weyrwoman's babies - babies! - were born.

She still felt some guilt for not being the one to deliver them, and
assuaged herself of it by dropping by just to check on her patient and
the new children.

"Jadirah," Saibra smiled as she waved the healer further into the
room. The Weyrwoman was propped on the couch, pillows on both side
supporting the crook of each slender arm that held a sleeping baby.
She still felt as if she were in that post-labor glow, where even
though the body is exhausted, the heart is full of wonder, love, and
happiness.

"Weyrwoman, you're positively radiant," Jadirah breathed out when she
saw the goldrider with her children. "Two little ones. How surprised
were you?"

"I am still surprised!" Saibra laughed softly but she was beaming, a
smile that reached into the depths of her eyes. "I obviously wanted,
very much, to have a child with R'enh, and now we have two. I feel as
though I am content to not have any more now." This was it for her and
she was going to savor every moment.

"And one of each! Had you been hoping for a boy or a girl, well, you
have both. Though I suppose it makes naming harder, are you going for
patterns?"

"I wanted a traditional blending of our names. I think we've decided
on Brenha for the girl," she gestured to the babe in her left arm,
"and Saihen for the boy."

"You picked a name that would elide well for him," Jadirah said.

"I thought so," Saibra admitted. Even though she would be proud of her
children no matter what, there was that part of her that hoped to see
all of her children ride dragons.

"You've both got such pretty names for combining, too. I remember Kad
and I agonizing for months over what we'd name ours," she said.

"It wasn't an easy process. I kind of liked Aibrehn for a boy but we
were afraid when they were little it would be easy to get them
confused, both having the "bren" sound." The Weyrwoman wiggled a bit
in her seat. "Would you like to hold one?"

"Oh, please," Jadirah said with an eagerness she couldn't suppress in
her tone. "Kaibren, Aibrehn, Brenha...yes, I could see the confusion."

"I love Saihen for a name, I think Saidrene will like it, too." Saibra
tried not to let disappointment bleed into her voice. Her firstborn
had yet to come from Dolphin Cove to visit.

"Does she know yet?" Jadirah asked, remembering that dragons could
spread gossip quickly.

"She knows," Saibra confirmed. "Kaibren came up earlier to see his new
brother and sister and then K'yne took him out for some Uncle-Nephew
time." Which she had been grateful for. Kaibren had been "the baby"
for several Turns now.

"Oh, that's sweet of him to have done," Jadirah said.

It had been sweet, Saibra thought, even though she'd seen that look in
K'yne's eyes. The look that said he wished the twins she was holding
in her arms were his. She dearly hoped he had the opportunity to be a
father some day, not like the situation with J'ackt, but to truly be
able to hold an infant in his arms and know that he was a papa.

"How is A'kades doing at Dolphin Cove?" she asked.

"He's doing well. Happy with the new challenges, though." She
hesitated for a moment, wondering if it was revealing too much of his
personal business, before going ahead anyway. "I still think he
grieves Lenala so much. I was hoping he'd maybe start finding
someone."

"It took me a long time after my first weyrmate died to even consider
another man." Especially after what had happened between her and K'yne.

She nodded solemnly. "I just wish I could fix it for him."

"Time will," Saibra said, watching Jadirah hold Brenha, "are you sure
you're done having children?" The Weyrwoman grinned.

"My own? Probably. But..." She looked down at the little girl, face soft
and tender. "I do like delivering them and checking up the little ones.
It's enough."

"Thank you for coming by Jadirah. Once I'm able, I want to start working
out and exercising some of this baby weight off. I'll be expecting your
company for that," she grinned.

"Exercise like early candlemark runs around the weyr?" she joked.

"I hate running," Saibra groaned. "Maybe more like hiking and swimming
in the Winter Lake?"

"That sounds a lot better. Less bad on the joints, trust me, I'm a
Healer," she grinned.

Saibra smiled, "Good, then it's a date, we'll start in two months?"

"Your wish is my command, Weyrwoman," she said. "I think it'll be nice
to have some girl workout time." Slowly she handed back the child, a bit of regret pulling at her.

"Me too, Jadirah."
