It was a good thing that D'kere had lived at Dragonsfall his entire life and pretty much knew everyone, even the new arrivals because his job as the Weyrlingmaster's Second often led to him having some interesting tasks. Today's task was finding a suitable bed partner for a Senior Weyrling, a male greenrider who had been raised holdbred and never had the opportunity to shed his virginity before Impressing.
The Weyrling had approached him about the issue a sevenday ago and he was just now getting around to feeling out his contacts around the Weyr for who would be available.
D'kere approached Z'kai with a smile, that same smile he always used when he was getting ready to ask for a favor. "Z'kai, my favorite blue riding friend. Mind if I sit?" he asked, pulling a chair out from the table and sitting.
Z'kai grinned up at D'kere. "Go ahead, take a seat. Let me guess, your weyrmate has a special request for a bedroom adventure and you've decided to go along with it?" he asked, winking.
"You wish," D'kere shot back with a grin of his own. "But you're not completely off base, this is a bedroom request."
"Don't worry, the only way I'll wind up with Talwynn is in a flight. She's scary, you know. Very intense." Z'kai had won one of Riveth's flight once and had been impressed by the claw marks he'd worn after.
He sobered up and stabbed a tuber with a fork. "Weyrlings?"
D'kere grinned regarding the remark about Talwynn's intense nature. She was intense, that's what he liked about her. "Yes, one Weyrling to be exact. It's G'nir's nephew, A'nir, rides Green Iebrath."
"G'nir's nephew rides green?" He raised an eyebrow. "Not weyrbred, I take it?"
"No, not even close. His family locked him in his room and refused to let him out when they found him kissing a stablehand." D'kere rolled his eyes a little. "G'nir had to go and retrieve him. He had no family at the Hatching, just G'nir. Since he idolizes his uncle, it was a little easier for me to take care of this matter." A'nir hadn't been shy when he came and asked D'kere to help find someone, but he had been a little nervous since he'd not had the opportunity to really get to know anyone that well at Dragonsfall.
Z'kai winced. "I remember all too well how hard it is to come out with family who aren't weyfolk. Glad G'nir got him out of there. I'd be happy to meet with him and bolster his confidence, if you know what I mean."
"Thank you, I know he'll appreciate it. At least with weyrbred Weyrlings, they might already have someone in mind or a friend, or something."
"he didn't have any close clutchmates who might be in the same situation?" he asked with a little surprise.
D'kere shook his head. "His closest friend was T'leri and since that's not an option...." The bronzerider spread his hands open.
"Oh, that's awkward," Z'kai agreed. He thought about it for a moment, and then mused, "Wonder if their dragons will wind up together? If the riders are friends..."
"Based off conversations with A'nir, I believe he's hoping for just that, although I'm not sure T'leri would be as enthusiastic about the idea," D'kere chuckled. Some bronze and brownriders really detested waking up to a male greenrider after a flight, but perhaps because of his weyrbred nature, D'kere didn't see the big deal. A flight was a flight was a flight, he thought.
"I feel like a bet ought to be placed, just to make it fun." Z'kai reached for his klah and found he'd drained it all. "Anything else interesting going on with the weyrlings?"
"Nah," D'kere said. "They've been a relatively drama-free group," he lifted up his hand, fingers crossed. "Although we still have the Blooding coming up."
"That must be the hardest time for you, huh?" he asked.
"It can be. I mean as much as you try to get them ready, some of them don't take things seriously until they've got a live threadspore wriggling across them." The bronzerider shuddered.
Z'kai reflexively shuddered. "That's terrifying. I hope you don't lose any of them."
"Me too," D'kere said. For whatever reason, he felt especially close to this group of Weyrlings, perhaps it was because they had watched a dragonet die on the Sands at their Hatching, or maybe it was because his weyrmate's brother was in the group. "Well, thank you for your help, Z'kai," D'kere said as he stood. "I'll let A'nir know I have everything worked out and I'll send him in your direction."
"I'll have Lakiath keep an ear out for his green. Wouldn't hurt for the dragons to introduce themselves," he mused.
"One last question," he said before D'kere could escape. "Kaivras, in the Candidate classes, he's my son. Thought maybe you taught him at some point."
"I did," D'kere confirmed.
"he hasn't given you any trouble, has he?"
"Not a bit...." D'kere trailed off, and then arched an eyebrow. "Why? Should I be expecting some?"
"He's impulsive and energetic, and he didn't Impress in the last clutch. I think he's pretty let down about that, but every time he sees me, it's all smiles for Father and 'of course everything is fine'. I worried he was more down and just won't tell me. And when he's down, he gets itchy."
"I haven't noticed anything," D'kere admitted, "but the Candidates see Yanley more than they do me. She might know better."
"I'll take the time to speak to her. Thanks for letting me know."
"Will do, oh," D'kere turned, "and don't forget to invite me to the next night of dragonpoker. I have marks to spend."
"You got it," he said with a laugh. "I'm always happy to take them away."
