"Hallmaster Thayde,
Per your request, I'm am writing to give you an update on Dolphineer
Jalodwyn of Jade Harbor. Dolphineer Jalodwyn appears to be in good
health at this time, but I have removed her from any heavy duties. At
her last examination, she is approximately fourteen sevendays pregnant
and the dolphins have stated that the unborn child is female. The
unborn child is in very good health and expected to arrive in month
five. I have discussed with her potentially sending the babe to be
adopted by a Crafter at Barrier Lake Weyrhold, or by a family here at
the Hold, but she has so far refused to consider it.
Dolphineer Jalodwyn has kept mostly to herself during her time here. I
fear that though she is physically healthy, her emotional state could
be better. I fear her lack of a spouse has left her isolated among
many of the folk here, excepting a few of her peers. There have been
several rumors here about the father of her child that seem to trouble
her greatly. Thankfully, she is close to another Sr. Journeywoman
dolphineer, Yasha, with whom she shares her quarters with.
I will write you again if anything changes or when the child is born.
Regards,
Perick, Master Healer, Jade Harbor Hold "
Thayde's frown only deepened as he read through the letter and then crumpled it in his hand. He had known she was pregnant, of course, the dolphins had confirmed it while they were on Fleet Duty together, but now, to have more confirmation about the _timing_ of the pregnancy.... Images of Jalodwyn's skin in the moonlight flashed through his mind, reminding him of their night on the beach together. Was the baby his, then? He had been so sure that it was not, that she was merely trying to manipulate him but now.... Doubt was beginning to niggle its way into his brain.
Responsibility and honor plucked at him, demanding that he do the 'right thing' but for once he did not want to be the responsible one, the honorable one, couldn't he just do something for himself? For once?
Smoothing the crumpled paper back out onto his desk, Thayde reread the line, "...her lack of a spouse has left her isolated." Well what could he do about that? He was already married, and happily. It's not like he could marry Jalowyn to fix her sullied reputation - he had already done that once.
"Master Perick,
Thank you for your correspondence and update on Journeywoman Jalodwyn's condition. Your cooperation and discretion are highly valued in this matter.
Regards,
Thayde, Hallmaster."
There was still no guarantee that the child was his and he would not make any moves that might make it seem as though he were taking ownership of it. The way he saw it, this was Jalodwyn's problem. She got herself into it and she would have to deal with the consequences of it.
