K'yne

K'yne

"I'm amazed every time," K'yne said with a smile as he straightened and looked at Jadirah and Erivana. Perhaps it was old hat to some, but listening to their baby's heartbeat never ceased to amaze the brownrider.

"It's a good, healthy sound. Your son, or daughter, will be quite well," Jadirah reassured them. "I'll see you in two more sevendays, unless you have trouble, Erivana. Go ahead and get dressed and head out."

As soon as the Master Healer had left, and the curtains had dropped for privacy, she lowered her hand to her belly and said, "Do you have hopes one way or the other?

There was a glow in K'yne's dark blue eyes as he looked at Erivana and then tenderly put one of his large hands on her stomach. "I actually don't. I got to experience a little of both when my niece and nephew were born. Do you have a preference?"

She looked down at his hand over hers, which felt warm and protecting. "I think I'd like a son."

K'yne gave her one of his rare full smiles, transforming his serious features. "Yeah? You have names picked out?" Saying that she wanted a son was a compliment, in K'yne's mind, because in his experience women did not often want a son if they hated or disliked something about the father for fear of having a miniature version of the man.

"Not yet. We should talk about it, though." She turned her hand a little under his to squeeze gently.

"Well, why don't we get you dressed and we can grab a snack and head back to the weyr and I will tell you some of the names I've thought of," he said.

"Sounds like a plan," she said, slipping to the floor and reaching for her clothes to pull them on. "I wish I could tell you I've gone and thought about a number of them but I haven't, really, yet. I wanted to...make sure it was all going well, I guess."

"I think that's natural," K'yne said, not watching her dress, even though he very much wanted to. "At least, my sister always made a stink about not picking out names when she was pregnant because it was 'bad luck' she said." He rolled his eyes.

"I imagine it's more fun to think about them with you, too. Your sister...did she wait till after the child were born to name them?"

"Yes, although I'm sure she'd given it plenty of thought, she just wouldn't tell any of the rest of us what she had decided." K'yne offered her his arm once she had finished dressing.

She took his arm and let him start escorting her. "So come on, tell me now what you're thinking about, I'm curious. What was your name before you Impressed?"

The brownrider wrinkled his nose. He hated his full name, which worked in his favor since he never had to use it. "Kavyne." He told her, glancing sideways at her. "So far I've been thinking about Keriv for a boy or Kerivana for a girl, if we use my name first. Or, if we use yours, Evyin for a boy and Erynna for a girl." He felt a little nervous revealing what he had been thinking. He had never named children before and had no idea if those were even usable.

"Oh, I love Keriv, a lot," she said, eyes lighting up. "Kerivana is too much of my name it feels like," and she sounded a little abashed. "What about Keriva?" she said after a moment.

"I like that," K'yne said. "Maybe even Keri for short."

"I like it." She considered if she could find anything else, hesitantly suggested, "Kavana could maybe also work for a girl? Vynan for a boy?"

"I like Kavana," he said as he led her into the Dining Cavern. It felt oddly right, K'yne thought, walking into the Dining Cavern with Erivana on his arm discussing baby names.

It was becoming more routine for them to do this, have meals together or otherwise act like a couple bound together by choice, or affection, and not just to be thrown together by chance.

"Kavana or Keriv. I like those as choices. You don't have any relatives you might want to name someone after?"

"My father's name is Y'kar and my mother Eaimale," he said as they joined the line for the service table.

She scrunched up her nose as she sniffed at the food, feeling hungry. "Rivakar could be a good name for a boy." she suggested.

"I like that, and my father would be thrilled to have part of his name included, I'm sure. My mother's name pretty much dominated all of my siblings names, except for my half-brother, he mostly got my father's name."

They got to the head of the line and she picked out what she wanted for her tray.

"Well, then, he might like it. I like the idea of following tradition. We'll have to write them all down eventually to look over them. You don't happen to have hide on you, do you?"

K'yne fished into the front pocket of his shirt and pulled out a tiny square of paper. "I keep them on me," he admitted, "because I never know when I might get some orders from R'enh and need to jot them down."

"So let's note these down and think about them some more." Her stomach audibly growled. "After food, possibly," she amended.

"You eat, I'll write what we've said so far," K'yne suggested, nudging her plate toward her as he took the piece of paper and began jotting their ideas down. It struck him that in the blink of an eye one of these names would cease to be a theory and would suddenly be a new piece of their lives.
