Deciding to act on the advice of others and her own desire to do
_something_ besides worry about Luneth, Ninaine took a slow breath and
lightly rapped on the door of G'nir's office. He had always
intimidated her, especially as Weyrleader, but she hoped that he would
listen and allow her to assist.
"Please, come in," G'nir called. His desk was well organized and clean. He had just finished doing the next sevenday's drill-plan and was now reading E'naer's report on candidates.
Quietly stepping in, Ninaine, offered a nervous smile. "Hello, G'nir. May I speak to you a moment?"
"Of course, Ninaine. How have you been?" G'nir replied with polite nod and rose to hold a chair for her.
"Thank you. " She sat, appreciative of the courtesy. "I've been as well as can be expected all things considered. Since Luneth is injured, I thought that perhaps I could help with the weyrlings. Especially the ones from holds."
G'nir returned to his seat after she had sat down. He had been raised to be a gentleman.
"I have pretty good experiences of recovering riders helping with weyrlings," G'nir replied, thinking of Talwynn.
"Well, the dragon healers don't think that Luneth will ever fly Thread again." Ninaine spoke softly. "And I want to help in some way. I know I wasn't a good weyrling, but maybe I can help someone else not make the same mistakes that Luneth and I did. "
G'nir nodded, he could understand her reasons. "How about your health? If I understood correctly, you were injured too?" he asked.
"I wasn't hurt badly. " She fingered the light scar at her temple. " Just a bump on the head. Physically I'm fine for duty."
"Alright," G'nir said. For a moment he debated with himself if he should ask healers to clear her or not. But she didn't sport any outward injuries and months had passed since the Scoring.
"I'm happy to accept your help with the weyrlings," he said.
She breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you. What would you like me to do? When shall I start?"
"Whenever you feel ready," G'nir replied the last question first. "I'll have E'naer or D'kere to asses your skills to see where to you fit best. Right now, we are preparing for next Hatching. After that, the newly Impressed will need general help and advices. There's also candidate classes."
Skills...shards... what skills? But she nodded; she remembered the candidate classes well and she could definitely help with those. "I thought I could also help with some of the holdbred candidates or weyrlings, if I needed to."
"How comfortable you would be to talk the holdbred girls about sex?" G'nir asked. "I usually have E'naer to do it, but he's male or I ask someone with healer background, like Tavia, to do those classes."
There weren't currently any females among weyrlingstaff assistants. It was an odd situation to be.
Ninaine swallowed. "It'll be a bit uncomfortable, " she admitted, "but I can do it." Thinking of her own fears when a Candidate, and then as a weyrling, she continued. "It's important for them, especially if they come from Holds."
"Considering your background, you may actually reach them better than us," G'nir said thoughtfully. "You can relate to them, most of them will be as uncomfortable with the subject as you are."
She nodded in agreement. "I think the girls will be especially. I don't think boys are quite as restricted in a Hold, unless they're destined for greens. Then...well, I might need some help there. I don't know mitch about men with men."
"E'naer is very good with that aspect," G'nir replied. "He can help you in that regard."
She nodded, remembering E'naer's lectures very clearly. "Good, if I have his help, then I can do it."
"Then, welcome to Cerulean wing," G'nir smiled. Oh, they still needed to formalize it with her current wingleader, but that wasn't going to be a problem.
Tensions in her shoulders eased and she finally offered a smile as she rose and offered her hand. "Thank you for the chance, G'nir."
"You're welcome," G'nir rose to shake her hand.
