"Rough first day?" Saibra's voice came from the direction of his office door.

"First day?" K'yne repeated dazedly, looking up from the many scattered hides that were littering his desk.

"Today's your son's first day in the creche, isn't it?"

K'yne rocked back in his office chair, expression softening at the mention of Keriv. "Yes, it is his first day in the creche. I'm sure it's much harder on Erivana right now than me."

Saibra, holding a stack of hides under her arm, remained in the doorway. "Is Erivana going to need her own weyr now?" She had been under the impression that the greenrider moved in with K'yne for the sake of her pregnancy and to allow the brownrider to help out with the infant - but now that the baby was in the creche...

"Honestly? I don't know."

"You haven't talked about it?" she arched an eyebrow.

"Not really. I think Erivana might be under the assumption that the only reason she is in my weyr is because of Keriv."

Saibra studied the brownrider, seeing little things in his expression that others would probably miss. She had known him for most of her life, after all. "That's not the only reason then?"

K'yne looked up at the goldrider, the woman he had loved for most of his life, an unrequited love that he had buried deep inside. "No, it's not the only reason."

"Have you told Erivana that?"

"I think I have tried, but I feel like... She's not taking my words seriously, or my intentions." K'yne was beginning to worry that he might lose the only woman, besides Saibra and Octkima, that had ever managed to occupy a part of his heart. "Our relationship isn't like.... Well, it's not like what I felt for you," he put it in past tense to keep Saibra from freaking out, "and it's not like what I felt for Ocktima, either. My relationship with Erivana started off on a different foot and now it's like we can't find our stride."

Saibra didn't wish any ill on K'yne, they had their share of misunderstandings, and Faranth knew that they had shared more than one heated word over the Turns, but at the end of the day, he was family. "Now that there is no baby in the weyr, why don't you try dating and pursuing her as you normally would."

K'yne gave a mirthless laugh. "The last person I pursued was Ocktima. The other women between then and now have all just been... Filler material. Something to help pass time."

"Well, I suggest then, if you don't want Erivana to become 'filler' that you start showing her the sort of attention that a young greenrider wants." Saibra's gaze held his, unwavering.

"What sort of attention?" he asked, puzzled.

Saibra rolled her eyes. "You're more than a pretty face, K'yne, use that brain. Erivana is young and probably wants all of those romantic things promised in harper tales."

"Harper tales?" K'yne croaked. He had done those sorts of things for Ocktima, he remembered the flowers and the holding hands and such.

"That's right. If you're not up for that, then you'd better cut it off now." Saibra straightened. "I'll leave you to think, I have to get these hides to R'enh."

K'yne waved, but he barely saw Saibra as she left. He was instead puzzling out what he could do to make the young woman living with him stay, if indeed she was thinking of leaving.
