Location: Sunstone Seahold
Date: month 2, day 15 of Turn 10

Riadem waited in his mother's office, seated in the chair as he
drummed his fingers against the arm. It was going to be a difficult
conversation, but one that was necessary if he was going to give
Noriya everything that she deserved. In the past two months, he'd been
able to slip by Lady Brina's firm gaze, encountering Noriya in the
gardens or had arranged to meet her for quiet walks around the hold
with her maid as a chaperone. His mind drifted as he thought of her.
She was everything that he wanted in a woman. Sweet tempered,
intelligent, well-mannered, and so beautiful it made his guts ache.
The thought of her smile warmed him to his very center; that sweet
smile had wormed its way into his heart more quickly than he'd ever
thought possible. He'd known within the first month of speaking to her
that she was the one for him. He wanted her for his wife.
A mere Sr. Journeyman Healer would have little to offer such a fine
lady, but...the more he thought of it, the more he realized that he
did have something to offer. Something that his mother had access to,
but was not in control of. Something that now he wanted.
He looked up as his mother entered, still showing a healthy glow from
her time away. It looked good on her, he had to admit; there was a
healthy flush to her cheeks that hadn't been there before and an ease
about her shoulders that had been lacking. "Hello, Mother."
Yriadha smiled briefly and sat behind her desk. "Good afternoon. I'm
sorry to have kept you waiting, but I was delayed."
"Lord Bryvin needed your assistance?" Riadem inwardly cursed himself
for the remark. The last thing he needed to do right at this moment
was anger her. He needed her help.
Yriadha's eyes narrowed as she stiffened. "No, actually." Her voice
was clipped short. "Yavin has a cold and was being fussy."
"I apologize. It was wrong of me to imply anything untoward."
"Indeed." Yriadha poured a cup of tea for herself, paused then poured
a cup for her son as well. "You normally don't visit me here, Riadem.
What did you need?"
"I mean to ask Lady Noriya to wed me." He took the cup of tea, enjoying the
surprise flickering in his mother's expression.
"Ah. It's rather soon, don't you think? Not that I disapprove. It's a
fine match for you." She sipped her tea. "But you don't need my
consent for that, son."
"No, I don't." He admitted. "But I do need something else to ensure
that her father will accept my suit."
Yriadha's brows rose. "And what's that?"
"I want to see my grandfather's will." Riadem sat up, setting down the
cup on her desk.
"Riadem..."
"Mother, I'm the eldest son. There is no cause for Lord Bryvin to
maintain control of your properties when I am of age. For me to marry
Lady Noriya and give her the life she deserves, I need to show that I
am a man of property. By rights, it should come to me."
Yriadha hesitated, speaking slowly. "It might be best for you not to
have those properties yet. You're a fine young man and a good Healer.
You are respected here and she's not her family's sole heir which
would necessitate you having control of that land. Perhaps if I spoke
to Lord Bryvin about granting you my stipend it could..."
"No, mother. I would like to see the will and all documents related to
it. I am the _eldest_. I am your heir." Riadem's voice firmed. "I
received a message from Bortem. Apparently the Weyr greatly agrees
with him and he has no interest in it. That leaves me alone and I'm
sorry, I know you love him, but Yavin can't legally be considered,
especially since his 'parents' are our cousins that never even existed
in the first place." He ignored the glare and continued. "This is my
birthright, Mother. I am your _son_ and I am asking you for your help.
I rarely ask you for anything for myself, Mother. Please. This is for
my future and the woman I want nothing more than to wed."
Yriadha sighed and closed her eyes, nodding slowly. "Very well. I have
no objections. But Lord Bryvin has it in his office. This is something
that will have to be discussed with him." And since their argument
about Oufelle, she'd been rather stiff and unwelcoming to the Lord
Holder. Shaffit, she'd have to bend and relent. But as she looked up
at Riadem, she knew she would.
"Thank you. Can you arrange it?" Riadem exhaled with relief.
"I will ask. I can't promise more than that. Whether or not he agrees,
I can't force."
