Characters: Elana
Description: Elana pokes around where she doesn't belong
Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 1, day 15 of Turn 10

Her heart thumped as she crept down the hallway. Elana looked over her shoulder and saw nobody. Unsurprising-- this was the drudge's quarters, and in the middle of the afternoon everyone was busy doing what they were supposed to do. _She_ should have been tending to the pile of mending that Gibella had given her, but that could wait. This was _far_ more fun.

Quick as a tunnelsnake, Elana put her hand on the doorknob to Ambra's room and slipped inside. Her heart pounded as she stood on the other side of the door, her ears straining for any sound or indication that she'd been spotted. Nothing.

Relieved, she let out a sigh and surveyed the room. It was as small as her own, and as her eyes adjusted to the gloom she spotted a glow near the door, which she opened. The room contained a narrow bed with a pretty pink quilt, a wardrobe with the doors open to reveal a closet full of dresses, and a dresser with a top cluttered with small boxes and bottles. The table beside the bed held a couple of dog-eared harper tales and there were a pair of boots, a pair of regular shoes, and a fancy blue pair of dancing shoes lined up neatly by the door. It wasn't that dissimilar to Elana's own room, although Elana owned much less.

She took a moment to poke through Ambra's dresses and even held up one of Ambra's Gather gowns against herself before reluctantly hanging it back in the wardrobe. The dress was made out of a lovely pale blue cotton that would go smashingly with her beautiful red hair. It was clear that Ambra's family had marks. Elana beat back a twinge of envy, then set about her task.

She found the ring hidden in the toe of Ambra's boot. Of course Ambra had it-- it was what Elana herself would have done if their situations were reversed. The boot was a clever hiding spot, but one that Elana herself had used in the past to hide goodies from her sister. She paused to admire it; the ring was silver and the pearl a tiny, lustrous little moon in its setting. **No one would know if I took it.**

The thought came unbidden. She slipped the ring onto her finger and held her hand up in front of her to admire it. Perhaps Sellimere would get blamed for the theft. Perhaps the Headwoman would chalk its loss up to a careless mistake. But if she took it now, Elana knew she'd never get to wear it out in the Hold for everyone to admire-- and what was the point of secret jewelry? Reluctantly she slipped the ring off her finger and tucked it safely into the pocket of her dress. **You'll get one soon enough,** she thought to herself as she pressed her ear up against the door to make sure the hall was empty. **Somehow.** A moment later she slipped out, leaving the room empty and exactly as she'd left it.
