G'nir

G'nir

G'nir sighed sadly and pinched the bridge of his nose. Having a
hatchling die was always hard, no matter who's Clutch it was There had
been enough candidates left on the sands, but just not the _right
one_. If someone had been looking at him, for a moment, they would had
seen the real him behind the arrogant bronzerider. G'nir took few deep
breaths and put back on his mask. Life didn't stop for tragedy and he
had job to do, the living dragonets and their riders to take care.

Besides, his nephew had Impressed, finally. The colour of his dragon
had not been a surprise.
He walk out of the Hatching Cavern to join the weyrlings, still
feeding their dragonets.

"Anndil! Congratulations!"

"Uncle," the green weyrling turned with a bright smile, "it is A'nir
now." He felt a bit shy telling his new name since G'nir was bound to
understand the significance.

"A'nir? Are you sure, not A'dil?" G'nir douple checked.

"No," the greenrider shook his head vehemently, "I am positive that it
is A'nir." He never wanted to be associated with his father's name
again.

"In that case, I'm honoured by your choice of a name," G'nir gave a
formal half bow. Then his expression turned into something less
formal, the one of curious relative. "Now, introduce me to this pretty
girl. I didn't catch her name in that chaos."

A'nir was all smiles when it came to his new lifemate. "This is
Iebrath," he said introducing G'nir to the dragonet.

The dainty green turned her sleek snout toward the new man and gazed
at him quizzically.

"This is my uncle," A'nir said out loud to Iebrath, forgetting that he
could have just talked to her mentally.

"My duty to you, Iebrath," G'nir greeted the dragonet, knowing better
than try to scratch hatchling in feeding frenzy.

Nirreth also came to inspect her.

}: Welcome, little one. You're a pretty one, : { the bronze greeted.

**And you're so not going to chase her. **

}:Thank you,:{ Iebrath said to the bronze, who seemed like a giant
compared to her dainty little body.

A'nir handed her another piece of fresh meat, which she gobbled up
hungrily. "I don't suppose my mother came, did she?" he asked, even
though he hadn't really expected her. It would have been a wonderful
surprise.

"No, she didn't come," G'nir said with rueful tone. "If you want to
write her, deliver the letter to my office and I made sure she gets
it."

"Oh," A'nir couldn't hide the disappointment in his voice. He'd known
she wouldn't but it still hurt nonetheless, to be your parent's
biggest embarrassment. "I'll write her a letter then," he said. He
wondered if his mother would even tell his father about it. Maybe if
he'd somehow impressed a brown or a bronze, but knowing that their son
rode a green for all of Pern to see would be the ultimate shame to his
father's name.

"Yes," G'nir sighed. At least his parents had forgiven G'nir after he
Impressed Nirreth. "At least you didn't have to climb out of window to
run off with the Searchrider."

"No, but my dragonrider uncle did have to come and bust me out or I
would have been locked in that room forever." A'nir pointed out, still
grateful that G'nir had come to his rescue.

"It was the right thing to do," G'nir said and reached to squeeze his shoulder.
A'nir smiled, uncharacteristically shy. Iebrath bumped her snout into
the back of his legs. }:I am getting sleepy.:{ the green complained.

"Oh," he turned around, cradling her head in his arms as her eyelids
began to droop. "I'd better get her to her bed then," he told G'nir.

"You do that," G'nir smiled approvingly. "I still need to check the
other weyrlings and the candidates, but I'll see you once you've
settled to the weyrling barracks."

A'nir nodded his head. "Thank you again, Uncle." The new greenrider
turned and looped his arm around Iberath's neck and led her to her new
home.
