Bryvin walked slowly down the hidden staircase he'd traveled so many
times in the past but this time he knew the room he entered would be
empty. She was gone.
He slid the hidden panel back into the wall and walked into the room
and looked around at the covered furniture. All evidence of Danrina
had been removed. He stood in the middle of the room feeling the
emptiness in his heart as well as his hold.
He might be Lord of a large and prosperous Holding but his personal
happiness wasn't something he seemed to have any control over. He'd
lost his first love to a conspiracy that got him knocked over the head
and sent to sea only to find out later that she'd been carrying his
child and gone mad flinging herself from tower onto the rocks below.
He'd lost Eladrie.
He placed his hands behind his back and walked toward the small
balcony. He'd spent turns wandering with pirates and bandits only to
find himself at Sunstone and working for its Lord as his Steward. He
smiled. That had been a turn of good luck and gazing out toward the
bay and lovely sunset he counted himself very lucky indeed. For he'd
met Danrina.
He found another love in her. But circumstances foiled his plans to
marry once again.
Lord Morin's ship had disappeared and when they'd finally given up the
search, he'd maneuvered to be considered by the conclave.to replace
his former Lord. While he was blood by birth at Amethyst Cliff the
relationship was thin enough to require a condition. The price had
been his promise to marry Lord Xelfin's other daughter Xeladrie.
He hadn't wanted her and she hadn't wanted him but they'd been
corralled into the marriage as the price of his confirmation. Things
seemed to be going well at first and he'd even hoped to find affection
for his wife in time. But it had all turned wrong after the birth of
their first child.
But even though he couldn't marry her, he'd found some happiness with
Danrina and established her in these apartments as his mistress. For a
time… he was happy.
He kicked at a small cup on the floor and watched its fine tissue thin
porcelain shatter against the wall. Just like his relationship with
Danrina had shattered when she lost their baby and he, fresh from
killing Stenlis hadn't been there to console her.
Just like Xeladrie's sanity had shattered at the birth of their daughter and
she'd sent her away to hide her from him under some misguided notion that
he would mistreat one of his children. He'd divorced her, of course, and sent
her to the mind healers. But that hadn't found his missing child. Not yet...
He sighed and bent to pick up the pieces of the very expensive piece and
dropped them carefully into the pocket of his coat. He'd lost both Xeladrie
and Danrina.
Danrina had left Sunstone and he'd let her go. She wanted to make her
own life somewhere separate from the memories here and he couldn't
really blame her. He couldn't marry her while her husband lived and he
found himself reluctant to make plans for the man's demise after what
he'd done to Stenlis. He was old and gumpy but not a criminal.
Stenlis had deserved what he'd gotten but Galrad didn't.
Clicking toe nails on the floor and the panting sound of a canine
warned him that Captain had found him. He turned back with a smile.
"Hello," he stooped to caress the dark head of his companion. "I need
to take you hunting, don't I," he smiled. They hadn't been hunting in
awhile. It was a sport they both enjoyed. Maybe he should think about
that instead of the bevy of young women about to fall on him like a
pack of beasts.
"Oh well," he sighed. "Maybe one of them will have a brain that thinks
about more than pretty clothes and dancing." Captains tail wagged
slowly and his tongue lolled out.
"Come on then," he said, turning away from the room and his maudlin
memories of failed relationships. He reentered the passage and slid
the silent panel shut behind him. He latched it and ascended the
stairs back to his own room and its matching panel.
