Yriadha

Yriadha watched as Rimmelle took a sip of the tea, a slight upturn in
the corners of her mouth the only evidence of her satisfaction. "Of
course, he should keep his promise, Rimmelle. It's the only proper
thing to do."

Rimmelle grimaced a bit at the slightly bitter aftertaste of the
drink, but so flattered was she by the offer of a private tea with the
Headwoman, was willing to overlook it. "I don't know why he's been
avoiding me. When I told him, Headwoman, he was surprised, but he
wasn't angry. He's been helping and making sure I'm eating right. But
for the past couple of sevendays, it's like I don't exist."

"I'm sure he's only busy. Would you like a cracker, perhaps?" Yriadha
offered the plate, keeping the pleasant smile lifting her lips. "The
stomach can be so troublesome at this stage."

"Oh, thank you." Rimmelle took a cracker and nibbled on it. "He
promised he would wed me, but he's not mentioned it again. I'm
frightened. If my father were to find out...." Her eyes welled up with
the beginnings of tears and she wiped at them.

Yriadha patted her hand, her expression never changing. "Don't worry
Rimmelle. I'll speak to him first thing in the morning and get this
settled. You have my promise on that. Would you like more sweetner in
your tea? I'm afraid that this batch turned a bit bitter, wouldn't you
say?"

"Yes please." Rimmelle exhaled with relief, then offered a brighter
smile as Yriadha added another dollop of sweetner and cream. The
thought of finally wedding Riadem, who she had pined for since his
return, made the beginnings of the tears vanish. He'd been so kind and
so sweet to her, especially at first. She'd pursued him and he'd
responded in kind, perhaps not saying that he loved her, but she could
tell when he touched her. She'd never been with anyone else, had saved
everything for him. It was only right that he wed her, especially now!
He had promised..."Thank you, Headwoman. Thank you so much. I knew
that I could come to you with this." The other drudges had tried
telling her otherwise, but she didn't believe them. She knew that if a
drudge worked hard, the Headwoman was actually easier to be around.
And this involved her son. Who else would she go to?

"You're very welcome." There was another pat on the hand. "Finish your
tea and then you get to bed for some rest, hm? It'll be taken care of
my tomorrow afternoon, so don't worry." Yriadha watched as the young
woman drained her cup, then rose to usher her out of her quarters.
"I'm sure he'll be speaking to you tomorrow, Rimmelle. I guarantee
it."

"Thank you. Thank you so much, Headwoman." Relief filling her, she
turned, then gave Yriadha a hug on impulse.

Yriadha stiffened, but patted Rimmelle's shoulder lightly. "Alright
then. Go to bed." She kept the smile on her face until Rimmelle turned
a corner, then allowed it to drop before she felt her cheeks stiffen
from the effort. **Stupid girl.** She wiped her hands on her skirts as
though to brush off the contact she'd had with the drudge. As if she'd
ever allow a drudge to have a claim on her eldest son, much less marry
him! Privately, she was grateful that Riadem's interest had settled on
a much more appropriate young woman. The little Lady Noriya was
perfect. Good breeding, lovely, and related to just the right family.

Yriadha swept back into her quarters and picked up the drained tea
cup. She'd had just enough left of the herbal remedy that Riadem had
given her for her own "little problem". One cup had been effective
enough for her, and thankfully there's been just enough for this.
Riadem hadn't known that it would be to his benefit as well.

Yriadha glanced at the candles on her mantle, measuring the marks. In
one candlemark, her promise would be kept and the little issue would
be settled. Her son would be free to keep his attentions were they
were and as soon as Rimmelle was released from the infirmary, she'd be
dismissed and sent home. What her father did with her then, well...the
drudge should have thought of that.
