The things with Weyrs were that they were very easy to enter, but not
always as easy to leave. The amount of people allowed for an easy time
blending in; drudges were everywhere and were hardly noticed in their
drab apparel. In Dragonsfall, it was even more helpful that they were
clad so thickly in warm clothes. Simple knots, simple to enter, simple
to disappear. And drudges talked. Gossip, news, who slept with whom,
which riders had secret fetishes, or even which rider had come and
gone from certain holds with unusual guests or packages. Yes, drudges
loved to talk and gossip, especially to a newcomer.
The creche on the other hand was far less easy to breach. The workers
there were keenly sensitive to the children and everyone was noticed.
It wasn't as easy to just slip into; one had to have a reasonable
excuse, especially if a certain babe was being carefully watched. But,
on the other hand, some of the workers were so naive! No one would
ever think to steal one of their charges. The Weyr was a safe place
for these babies. Watched, cared for, coddled. Except...
The blonde woman, Vreena. Lusilk watched her as she swept and tidied.
It wasn't difficult to get a few idle question quickly answered by
observant disgruntled drudges. She was from Sunstone and very few of
the drudges were fond of her. She was arrogant, far too convinced of
her own good looks, wanted to appear high-born, though obviously
wasn't, and apparently was far more temperamental with the children
than she should have been. And, she liked women, but entertained one
brownrider often enough to be noticed.
Hm. Sunstone woman with some sort of maid training, working in the
Dragonsfall creche. How...convenient. Also convenient was the fact
that she appeared to take interest in one female child in particular.
When the child wasn't at the creche, the child was with this woman.
The child was never left unattended. But, Lusilk noted, when this
blonde woman cared for the child, the baby often cried and was
ignored, or the bottle was given a bit more roughly than it should
have been. The woman clearly wasn't caring for the child because she
was attached. Even the rocking was done with frustration.
Lusilk idly wondered if she'd have to kill the woman. It would cause
her no grief to do so. It would cause a mess, and perhaps an outcry
when she was discovered. _When_. She could be well out of the Weyr by
the time she was. She considered it. Possibility. Definite
possibility. A dead woman couldn't report a stolen child, now could
she? And the creche's number of children varied, surely. There were so
many. But there was also another potential option.
She considered this option carefully, ticking over the possible
ramifications. She knew several things. One, the Weyrwoman was rumored
to be very distracted with personal matters. Two, a strange woman
leaving the Weyr with a child would be noticed. Three, passage out of
the Weyr had to be guaranteed and hard to trace, at least until
Sunstone was reached. Any fallout after Bryvin could handle. That was
his problem. Her eye twitched as she glanced at Vreena, rocking the
crying baby in her arms with a look of frustration on her face. This
plan could work and Bryvin would be in _her_ debt. She hid her smile.
