Description: Blue flit Marli begins to recover
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 11, day 27 of Turn 9
As was becoming habit G'wen's eyes popped open. He didn't need to look
over the sleeping form of his weyrmate to know it was still before
dawn. It had been this way ever since Marli had collapsed in Neath's
wallow. And by the way the curtain between their weyr and the wallows
of their two greens shivered, he also knew there was yet another
blizzard outside. There had been so many since the loss of Paetri.
Why couldn't there have been one the day of her death? Then there
would have been no Threadfall. She would still be here.
Like he had done every single morning since that day, he slipped out
from under the bedfurs, careful to not let any of the cold creep in.
Wrapping a blanket around his small form, he tiptoed across the room
and quietly pushed the curtain aside. What met his eyes were the
familiar shapes of Neath and Eillispeth. Biting his lip, G'wen forced
himself to look at the spot where Marli had taken residence since that
horrible day. He breathed out when he saw the tiny flit curled around
Neath's headknob. Five sevendays and Marli was still with them.
Feral's eyes gleamed in the darkness, where she was keeping vigil over
her eggs. She had pretty much accepted Marli as a part of her flock?
fair? court? entourage?
Eillispeth's eyes opened partially when she sensed G'wen's presence.
"Shh Eilli," G'wen whispered and patted her on the head.
}:I'm awake too:{ Neath said, also opening her eyes a bit. Marli
remained sleeping.
**How is he?**
}:Better, getting better all the time:{ Neath glanced over to her
fellow green. }:Wouldn't you say?:{
}: Yes, he's improving,:{ Eillispeth agreed.
G'wen let out the breathe he was holding and tip-toed over to Marli.
Even in the dim light he could see--for the first time--that the tiny
flit's colour was back to its full luster. The flit was still so very
thin, but maybe that would get better too. Just then the tiny flit
opened an eye and let out a loud squawk.
"Shh Marli, I'm just checking you over." G'wen hoped the noise didn't
wake E'naer up. His weyrmate needed his sleep.
That was a futile wish. Wrapped in bedfur, E'naer peered out, "Are you
there, G'wen?"
Dusk tried to fly over E'naer's head but got trapped in the curtain,
falling onto the poor man's head with a loud squawk. That set Marli
off, who stood up to chitter loudly at the small bronze.
"Faranth, we have too many firelizards here;" E'naer said, while
trying to disentangle Dusk from his hair without pulling his hair out
too.
"Oops, sorry" G'wen went over to free his weyrmate from his bronze. He
shoved Dusk onto his shoulder, where the tiny flit preceded to crawl
on top of his head and scold E'naer. "Morning!" G'wen said brightly,
laughing at the absurdity of the scene.
"Morning," E'naer muttered. Looking at the weather, he continued,
"Shards, where's the summer?"
"A few months back," G'wen teased, standing on tip-toe and giving
E'naer a kiss. "Come look at Marli, his colour's finally returned."
The flit in question gave a bright chirp and rubbed his chin against
Neath's headknobs.
"I'll take a look at him," E'naer replied. Walking over to Neath, he
reached to take the blue firelizard so he could inspect him closer.
For the first time Marli arched his back and seemed to actually
welcome E'naer's hand on him. G'wen let out the breath he found
himself holding. That was the first time the blue had seemed to
actually want some affection. His eyes whirled green in content as
G'wen reached over and softly rubbed on Marli's headknobs.
"He_is_doing better, isn't he?" G'wen said to E'naer.
"Yes, he is. The colour is better and he seems to have gained some of
his lost weight back," E'naer gave the flit a thorough inspections and
then few affectionate scratches. "Definitely no longer apathetic."
"Do you want some food, Marli?" When the flit visibly perked up and
chirped, G'wen laughed and turned to E'naer. "Sounds like I need to go
get some breakfast for all of us." He gestured to the hide that kept
the worst of the blizzard away from the greens' wallows. "At least we
can have a nice breakfast in bed, and maybe something more?" He gave
E'naer a teasing grin.
"Sounds like a good idea," E'naer replied and winked back.
G'wen turned to go but his eyes caught the sight of E'naer's old
scars. Lightly he traced a finger along one part, before smiling at
his weyrmate. He thought about his own scoring that ran the length of
his back. They'd survived. "Life does go on," he mummered under his
breath."
"Indeed it does," E'naer replied but he couldn't help an involuntary
flinch. It happened everytime someone touched his Thread scars.
Everytime he wished he had gotten over that by now.
G'wen gave him a quick kiss and disappeared through the curtain. They
were dragonriders, some of them survived, some didn't. Such was life.
