K'yne

K'yne

}:Seryth's rider says that she would like to speak with you.:{
Arinoth's tone was laced with sleepiness, as the brown was draped over
his weyrledge, tail hanging loosely off the edge like a great feline.

K'yne was sitting with his shirt open, sleeves rolled up, elbow deep
in oil, working on his riding straps. Seryth's rider... His brow
furrowed. Who was that again? He nearly couldn't remember until a
flash of auburn hair and bright eyes crossed his memory. The
incredibly shy greenrider, the flight he and Arinoth had won! Being as
busy as he was in Cobalt Wing, he'd thought little more about the girl
after they had parted ways.

**Um, sure, send her over.** He told Arinoth.

"Come in," he called, not getting up from his chair as he slid one of
the pieces of leather through his slippery hands, looking for cracks
or tears.

She walked in and resisted the urge to peer around his weyr.
Spotting K'yne handling leather, she cleared her throat. "Sorry to
just drop in on you, sir. I hope Arinoth and you are well."

"I thought we talked about you calling me 'sir'," he said without
glancing up.

"Is Wingsecond better? I thought you said -" she stopped, thinking
maybe he wanted to be a regular rider since she wasn't his wing
rider. "Right."

"Nevermind," he chuckled, finally looking up for his work. "Have a
seat. What brings you by?" He remembered her being rather shy after
Seryth's flight so he didn't think she was here on a romantic whim.

Erivana sat down and kept fuddling with her shirt. She paused for a
long moment then just blurted it out.

"Uhm. Well you see I was really nauseated, and nearly threw up in my
drills a couple days ago and then the Weyrwoman scolded at me and sent
me to the Healers and uhm. And then the Healers told me I was pregnant

and I told the Weyrwoman and she sent me to speak to you. Because she
said I needed to talk to you
before I did anything because it's both of our choice what I do."

She gasped a little for breath when she was done just pouring it forth.

The riding straps slipped from K'yne's hands, his eyes never left
Erivana's face, "I'm sorry. Can you say that again. A little slower
this time?"

"I - which part?"

}:The hatchlings part,:{ Seryth supplied.

"I'm pregnant and the Weyrwoman told me to talk to you."

K'yne stared at her, still not comprehending, "Why me?"

"Because it's yours. From the flight." Her brown eyes were clear as
she looked at him.

**..it's yours...** those two words echoed in K'yne's brain. For Turns
he'd wished to have children of his own, and if he had fathered some
by flights before none of those women had ever told him. He had always
imagined, however, that his children would come from a woman that he
was in love with, like Saibra or Ocktima, and now here was a young
girl he barely knew....

"Oh," he said, and then kicked himself for not having a better first
response. "So you are planning on keeping it then?"

All he said was 'oh'? That was some kind of response. It's not like
Erivana could blame him for having that as a response. It was kind of
how she had felt about the news. **Oh, here's what's happening.**
She'd been stunned. Myabe he was just stunned.

"I don't know," she said. "I just found out yesterday and the
Weyrwoman said I should talk to you about it before I made a decision
and I haven't really had time to think. I mean. It's a lot."

"It is a lot," he agreed. It was also everything he had ever wanted,
but the sane side of him was reluctant to say that to Erivana. What if
she thought he was pressuring her to have the baby? Even though that
was desperately what he wanted. A son, his own son! One that he could
actually be involved with.... "It is ultimately your decision, but I
am not opposed to a baby. If that is what you choose I would be happy
to be apart of the pregnancy."

He wasn't opposed to it...was that excitement, or just being willing
to help support her, if it happened? Well, happy to be a part of it
was better than totally abandoning her to it on her own, she thought.
Maybe he just didn't know how to feel, either.

"They said there's a few sevendays I had to think about it, so
whether I keep it or not, I mean, I'm not deciding tomorrow. We can
talk about it more if you want, I should talk to my family." Something
she kept saying but had no intentions of doing.

"Do you have a weyrmate, or other children? I don't know..." she
trailed off, realizing if he had a weyrmate she might have seen signs
of it, unless they weren't a rider and thus just stayed in another
room if there was one. She decided to rephrase. "Anyone else who the
decision would matter to?"

K'yne thought of J'ackt, Saibra, Saidrene and Kaibren. "No, I have no
one else to discuss the matter with, and no weyrmate." It did not
matter to anyone living what he did with his life. It was a stark
realization for the brownrider.

Erivana had her mother, or her friends like Lanniya and Tarley. But
she didn't have a romantic partner or siblings for this to matter to.
It made her feel a sympathetic pang.

"Then I suppose really in the end it just comes down to us."

His blue eyes came back to hers. Was she really considering keeping
the baby then? K'yne didn't know Erivana well enough to be able to
read her true feelings on the matter. "I suppose it does."

"I know you said you'd be okay with a child, but, are you mad at me
for this?" she asked, still twisting her fingers in the laces. "For
slipping up, I mean. And when we don't really know each other at all,
outside of a single flight."

The corners of K'yne's mouth tipped upward, softening the hard
features of his angular face, "No, I am not mad. Life happens. I have
never had the chance to be a father before."

"That's better than you telling me I should have been smarter," she
said, summoning up a small smile.

"Maybe after you have had a few days to think about it we can talk
again?" he offered.

"Yes. Please. If you don't mind. If we're going to be in this together
it should be a together decision."

"Agreed. When you are ready just have Seryth speak with Arinoth
again." K'yne rose to his feet, wiping oiling arms with a towel. "Is
it alright if I hug you?" That was a question he hadn't asked a woman
in many, many Turns.

Erivana stood up herself, a little puzzled - she'd expected a sharper
dismissal, not this. "Yes, it would be fine."

The brownrider wrapped his arms around Erivana, noting their height
difference and how she tucked very neatly into his side, "No matter
what you decide, I'm here if you need something." It was the least he
could offer.

"I appreciate that," she half-whispered into his side.
