Corowal shuffled thru the personal file once again while waiting for
the man described it to answer his summons. Of the all current
assitant Stewards, Jihan seemed to be most qualified. He had some
previous experience in legal issues and he had given Corowal a good
impression with that fence-dispute -case. He was also one of the men
who had worked diligently and invisibly under Sarban.

Jihan took a deep breath before knocking on the Lord Holder's door.
It was not often that he had occasion to speak with the Lord Holder,
and had never been asked to see him one on one. "My Lord," he said
with a straight backed bow when he was invited into the room.

"Jihan, please come in and take a seat," Corowal flashed him a smile.

"Thank you, sir." The assistant steward did so with a polite smile of
his own, hoping he was hiding his nervousness adequately. He was not
quite sure why the Lord Holder had asked to see him specifically.

"How the new contract between those two cotholder's progressing?"
Corowal started with other matters first.

"They are finished, my Lord," Jihan said, pulling them out from his
satchel. He had brought them just in case.

"Good," Corowal gave them quick glance and placed on the desk. "As you
know, we have arrested a group of holdless bandit and are arranging a
trial for them. I'm still looking for someone to act as a procecutor.
You seem to be qualified, are you interested?" he flashed one of his
charming smiles.

Jihan's eyes widened slightly. He certainly knew the trial was coming
up. The whole Hold was talking about it. It was to be a large public
spectacle for sure. And Corowal wanted him to take the lead? "I...
would be honored, sir."

"Thank you, I know you do well. Captain Zandan has been gathering
evidence if you want to co-ordinate with him. We also need set a date
for it and determine who to call as witness."

"I heard one of the bandits turned informant," Jihan said, remembering
the interrogation that one of his fellow assistant stewards had been
present for. "I assume he will not be tried with the rest."

"No, he was granted immunity in exhange of selling out his mates. Also
a cotholder was arrestad with the bandits. He had been helping them,"
Corowal replied.

"I hear that family has asked a Harper to represent him, though that
may just be a rumor." While waiting to hear who would be prosecuting
the case, the assistant stewards had filled the time throwing out
theories about the case. Some Jihan was sure were unfounded, but a
few, such as this one, sounded plausible.

"I don't know about that and I don't want to know about it," Corowal
said with rejective hand gesture. "I'm trying to avoid rumours and
prejustices so I can be a fair judge."

"Of course," Jihan nodded, relieved that the Lord had not hoped to
discuss details with him. "I would not want to get into particulars.
I will speak with Captain Zandan this afternoon."

Corowal nodded. "Harper Neliar has been acting as a defender in most
cases I've dealt with." There really wasn't large pool of people to
drawn from, although Harper Hall's nearness helped.

Jihan had worked with the Harper many times in the past when sorting
out legal questions. "He is a fair man and represents all without
passion or prejudice." An important quality in someone defending the
people of the Hold.

Corowal had also worked with the harper in previous cases. "Yes, it's
important that the trial is fair and gives no reason for complaits.
It's going to be rather visible and there will be curious audience."

"I will do my utmost to serve the Hold, my Lord," Jihan said, worried
more about how Corowal would rate his performance than the Hold at
large.

"I have all confidence in you," Corowal said. And if Jihan performed
well, he was going to offer him the Steward's position. It had been
open too long and Sarban was obviously not coming back.
