Bilpen smiled as he looked at the clay on his fingers. It was the
sample the journeyman had just brought him from their find about a
mile from their new location. "This looks about perfect for roof
tiles," he nodded. "How big is the deposit?"
"I think it covers an area about the size of the average cot," replied
Avcan. "Goes down around so far," he waved his hand at waist level. "We'd
need to survey it properly."
"Good, good," Bilpen nodded. "We're already building kilns for both
the lime and for the tiles. The locals seem to think there are other
similar deposits. How many workers do you need to bring it to the
site?"
"About half a dozen," Avcan said. "They reckon there's another similar size
deposit roughly half a candlemark's ride to the North."
"That is excellent," he nodded. "I hear there are some crafters
hereabouts who may be able to help excavate and transport it closer."
"I believe so, and we might be able to ask for help from the Weyr." Avcan
thought for a moment, "We might need dragon help to get some of it moved to
the right place quickly."
"Excellent thought," Bilpen clapped the man on the shoulder. "The
former Weyrleader of River Bluff will be coming for a visit to the
site soon. We can ask for his help and suggestions."
Avcan nodded. "That would be helpful. I also noticed that there seemed to be
some different colours, so I could imagine we might be able to trade some
after we're done here."
"Good, good." Bilpen's smile grew wider. "We don't want all those
buildings to have the same roofs and we can do some fancy moldings
and stamps to give the buildings some character."
"We could see if we can get a specific local design maybe, show off our
skills?" suggested Avcan. "Make this a place people really want to come to."
"Brilliant," exclaimed the big man with a roll of his 'r's' "That is
exactly the attitude I want to see. I want this Weyr to be a work of
art. I want the individual dragonrider's weyrs to be finished with
plaster on the inside with wooden doors. I want their bathing pools
to have tiled edges where they can. Electric lights but indirect not
glaring down from the ceiling with a bare bulb. More like partially
turned glows." He gestured like he was painting the walls and ceiling
with light.
Believe it or not, Avcan could see the vision as well. "Kitchens the
Bakercraft would envy - we'll be able to get them some fantastic ovens."
"I like the way you think young man," Bilpen clapped him on the
shoulder. "Why don't you draw up some plans for those ovens you're
thinking about and we'll make sure your Master knows exactly what
you've done, shall we?"
"On it right now," Avcan said with a nod to his senior. "I'll have them to
you before the end of tomorrow."
"Good Man," Bilpen nodded back. "In the meantime you go on up the
hill. We've got some tents and hot food for our workers."
"Much appreciated," Avcan grinned as his stomach rumbled. "This is hungry
making work."
"Aye, it is that," Bilpen agreed. But of course the big man agreed
with all food as was evident from his girth. Good natured to the core
his wife also agreed he should have as much as he always wanted. That
made her the perfect mate to his mind, and she was a goodly cook. "I
think you'll find some very good food up there. My wife's been cooking
all day."
