"Zathris," Rethisa smiled as she greeted her brother, who was waiting
for her in the courtyard amidst the snow.
"Have a nice flight?" he asked as he put a hand to her elbow and
helped her to walk through the snow that was quickly gathering.
"It was great. I'd never imagined the frigid snow feeling warm, but it
actually did after we came out of /between/." Rethisa said with a bit
of a laugh as they mounted the stairs.
Zathris was studying her profile as they walked, taking in the color
in her cheeks and the sparkle in her blue eyes. "You seem very happy,
Rethisa. I take that to mean that things are going well with Demir
still?"
Rethisa raised her eyebrows at Zathris's question and squeezed her
brother's arm, "I am very happy. He's a good man, Zathris."
"Well, no one will ever be good enough for my sister, that's just how
it works." The Lord Holder winked as they entered the warmth of the
Hold and made their way to the Holder's family quarters. "Benani's
been preparing for your arrival," he said as he pushed the door open
to their parlor.
"Rethisa," Benani rose with a smile. "Did you have lunch? I have some
hot tea and klah if you'd like a cup."
"Benani, it's so good to see you," Rethisa hugged her sister in law.
"I did have some stew before leaving home, but a cup of hot tea would
be wonderful. It's frigid out there today."
"It sure is," Benani smiled, offered a seat with a wave of her hand
and sat back down to pour a cup of tea and offer it to Rethisa. "How
is Mirresa?"
"Growing like a weed. The nine months carrying her seemed so long but
now time seems to be passing so quickly." Rethisa sat down in the
chair beside of Benani, happy to have familiar female company again.
Demir's family was nice, but she missed her own at times.
Zathris sat down as well, "Just wait, it slows way down when they turn
three. You'll think that Turn is never going to end."
Benani chuckled knowing exactly how much her husband loved his
children. "Oh yes, he makes it seem so awful like we had to care for
them without any help at all."
"Maybe it's because we have two who are three at the same time. And
both boys." Zathris groaned a little and shook his head.
Rethisa laughed, "I'm sure you're just getting paid back for how wild
you were as a child."
Zathris's green eyes widened, "Me? Wild? I feel certain they are
getting their wildness from their mother." He winked at Benani.
Benani rolled her eyes remembering how they met and her wild ride that
day. "Am I _never_ going to live that down?" But right then the two
little hellions came careening into the room and threw themselves at
their da.
"We want fruit pies," said one, "but cook says no," said the other.
"Well the cook is right of course," Zathris said as he slung a child
over each shoulder and stood. "You can't eat sweets before you have
dinner! And I heard that they're looking for a sack of tubers in the
kitchens for tonight's meal. And what do you know," Zathirs turned
from side to side, the boys dangling down his back, "I happen to have
two sacks of tubers right here!"
Rethisa smiled as her nephews squealed with laughter. It was so good
to see Zathris and his little family laughing and smiling.
"See what you and Demir have to look forward to?" Benani smiled and
sipped her tea. "Any sign of another coming along," she asked softly
while her husband played with his boys.
"Not yet," Rethisa admitted, a wistful look stealing into her eyes,
"but it's certainly not for lack of trying." She smiled into her cup,
just thinking about Demir brought a touch of color to her cheeks.
"Oh good," Benani smiled and looked at Zathris with love. It had taken
her time to recover from her trauma but he'd been patient and loving
in a way she'd never expected. The result had been healing for her
spirit and she'd found the ability to open herself up to him again.
"It's always good when you are married to a man that makes it a joy to
try. I'm sure you'll succeed."
"I hope so," Rethisa felt as if she owed her entire life to Demir. She
certainly owed him a child of his own, by blood, since he'd so
willingly taken in Mirresa as his own, even allowing his name to be
part of hers.
"I hope so too," Benani reached out to squeeze Rethis's hand. She
could empathize with her sister-in-law's trials. She wasn't privy to
all the details but she knew she'd gone through some rough times with
her former husband. "You deserve to be happy."
