Bryvin received the message in the usual way. Not the way that people
who didn't know him well from turns in the past but the way the men
who'd sailed with him knew to contact him. So when he found the
colored rocks on the path during his normal walk around the Hold he
knew to go to the tavern.

The room was dark when he entered and shook the rain from his cloak
but soon his eyes adjusted and he spotted a familiar face. With a broad
smile, he clasped hands with the Captain then slid into a seat. Captain,
his faithful canine had been named for this very man. He now laid down
at Bryvin's feet and kept an eye on the room. "What brings you back to
Sunstone so soon?"

"Lord Bryvin." The weathered face gave a grim smile but returned the
grip with a firm hand. "News. Wouldn't have done it for anyone else
but you, mind." He pushed the extra mug of ale towards the Lord
Holder. "Take it." He took a heavy swig from his own mug, wiped his
mouth with the back of his hand, and stared at the man across from
him. "Picked up an interesting cargo at Turquoise bay on my way to
Opal Cove. Blonde little minx. Said she had to get to the Weyr as soon
as she could." He sat back, and held his hands over his chest. "Had a
body that would make a man weep, if you know what I mean, didn't
realize until I had her on board that I knew her." He tapped his mug.
"Vreena. Your Lady wife's maid. But she was sneaking out of the Bay
like she didn't want to be seen, get me?"

Bryvin half grinned at the description. "Yes," he nodded. "I know who
you mean." He remembered those very curves but had elected not to
pursue his wife's maids back then. "But how is that news?" he was a
bit confused.

"Cause right after I dropped her off, I talk to a Harper I know for
some local news and gossip. Seems like another one of your Lady's
maids went off to Dolphin's Cove. And...there's something more and yer
not gonna like it m'Lord." He pushed the ale mug closer to him. "
Seems that one of my boy's talked to a girl at the Bay who was with
your Lady after the death of your little girl. Girl told my lad that
there was blood all over the wall and cradle that she had to clean
up."

Bryvin saw red and for a moment he couldn't even speak. His mouth
worked and eyes flamed before he visibly controlled himself. It wouldn't
do for him to lose control in a public place but it was obvious
someone was going to pay for whatever had happened to his daughter.
Including the Lord of Turquoise Bay and his daughter if they'd killed
her. "Thank you," he ground out finally and picked up his drink to
polish it off.
"You know there will be a reward in this for you. But I've got to be
going now. How long will you be here at the Hold?"

The other man nodded, recognizing the expression of the Lord Holder,
and thankful that he was not going to be the recipient of that
controlled rage. "Four days, m'Lord. Long enough to load Taril's cargo
and head back to Opal Cove."

"I'll be sending a passenger with you. Normal rate," he said and
turned to go. Once out the door, he started up the street through the
fog and rain. Then he paused by the entrance to an alley.

There was a scant footfall, then a dark figure stepped just enough out
of the shadows to reveal a foot and the glimpse of a hand. "My Lord
has need of me?" The voice was soft, revealing nothing about the
figure.

"Yes," he said. "I want to know exactly what is inside my daughter's
coffin at Turquoise Bay. Do you need any marks?"

There was a long silence as the figure debated internally on any
necessities that might be required. "No, my Lord. It shall be done."

"As always, I will be grateful in whatever way is required," he nodded
in the figure's direction. He paused a moment longer as the figure
disappeared into the shadows. Then he walked slowly back to the Hold
unmindful of the rain. But engulfed in a wave of deep-seated anger
burning in his chest. Not unlike the one Yriadha was carrying against
Stenlis. His would only be slaked by finding and dealing with his
daughter's killer.
