Ninaine watched the bronze and gold dragons as they took to the air
and felt her eyes sting with tears. She knew why he felt he had to go,
but as she laid a hand on her swollen belly, watching N'call leave was
one of the hardest things she had ever done. Part of her felt
abandoned, another part fiercely jealous of Teseada. Would he spend
his nights with her now, wrapped in her arms? Teseada wasn't swollen
and cumbersome like she was.
When they went /between/, a soft sob escaped Ninaine as she turned
towards Luneth and buried her face in the soft hide to quietly weep.
Luneth too was upset, not only because Ninaine was crying, but because
Haloth, who had been her near constant companion since her injury, was
no longer at her side. And she would no longer be able to have the big
couch; they would have to move.
The weyr was too large for just Ninaine, and it was needed for another
bronzerider, most likely a soon to graduate weyrling. She would be
placed in a small ground floor weyr to accommodate both her pregnancy
and Luneth's wing. She had started boxing up her belongings after
N'call had given her his kiss goodbye and left for Teseada's weyr.
Ninaine wiped her eyes, suddenly angry at her weyrmate even though she
had agreed that he should go, that it might be good for him,
especially if Onnyth was the first to rise. He could be a Weyrleader,
everything that he strove for.
Turning away from Luneth, she looked at the chests of her clothes and
her belongings. They didn't seem like much, but she couldn't lift them
or carry them herself. Drudges were supposed to be coming soon to help
her. Shoulders slumped, she sat on a chair and stared out of the weyr
ledge to the spot where she'd last seen them. Feeling useless and
alone, she wiped at the tears that wouldn't stop flowing. She still
had over a month to give birth and she was huge. Horribly huge. And
she had to see a Healer every week now, just to make sure the babies
were okay. There was no way she could travel, even if Luneth's wing
would hold up to the flight to the new Weyrhold.
Worries gnawed at her. What if N'call never came back? What if he
decided that he wanted Teseada more than her? What if he was hurt?
What if he wasn't back when the babies were born? What if she had to
give birth without him? It was possible. So many what ifs and she'd
never mentioned her fears to him. It would worry him, make him
hesitate. Ninaine felt the a strong kick and laid her hand over her
bulging abdomen, feeling what must have been a small foot poke out at
her palm. Faranth, she felt alone. And she was feeling sorry for
herself.
Sniffling a runny nose, she looked up at the knock. Calling out, she
allowed the drudges to come in and with effort, rose from the chair.
She watched as they picked up her belongings and began to move them,
then struggled not to allow another fresh round of tears to well up.
Giving a final look around at the weyr, which now felt empty and
vacant, she followed them at a slow waddle to the new weyr that had
been assigned to her.
