A cold pair of blue eyes watched the rather public argument between
L'keri and Benna with interest. **Back to your old tricks, aren't you,
L'keri?** Orvena thought with a twist of her thin lips. It had
surprised her to see the brownrider spending so much time with just
one person- Benna. What was special about Benna? Orvena looked over
the greenrider's appearance. **Nothing that I can tell.**
Pushing to her feet, Orvena followed her wingmate out into the
Weyrbowl. "Benna," she called with a voice of concern. "Are you
alright?"
Benna's anger was already dissipating. She never held onto it for
long. Only this time, she wished she could, because without the heat
of anger to hide them, only confusion and sadness remained. She had
made it worse. She always made it worse between them. Why couldn't she
have just accepted his apology and let it go?
She heard a voice behind her speaking but had been too lost in her own
self-recriminations to have caught what was said. "What?" She wiped at
her eyes, which were beginning to leak.
"Are you okay?" Orvena asked again, crinkling the corners of her eyes
in concern. "I couldn't help but notice what was transpiring between
you and L'keri."
"Oh," Benna blushed, adding embarrassment to the confusion and
sadness. They had gotten a little loud, hadn't they? Great. "I'm
alright," she tried to smile, but it was an abysmal effort.
"I'm not sure how well you know L'keri, but maybe this is for the
best." Orvena clucked.
Feeling an instinctive urge, despite their fight, to defend L'keri,
her eyes narrowed a bit, "What do you mean?"
Orvena tilted her head. "Has he told you about Ariadne?"
He had not and she thought that if she ought to hear about some woman
from his past, she should hear it from him. But, a sense of morbid
curiosity stole over her and she asked, "Who is that?"
"He hasn't told you?" Orvena tsked. "Ariadne was his weyrmate. While
Ariadne was pregnant with L'keri's child he was running around with
another woman, got her pregnant too. He ended up moving in with the
second woman and completely abandoning Ariadne and the child."
She definitely had not heard this story and she did not like the
picture that it painted. She knew she ought to wait until she heard
his side of the story but right now she was not in the best frame of
mind for that. She wanted which child it was that this Ariadne had,
his son or daughter, or perhaps a third child she had never even met.
"Where is she now?"
Orvena shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know. She was living at River
Bluff when the collapse happened. I am not sure if she made it out.
I'll bet L'keri doesn't even know, which just shows you how deeply he
holds affection for the people in his life." The greenrider licked her
lips. "You should be careful, Benna. L'keri gives up or quits
everything he starts, that's why he can't keep a relationship either."
Benna didn't want to hear any more. Between this and the fight they'd
had, which was spurred as much by her confusion over the strange way
he'd been acting as by him getting drunk and missing their run, her
head was spinning. Was this the problem then? Not that she'd done
something wrong, but that he'd just gotten tired of her?
"Thank you, Orvena. I'll keep it in mind," she tried to give the other
greenrider a smile, but it was a poor one.
"You do that, Benna. I would hate to see you get hurt." Orvena said
again. "Come see me if you need anything." The greenrider waved over
her shoulder as she turned a left. There was a decidedly smug grin
upon her face.
