"Why haven't we done this before?" Saibra wondered as she draped her
arm over her eyes, reveling in the feel of the warm sun on her skin.
While Chioneth had been egg heavy and then stuck on the Sands with her
clutch, Saibra had been all but trapped inside the cold confines of
Dragonsfall.
Lanniya slathered cream on her pale skin, then laid back, hoping that
this one time, she might develop more than just freckles. "I don't
know. I miss the sun and I get so tired of the cold. "
"Me too," Saibra admitted. "I grew up at Far Island Weyr. I miss being
able to wear the cute, revealing little sundresses and sandals all the
time."
"Me too." Lanniya sighed wistfully. "I miss Dolphins Cove. I could
wear swimsuits and swim, wear my dresses... Some times I don't feel
like a girl at all when its so cold. "
It felt good to be away from the cares of the Weyr for a bit, but
something had been eating at Saibra ever since the Hatching. "Lanniya,
I should have said it sooner, but I wanted to apologize for not
checking on your more immediately after the Hatching. I know it must
have been hard on you."
"It was," she admitted. "But I handled what I had to, even though I
didn't know if I could. Thank you. K'ale helped me through it all and
the weyrlings and the hatchlings kept calm. I know you were upset,
just from listening to Chioneth."
"I wish it had been a different experience, for everyone, and for
Loella. To be invited to the Weyr to see how comfortable she could be
with dragons, only to watch that...." Saibra trailed off with a little
sigh as she rolled over and laid face down so that she could get some
sun on her bare back and legs.
"It was traumatic for her. I don't know that her husband left with a
good impression of the Weyr either. He was furious with us." Lanniya
sighed softly, closing her eyes. " I'm going to try to go visit her,
but if her husband objects, I might not be able to teach her much."
Saibra pictured the woman's husband again in her mind, remembering how
stiff and formal he had been, clearly uneasy. "Perhaps it is for the
best. It is unlikely she would need to hear all dragons at the Hold."
She would perhaps have the watchdragon to talk to, Saibra reasoned,
and might be able to hear glimpses of dragons when Thread fell near
the Hold. As it was, the Dragonsfall territory seemed to have more
people with the gift than Saibra had ever met, between Lanniya,
Loella, and that drudge that Uetia had brought in, Lafael.
"We still fly thread over her and that's hard to listen to, Saibra.
It's horrible, especially if you don't know how to block at least some
of it out. She'll need help and she doesn't have any control. I had
to learn on my own just to not go crazy." She then also rolled over,
deciding to change the subject. "Saibra, is it just me, or do the
bronzeriders here all serious?"
"Are they? Let's see there's... G'nir," Saibra ticked off one finger,
"he's definitely serious. Pretty arrogant, too. Then there's K'reyel,
of course, and he's not _overly_ serious, I suppose, but he is very
calm and even-keeled. R'enh's not too serious, but usually busy with
the Wing. There's D'kere, he's very laid back, probably the least
serious of the bunch, sometimes I forget he is a bronzerider."
"You know, not a one has paid any attention me at all, except for
R'enh, and that's because he knows me from Dolphins Cove. You'd think
that they didn't know that Anaeryth is going to eventually rise. If I
throw my flight open, none of them might catch her."
Saibra chuckled. "The bronzeriders at Dolphin Cove are all pretty
serious too. What about K'ale, does his Imalkyth have a shot?"
"I met plenty there that were friendly. " She sniffed. " I hope he
does, but I don't know. My instinct says no, but I sent him to try.
Anaeryth didn't even look at the browns the first time she rose. She
wanted older bronzes. I think that's why Y'gel and Aughashyth won. "
She peered over at Saibra. " I think I'm going to throw it open
though."
"You should, if that's what you want to do," Saibra agreed. "You might
even get a couple of participants from Far Island. New bloodlines in
the Weyr is always a good thing."
"I doubt it'll make me more popular here, but if they're not willing
to put in an effort..." Lanniya frowned, "then I'm going to give
Anaeryth more options. I didn't know if you'd have to approve that or
not."
"Sometimes bronzeriders are just busy," Saibra said. There wasn't
typically a lot of fanfare over her either, not even when Chioneth was
broody, not even when a bronzerider could have the opportunity to be
Weyrleader! It had been a difficult thing for her to understand when
she'd arrived at Dragonsfall, but she had grown accustomed to it being
that way. "K'reyel and I both like to know if a flight is going to be
open. It shouldn't be a problem this time."
