Description: A bronzerider applies to join Dragonsfall.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 2, day 16 of Turn 10
Notes: Mentioned: Chioneth
Given how much transfer paperwork was flying all around Pern right now,
with Barrier Lake Weyrhold opening to cover the old River Bluff territory and
needing to bolster its wings to a full complement rather than the
opening partial staff, and riders wanting to go there, and then Weyrs needing to
make sure they had enough staff for their own territory... Well, when
L'val's wing at Rising Moons was broken up and his riders redistributed
to other parts of the Weyr or other Weyrs, and he put in his transfer
application to Dragonsfall, he expected it might take a long time to
hear back.
It was a pleasant surprise to hear from Kyverth one day that Erdenth had
an appointment for him. He headed on over to Dragonsfall and reported to
the Weyrleader's office, knocking crisply on the door.
"Come in," K'reyel put down the stylus he was using to scribble notes on
a hide before writing up a report for the archives, and this was just the
distraction he needed to avoid completing it.
L'val had made sure his hair was as tamed as could be and his facial
hair shaved before he came on out, but he still tugged his riding jacket to
make sure it was in place neatly before entering. "Thank you for making the
time to see me, Weyrleader K'reyel. How is Erdenth doing? And you and your
family?"
"He's good," replied K'reyel as he gestured to a seat. "Still hoping
that Chioneth chooses him next time."
"The desire of every bronze, I'm sure. He was chosen at River Bluff
once, wasn't he?" L'val asked as he sat. he'd done his research.
"He was indeed," K'reyel said, a note of pride in his voice as he spoke
of his dragon. "He likes the idea of being in charge during fall." Clearing
his throat, he continued. "So how come you asked to transfer to
Dragonsfall?"
"With the shuffling of riders around to Barrier Lake now that it's fully
open, Rising Moons is shifting its own wings around. Mine is being
disbanded and our riders absorbed into other wings. Disrupting that got me
thinking. I've spent my entire Impressed life in a single Weyr, and maybe that
means I should challenge myself to seek out a diversity of experience and do
something new. I grew up at Opal Cove, and thought maybe Dragonsfall
would have a space for me."
"We always welcome experienced riders," K'reyel said as he took notes.
"Tell me about your experience at Rising Moons, any leadership roles?"
"Leading a nine, wingthird, wingsecond for the past Turn and a half."
His Wingleader at Rising Moons had been traditionalist, didn't want blues or
greens in the 'third position and preferred to keep it for young bronzes
and browns to mentor.
"And are you expecting a similar role here?"
"There's a difference between liking and expecting, isn't there? Doesn't
every bronzerider _like_ the idea of being a wingsecond or wingleader?"
L'val joked, flashing a quick grin that made his face light up.
In a more serious tone, he continued, "I'd be surprised if you trusted
someone new enough to offer him such a position immediately. There'd be
a lot I'd have to learn at a new Weyr first before that would be a good
idea. Your territory has to be learned, flying patterns both in a single wing
and as a Weyr will be different, and a man needs to know them himself
first."
L'val's words made a lot of sense, thought K'reyel. Far too many
expected to jump in at the top without preparation. He nodded as he made notes.
"That sounds sensible. Would you be bringing a partner with you?
Children?"
"No partner, but one daughter. I don't need to take up one of your
family weyrs," he promised.
"Is there anything else I need to know, to help with wing placement?"
asked K'reyel.
"I know allotting bronzes can be harder. I'm used to mid- and low-
altitude wings, the one that was just dissolved was low-altitude. Of course I'm
flexible with where you need me," L'val replied.
Realizing he hadn't brought it up yet, he added, "I do have one other
talent. I can hear dragons who aren't my own. It's been useful in the
past."
"Oh?" There was a very interested note in K'reyel's voice. "I can see
that coming in very handy." Hearing other dragons was very rare, they could
talk to other people, but most chose not to. However those who could hear and
speak to all dragonkind were incredibly value.
"It's been very useful and also very distressing, depending," he
admitted.
"I used it as a wingsecond to keep an eye on where everyone was during
Fall, and I've especially found it useful integrating weyrlings into the wings
when they're still nervous."
"I can imagine," K'reyel said approvingly. "Do you have any questions
for me?"
L'val considered the matter. "Anything big you think I should know about
transferring to Dragonsfall specifically? Anything that struck you as
very different when you transferred in that you wish someone had warned you
for, or that you found you really liked about the place or people?"
"I'd warn you about the weather, but I'd imagine winters are pretty
similar, and you already have heavy clothing?" K'reyel said. "Riders who transfer
in from coastal areas often have trouble adjusting."
"Rising Moons is a little warmer in that we have less snow, but we still
got some. Did you have a hard time with it?" he asked. "I'm actually from
the Opal Cove territory, so that's something I'm looking forward to is
getting to know that area again."
"It can be a shock to the system, when there are days that are below
freezing with nothing but snow and ice..."
L'val laughed. "I like it. Dragonsfall's a pretty Weyr. I think I'll
like it here, assuming…" He trailed off, a hopeful note in his tone.
"You have your transfer, welcome to Dragonsfall." K'reyel said,
completing the sentence.
L'val immediately saluted. "Thank you, sir. I look forward to the
opportunity to fly with you!"
