Seeing Leora in the hallway, K'mai hurried to catch up with her. "Hello,
Leora," he said with a ready smile.
The yong girl smiled, returning his easily. "K'mai, hello." She paused
for her favorite bluerider. "How've you been?"
"Good. How are you and those talented fingers doing?"
Leora blushed. K'mai always knew exactly what to say to provoke such a
reaction. "Increasing in skill daily. How's that darling blue of yours?"
"Wonderful, as always," he said with a fond smile.
Leora paused a moment. It had been a while since they had last spoken.
The last time she had really spent time with K'mai she had been crying
of L'maret and ended up kissing K'mai for his sweetness. But since then,
they had hardly spoken. She wondered sometimes if somehow she had done
something wrong. They seemed to be friendly enough, though. "Where are
you headed?"
"I was heading down to the lake to . . . enjoy the scenery," he replied.
"... May I join you?" The young healer was a little tentative about
being so forward, but... she missed him - and he probably wouldn't mind
a woman being a little aggressive.
"Of course!" K'mai offered her his arm. "So what's been going on in your
life lately?"
Leora took it gently. "L'maret came back..." Her voice was barely above
a whisper.
"Is he bothering you?"
"No..." Leora answered truthfully. "We haven't even spoken yet. I
just... I just don't want to be hurt again."
"Of course you don't," K'mai said gently. "Do you care for him?"
"I don't even know anymore. I was so convinced for so long that I did
care for him, I'm not sure if I still feel for him, or I'm just so used
to caring that I don't remember what it's like not too."
"Well, give it time, and don't try to feel something that you really
don't," the bluerider said as he led her down the hall.
Leora nodded to herself. "I'll try." She took a deep breath and sort of
sighed. "How have you been, really?"
"The life of this bluerider has been good, for the most part," he
smiled. "But I have missed you."
The healer smiled, flattered. "Really?"
K'mai returned the smile, his blue eyes twinkling. "Yes."
Leora blushed and looked away. "I've missed you, too." She was beginning
to understand that the way she felt about L'maret wasn't all that
different from the way that she felt about K'mai...
"It's always nice to hear that a beautiful young woman has missed me."
K'mai thought her blushing was terribly cute.
"Well it's equally nice to hear that an handsome, experienced, bluerider
misses me, too."
"And she flatters too!" He chuckled. "Be careful Leora, or you might
steal my heart away," K'mai said with a wink.
"Who says that's not the plan?" Leora dared a little outright flirtation.
His eyebrows rose. "Oh, ho! If that's the case, you're already well on
your way."
Leora couldn't keep up the act any longer; she giggled and looked away.
"All right, then."
"You're so adorable when you do that," he said.
She grinned and looked him straight in the eyes. "Really?" K'mai was
always so charming.
His smile broadened. "I think it would be hard for you _not_ to be
adorable, Leora."
"Stop." She said gently, but seriously. She was used to most parts of
weyr life after the months she had spent in River Bluff, but such open
courtship still gave her cause to pause. "I already care for you, you
don't need to flatter me anymore..."
"I'm sorry. Sometimes I get carried away," K'mai said.
Leora decided she had one more in her. "As long as you carry me with
you." She didn't look at his face to see its affect.
The bluerider chuckled. Leora was certainly getting bolder. "I would be
happy to."
