Takes place after "Playing in the Clouds" and before "I Will
Follow You into the Dark"
Paetri open her eyes, feeling both pleasantly sated and sore. She
stretched slowly and then turned her head, curious about who had won
Camilth's flight. "Oh. Hello, L'keri." She flushed, just a little,
remembering their last encounter and what she had distracted him with.
The brownrider was lying on his side, head pillowed on his elbow, a
contented smile on his face as he relived the memories of the flight. It
widened as he realised she was looking at him. "Hello, Paetri." He
shifted, raising his head on his hand. "That was a lovely way to start
the day."
She gave a short, but genuine laugh. Normally, she left shortly after a
flight ended, but she liked her wingmate and didn't feel uncomfortable.
"I'm glad you enjoyed it. I did too."
L'keri relaxed. It was always a relief to know a flight had been fun for
the greenrider, too. Mostly it was, but sometimes the younger ones could
find it hard to deal with, if they'd been holdbred or would have
preferred someone else. "So, am I forgiven for calling you proper at the
lake? Because I can now attest to the fact that you are definitely not.
In the best possible way."
Her brows rose and there was still humor in her eyes as her lips
quivered. She actually had been considered very proper after she'd
Impressed, and it had taken time and effort to relax enough to do
exactly what she was doing now. "Well, you and Rhalith did work hard to
get your eyeful, didn't you? I suppose I can find it in my heart to
forgive you."
"Thanks. It's very good of you to forgive such a grievous error," he
said solemnly, shifting to place a hand over his heart. "And the eyeful
was worth every bit of the work and more. Though Rhalith did most of it.
I owe that dragon a lot."
Paetei tried to bite back her laugh, she truly did, but it bubbled up
out of her at his solemn declaration. "Just the eyeful, huh? I'm not
that much of an eyeful." What she had could only be considered modest at
best, but the compliment warmed her. "You're a mess, you know that?" She
half sat up, leaning back on her elbows in a recline. "A funny mess."
She shook her head and leaned to brush her lips lightly over his.
"You're completely forgiven."
The brownrider blinked, surprised, and then a slow, genuine smile lit
his face. "If this is what happens when I'm forgiven, it's not
surprising that I get myself into mischief from time to time. And
believe me, I know an eyeful when I see one." He knew she had a
weyrmate, though, and he didn't want to ruin this moment by pushing. He
offered a hand. "Friends?"
She looked at his hand and then gave a bit of a giggle before taking it.
"This is the first flight that someone's wanted to shake my hand while
I'm naked. I'm not sure whether or not to be offended." She shook her
head. A turn ago, she probably would've taken it poorly. "Friends.
You, mess." She sat up, spinning her legs to fall over the side. "Where
did my trousers go?"
L'keri sat up and tried to smooth down his tousled hair. "I'm not sure.
I remember helping you to wriggle out of them..." He tried to put that
tantalising image out of his mind, without much success. Trying to
distract himself, he leaned over the edge of the bed to look underneath,
in case he'd kicked any clothes that way.
"You won't tell all our wingmates that this ended with a handshake, will
you?" he asked, his voice slightly muffled by his upside-down position.
"I'll completely lose my reputation as a rogue and seducer."
She looked over her shoulder at him then snorted out a laugh at his
position. His bottom was almost up in the air; not a really pleasant
view from her angle, but it was rather funny. "I don't remember as
much wriggling as yanking." She slipped off of the bed and knelt,
peering under the bed to meet his eyes. She found a strip of cloth and
plucked it out. It was definitely her underwear. She stared at it,
then slowly held it up. They were torn at the sides and they were
almost brand new. She poked her head back down. "You owe me new
panties, L'keri. You get me some nice ones and I won't say a word."
L'keri could remember that part, too, and in the throes of draconic
passion it had felt wonderful, but he could see now that it might be
more than a little annoying for their owner. He sat upright with an
apologetic expression. "I suppose if there's one thing better than being
known as a rogue and seducer, it's a rogue and seducer who knows where
to get good underwear." He grinned. "Done."
"Then it's a deal." Paetri nodded, then eyed her trousers before
plucking them out from under the bed. It always felt funny to wear
them without the undergarments. Rising, she wiggled into them,
shifting a bit to get the seams just right before lacing them. "Just a
reputation then? Cause, I haven't seen any seducing." She smiled
wryly, then glanced around for her shirt. She found it across the
room, laying on another pair of trousers. She picked up her shirt,
tossed him his clothes and slid her own over her bare chest. "Pink or
green is nice."
The brownrider groaned. "Now you're just making me imagine you in them.
And...well." He shook out his shirt, which had got turned inside out
somehow. "I haven't always made the best decisions, but I do try not to
seduce other people's weyrmates." Pushing back unwelcome memories, he
lightened his tone. "A little flirting, however..."
"Good. You should imagine it, so you'll know just how they're supposed
to fit." She tossed the ruined pair to him as she tucked in the shirt.
"Flights are different, you know. But I've only stayed past the Flight
once when J'kri hasn't won, so it's alright. Thank you for that and
for not pushing." Her smile was warm. "I don't mind flirting a bit,
though." She walked by him and kissed his cheek again. "Flirt all you
like."
"In that case..." He stood up and stretched lazily, in an unashamed act
of showing off. "I'll get you a very nice pair of panties, and when you
see me looking at you in wing meetings with a big grin on my face,
you'll know exactly what I'm thinking about."
The thought brought a bright blush to her cheeks, but she gave him a
giggle, enjoying the banter. "Well, maybe if you work hard, then you'll
get to see me in them. Thanks for a great Flight, L'keri." She began
walking out of the door, then paused to look over her shoulder, her lips
curled up in a definite sly grin. " You know, J'kri and I, we have an
understanding. You could have had seconds, if you wanted them." She gave
a little tsk of her tongue. "Maybe next time." At that, she winked and
walked out, putting a purposeful sway to her slim hips.
L'keri watched her leave with his mouth open in astonishment, one hand
raised to his cheek where she'd kissed him. Why, in the name of the
First Egg, hadn't he asked? He didn't know whether to laugh, curse or
kick himself for being an idiot.
"So. Not. Proper!" he called after her, and wasn't sure whether he heard
a giggle in the distance, or if he'd just imagined it.
On the whole, he decided, it was best to laugh. It had been a very good
flight. And there were always those tantalising parting words. Next time...
