Description: K'yne calls Benna to task for her distraction during Drill.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 10, day 24 of Turn 9
Notes: Mentioned: L'keri, Paetri and J'kri
Benna knocked on her wingsecond's door and waited. Henerath had passed
along Arinoth's message that he wanted to see her and she was pretty
sure she knew why. Today's drill had not exactly gone well.
"Come in," K'yne called, sitting back in his chair as Benna entered
the office. "Have a seat," he gestured to the empty chair across from
his desk.
Benna fought off the urge to slouch when she sat. Knowing she deserved
the dressing down she was about to get did nothing to make the idea of
it more pleasant. She had never been so distracted during a drill and
her face burned just thinking about it. They'd been off the mark
almost every step of the way today, and it wasn't Henerath's fault,
but her own.
K'yne could tell by the greenrider's posture that she understood the
nature of their meeting. "You want to tell me what was going on out
there today?"
She resisted the urge to say, 'I'm sorry,' knowing that it wouldn't do
any good. At least not yet, still, she couldn't help but cringe. "I
wasn't paying enough attention and missed my toss. A few times." Even
as she said it, she felt embarrassed and frustrated with herself. She
hadn't missed so many tosses when she was a weyrling for Faranth's
sake.
At least she wasn't oblivious to the problems she'd had, K'yne
thought. Sometimes riders came in and were clueless about their poor
performance. "Care to tell me what's going on? These mistakes aren't
like you."
"I know, and I'm sorry," Benna sighed, pushing the irritation she felt
rising within her - both with herself and with the source of her
distraction - aside as best she could. "I was thinking about something
else. I shouldn't have been, I know."
She probably would have done even worse if Henerath hadn't been paying
attention. She hoped that the wingsecond wouldn't pry. He could, she
knew, it was his job to. But, the last thing she wanted was to have it
known that she was too busy thinking about the problems she was having in her relationship with L'keri to manage her drills properly.
If she were a habitual problem within the wing, K'yne would have
pressed her for more information, but since Benna had not had any
disciplinary actions before, K'yne let it go. "You could have caused
injury to yourself or to a wingmate, and if you're distracted like
that in Threadfall, then the consequences could be someone's life." He
thought of Paetri and J'kri. "I need to see a marked improvement from
you at tomorrow's drills or you'll be grounded next 'fall."
She nodded, feeling ashamed all over again, "It won't happen again,
Sir." She was not usually so formal with any of her wingmates, even
the leaders. But this situation warranted formality. Demanded it,
even.
K'yne nodded. "You're dismissed."
Benna breathed a sigh of relief that was not quite audible and
replied, "Yes, Sir." She stood and quickly left the office, glad she
hadn't had to explain the details. Following quickly on the tail of
the relief however was a surge of annoyance. She'd been thinking about
the lunch with L'keri which had been so awkward compared to the usual
easy, fun events their get-togethers were. By the end of it he'd acted
like he couldn't get away fast enough.
Then she shoved the annoyance away. She was not being fair. It wasn't
-his- fault she hadn't been doing her job during practice, even if
he'd been the subject matter she had been distracted over. She sighed
and headed back to her weyr. She was tired and needed to get cleaned
up. She considered going to L'keri's weyr and using his bath,
something she had done plenty of times with no questions asked, but
thought better of it today.
