Talwynn fidgeted as she waited in the small, private room she'd been ordered to stay and wait in. She knew she was going to be called up by the Weyrleaders in order to talk to them. She knew it involved D'kere. Whatever was going on, it made her worry about him. Even Kenirath saying he wasn't harmed hadn't really reassured her much.

It didn't help that they were on maybe not bad terms. It had been bad terms, when they'd fought. She'd been furious at him two nights ago. And while after her flight, it looked like they were on the way to patch things up, she hadn't gotten to speak with him again. So she didn't know where they were standing with each other, and now this.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, trying to think back to happier times. Like right after Turn's End, when she'd taken him out for a meal.

**Flashback**

"I'm glad I saved these marks from transport duty," Talwynn said to D'kere as they walked into the tavern they'd chosen to have an evening out at. "It feels really nice to be able to treat you to something."

D'kere gave Talwynn's hand a squeeze. "I'm honored that you would spend your marks on me."

"I liked the idea of a quiet night out, the two of us, away from the Weyr and any potential interruptions. Glad G'nir let you get away." His duties meant he was more frequently interrupted than anyone who didn't work with weyrlings, and she'd learned to live with it, but hated it sometimes.

"I told G'nir if someone contacts me tonight about a Weyrling I will throw them from the Star Stones." D'kere grinned a little as he pulled out Talwynn's chair at their table.

She began to laugh. "I hope that scared sense into them all. Ever regret being on the weyrlingstaff? When it gets this busy?"

"Sometimes," he admitted as he waved the waitress over with a flick of his fingers. "Can we get a bottle of red wine." The waitresses bobbed a curtsy and went to retrieve it. "It's rewarding too, though."

"I imagine so. The seem to really like you. I know I've seen some worse Weyrlingmasters, had one I was less impressed by. Still, do you ever wonder about doing something different?"

D'kere shrugged his shoulders. "Not really. I guess if I wasn't working with Weyrlings, I would just be a regular wingrider and focus more time on dragonhealing."

The waitress came back with wine and handed them both a menu. Talwynn ran her fingers down it and said, "What are you thinking?"

"I am thinking," he said slowly, eyes trailing over the hide menu. "I want the spicy fried fish with a salad, please." The bronzerider handed his menu back to the waitress.

Stews were common at Dragonsfall, and Talwynn wanted something different, so she said, "I'll take the grilled wherry with the spicy sauce, and the rivergrains."

Ordering done, she then said, "I've been missing Teseada lately since she left for Barrier Lake. I'm happy she has a shot at being the Weyrwoman there, and I hope she makes it. But she's the clutchmate I was closest to, and she was the last gold that Jaela's Calyth hatched, and it always seemed like she'd stay here forever."

"Yeah," D'kere agreed. He had been born and raised at Dragonsfall, so he remember many different leaders from over the Turn. "You know, I think Saibra's been the longest lasting Senior Weyrwoman we've had."

"I think so. Certainly a very stable one. And I'm not just saying that because she was gracious enough to let me back in her wing," she said, grinning.

"You earned it," D'kere said, raising his glass of wine in a little mock toast.

"All because of you," she replied.

D'kere waved off the credit as the food was placed before them. "Everything you do it is your own iron-will that does it. That's what I love about you."

"That's why I was encouraged to stand for the gold egg. Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if I'd Impressed Onnyth. But...I mean, could you see me on a gold? I _like_ flaming Thread directly."

"I can see you on a gold," D'kere said, smiling around the bite of food in his mouth. "You have the sass, the independence, the stubbornness."

"Lots of parts of being a goldrider sound boring, though I wouldn't tell Teseada that to her face."

D'kere agreed. "It seems like a lot of hidework and dealing with people that have problems.... Wait... that sounds like being a Weyrlingmaster, too."

She outright laughed at that. "You should quit. Just fly, like I do."

"Nah," he shook his head good-naturedly, "I like it too much just to quit."

**End Flashback**

The meal had been very tasty, the long walk they'd taken under the sky after it had been soothing and fun to flirt during, and then they'd gone back home to the weyr and had one of the most enjoyable nights that they'd had in _quite_ some time. She smiled at that memory. Yes, it had been a good time. D'kere had always been supportive of her and believed in her. Letting their bad feelings over a misunderstanding get in the way was. Well, it was unfortunate. She'd need to apologize to him.

Later. Once she'd talked to the Weyrleaders and figured out what was happening.
