Bryvin put his hand on the box on his desk. He hadn't shown it to
anyone as he'd promised. But he did want another opinion before he
really decided what to do about the information it contained. He
trusted his cousin and his sister but with different things. If he'd
learned anything about Wirnan, it was the depth to which he'd sunk
over the last turn. That was bound to change anyone including someone
who'd always expected the best out of everyone around him.
"Pifer," he called through the half open door.
The understeward almost immediately appeared in the doorway, as though
expecting or had been hoping for the summons. The man rubbed his hands
nervously against each other, but kept the simpering smile on his
face. "Yes, my Lord?"
"Please fetch Wirnan for me," he said pulling the box toward him. "I
need to discuss something with him."
Pifer's curiousity and disappointment was obvious as his eyes lingered
on the box. He'd hoped to have done sort of clue as to what the
contents might be. They were clearly important. "Of course, my Lord."
Bowing and half-hoping that he'd be included in the discussion, he
went to Wirnan's office to deliver the summons.
Wirnan worked there diligently, his cane leaned against the wall
beside him, and one eye on the door. He did not reach for the cane,
but he was ready to – until he saw it was Pifer. He relaxed. But only
a little bit.
"Ah, Mister Pifer. What can I do for you?"
Managing to sound both officious and sycophantic at the same time,
Pifer issued the summons. "Lord Bryvin requires your presence
immediately. "
"Ooh, that sounds ominous," said Wirnan as he stood and took up his
cane after all. "What's the damage, eh?" he asked, grinning and
nudging Pifer as he passed.
Pifer couldn't help the glare at Wirnan's back. The outsider had
taken the position he'd worked so hard for, immediately being taken
into the Lord Holder's confidence, while he, who had lived at the
Hold since infancy, was kept in the dark. He cleared his throat. "I'm
sure Lord Bryvin will explain it to us once we arrive." As they
approached the office, he announced Wirnan. "My Lord, as you
requested. "
"Thank you Pifer," he said as he looked up. "And can you send someone
for Wicoran as well?"
Then he refocused on his cousin. "Wirnan," he rose from his chair.
"Hows the leg doing? Better I trust?"
"Better, thank you!" Wirnan confirmed jovially as he reached out to
shake Bryvin's hand. "Much better, in fact." He had been resigned to
the fact that it would never be better. It was still not as it was
when he was a younger man, but that was true for everyone, was it not?
"What can I do for you, my Lord?" he asked.
"Well," Bryvin smiled. "I want to put that brain of yours to work on a
problem. But first we'll need to wait for Wicoran."
Pifer was well trained enough to hide his annoyance as he left the
room. When he returned only a moment later with Wicoran, and the old
man took a seat, Pifer realized there was no longer an empty chair.
He glanced at the Lord Holder, stifled an abused sigh and left,
closing the door behind him.
Wicoran nodded at Wirnan, then turned his gaze to Bryvin. "Good
afternoon, my Lord."
"Good afternoon," Bryvin nodded back. "As you are aware, Wirnan is my
cousin and also my steward. He spent a great deal of time as Steward
at Amber Hills before he came to me here but I assure you of my
confidence in him and his ability to maintain... confidentiality." He
put his hand on the box Wicoran had delivered to him. Or rather to
Yriadha. "But right now, we must make plans for how first to proceed."
Wicoran nodded." Aye, we talked about the holding some and what it
needs." His eyes went you the box and then back up to Lord Bryvin,
then sat straighter. "Then you'll know we're needing her back, or one
of her sons. Can't change the past, but we still see the family for
who and what they are. Garnet Valley abandoned them, but their people
didn't. "
"Indeed," Bryvin nodded. "And I have some thoughts about a way to
bring some of the family back. But first I want to float the idea by
the both of you and see what you think." He had many sources within
the hold and knew that Yriadha didn't really want to leave here while
her property was in such disrepair. Nor did he personally want her to
leave, at least not right now. "Do either of you know her daughter
Humari? She's married to Taril the merchant. He's had some troubles
lately and perhaps might like to take on the task of managing or
leading the effort to restore his Mother in law's property. He has the
necessary skills and may have an inducement to take his wife away from
Sunstone for a time."
**A merchant?** Wicoran looked dubious, but after speaking to Wirnan,
and hearing of his faith in Lord Bryvin, he didn't object. Yriadha had
told him herself that her eldest son knew little of the property,
though they could have used his skill as a Healer. **Those who are
Holdless,** he thought the old phrase, **don't get to choose the best
redfruit in the Holder's basket.** "I knew she had another daughter.
Two, if I recall. Humari's the youngest, I believe. If you believe
that he's the skills for it, it may be enough that Humari is blood for
the people to accept him."
Wirnan nodded as he considered what he knew. He would liked to have
developed a soft spot in his heart for men with a limp, but he knew
too well how he had acquired his own for that. Merchants could run
into many different kinds of trouble. An inducement to take his wife
away, well... it seemed like this could be the kind of trouble that
could chase after a man.
But then, if Bryvin trusted him... Bryvin trusted Wirnan, after all.
And he was not about to say anything that might undermine Bryvin in
front of Wicoran.
"I don't know either of them personally," said Wirnan. "But he sounds
like a type we can work with."
"He knows how to rebuild," Bryvin agreed. "He's a business man and he
had to rebuild quite a bit of the docks and warehouses after the
volcano." They all knew about the volcano and how much it had
destroyed. "I think he can rebuild the Manor house quite easily."
"Now about these documents," he began pulling out a couple of others
to discuss with the other two men.