"Well, we've got a while yet." Lanniya admitted, but she did have her
sights and hopes set one one particular bronzerider. She felt her
bottom getting warm and flipped over again. " You're so lucky. I don't
think I'm ever going to get even a little tan."
Saibra laughed a little, "I'll probably be burned. It's been so long
since I've sunned, but right now, I don't even care."
" I just get freckles. Or burn and then I go right back to being white
as snow." Lanniya huffed. "At least I'll blend in during the winter. "
"Hey, but you've got that vibrant red hair. Men like that." Saibra said.
Lanniya lifted her head to peer at Saibra. " What makes you think
that?" She held up two fingers. "Two. That's it, besides Flights. Just
two that have been interested. I've got K'ale and I love him to
pieces, but just him and just one other. Everyone else acts or
pretends like I'm their little sister. You're lucky. You're all curvy
and bouncy, and dark. They like _that_."
The Weyrwoman laughed, rolling over so that she could raise up on her
elbows to look at Lanniya. "I don't know _what_ the bronzeriders of
Dragonsfall like, because let me assure you, exactly zero of them have
paid me any attention, even when R'enh was living at Dolphin Cove and
we weren't exclusive- nothing. I thought I might get a little more
attention since bronzeriders might want to be Weyrleader, but they
don't even want that at Dragonsfall, apparently."
"What's wrong with them?" She lowered her voice. " Do you think the
cold shrivels up their..." She waved a hand to indicate what she was
talking about. "It can't be ALL of them. K'ale certainly doesn't have
that problem." She gave a little satisfied smirk. He hadn't had that
problem at all the night before. Honestly, she should have been
walking funny this morning.
"No, R'enh doesn't have that problem either," the goldrider said with
a toothy grin. "Although I am inclined to believe your theory." The
bronzeriders of Dragonsfall seemed to either be young and uninterested
in leadership, or old and grumpy.
"R'enh's not from here. Maybe his blood is still hot from Dolphins
Cove." Lanniya giggled. "Too bad browns aren't bigger and give queen
eggs. Then I wouldn't worry about cold, shriveled bronzeriders. I'd
invite _all_ the brownriders." She gave a grin.
"I actually had a couple of good experiences with browns winning
Chioneth when we lived at Far Island." She thought of her first
weyrmate, K'fel, whose brown had flown Chioneth once. "You can still
have a strong clutch, minus the gold egg," she raised her shoulders.
It wasn't as if Dragonsfall had the need for another gold at the
moment anyway. "And you never know, a brown might surprise you and fly
Anaeryth anyway, if he's wily enough to out fly the bronzes."
She wondered if Imalkyth was wily enough; he knew Anaeryth quite well,
but would her gold be amenable? She simply didn't know. "Maybe so. I
know Imalkyth has flown Onnyth before, but he says it wasn't a good
clutch and he got in trouble." She pursed her lips. "I think he's
going to try though." She paused, then flicked her eyes towards
Saibra. "Can I ask your advice on something?"
"Ask away," Saibra said as she reached over and plopped her sun hat on
her head to give her face some shade.
She felt far too embarrassed to ask Pierka, and she couldn't ask her
mother, during her rare visits, but perhaps Saibra would have some
answers. "You have a bit more experience than me, so...if I really
wanted to make a man... ahem... happy...what would you suggest?"
Lanniya was right about the experience, which was probably why Saibra
wasn't the least bit shy. "Do you mean during sex, or to get things
started?"
Lanniya's answering smile was almost devilish. "He has no problems
getting things started. None. At. All. I think he's always ready."
Saibra grinned, learning more about K'ale today than she had in the
Turns she had been at Dragonsfall. "Well, I mean, what are the typical
things that you do for him during?"
Cheeks suddenly flaming, Lanniya squirmed. "Uhm...Honestly, he's kinda
in control there. I mean, he's shown me different positions and all.
He knows more than I do. I...go along with it? It's always good,
though. " She frowned, suddenly concerned. "Surely he wouldn't want to
all the time if I was bad at it, would he?"
The Weyrwoman didn't answer that question. She'd met men that would sleep with just about anything, but that wasn't exactly what she wanted to say to Lanniya. She found it interesting that the extroverted goldrider was blushing about sex.
"I am sure K'ale is enjoying himself very much. If you would like to surprise him and be a bit more in charge, all you have to do is take your mouth and...." Saibra went into detail, and by the time they were finished talking, she was sure that K'ale would be getting a very nice surprise.
