Settling into a new Weyr was a brand new experience for L'val. He had spent all of his time since Impression at Rising Moons, and knew the physical layout, and the people, and what his place was. Adjusting to Dragonsfall was still somewhat of a challenge, in that he had to get to know all of the people. It was one thing to get to know his fellow wingriders, and other dragonriders. He did have an advantage with that. But he made sure to put effort into getting to know the lower cavern workers as well. There were just so many people to meet. Plus, learning the layout of the Weyr itself, and its territory. That was something he wanted to make sure he knew well. In short, he was keeping himself very busy.
It was after a day of drills, and L'val had noticed something going on in his group of nine. One of the blue dragons was complaining about a pain in his wing, but his rider hadn't asked to be taken out the formation and sit out the drill. As it went on, he saw the blue listing slightly and losing spacing. After the drill, he waited to see if the bluerider was going to say anything to any of the wing's staff. But the young man walked away with his dragon, instead. He frowned as he saw it.
Wingsecond K'yne was leading today's drills and he hadn't left the practice grounds yet, so L'val raised a hand to catch his attention as he walked over.
K'yne glanced up and motioned the other bronzerider over. "L'val, what can I do for you?"
"I wanted to bring up something I noticed in my nine today, sir," he said.
"Does it have to do with J'sayr?" K'yne guessed.
L'val nodded. "You saw he was out of alignment? Tahgith said his wing was hurting to his rider. Twice."
"You were probably at a much better vantage point to see what was happening than I was." K'yne admitted, although Arinoth had noted to him that the blue wasn't exactly where he should be at all points of practice.
"He was supposed to stay on my left and didn't remain there," he agreed.
"And he didn't stay behind to talk about it," K'yne said with a sigh. Which meant he would have to call the bluerider to his office instead. It was much easier when a rider just owned up to the troubles they were having during practice.
"I was hoping he'd have enough sense to, but he didn't." L'val shook his head. "That's why I wanted to let you know. I'm just a bronzerider here, but the instinct to watch out for my wingmates remains."
K'yne respected that. "We need more riders who look out for their wingmates." He spoke with Arinoth, making sure the brown had already contacted J'sayr's blue.
"It's part of the job of being a in the wings, you look out for each other. And Tahgith really was complaining about it, I'm worried he strained something."
**Tell Tahgith to report to the dragonhealers, as well.** K'yne told Arinoth. "You been in wing leadership before?" he asked the bronzerider, who he guessed to be somewhat younger than himself.
"I've been a wingsecond before, like you. Rising Moons closed my wing with the reshuffling of riders." He gave a half-shrug with one shoulder, it was what it was.
K'yne wasn't surprised, L'val struck him as someone that had previous experience. "I understand completely, we lost quite a few riders ourselves with Barrier Lake opened. "Your presence here is appreciated, it's always great to have another rider in the wing with experience."
"Thanks you," he said, falling into step with him. "It's also nice to be back in this area. I was born at Pearl Shoals Hold, and was wondering if I could make a request for sweeps or watch duties in the region. I imagine for awhile you'll want to rotate me around so I learn all the lands, but it's a nostalgia feeling."
"Sure," K'yne agreed. "I think your file said that you can hear all dragons as well? We'll have to find a way to use that talent in 'fall."
"That was actually how I noticed Tahgith was in pain. I likely would have seen the formation slip with me eyes, but I heard the way he told his rider, and J'sayr shouldn't have ignored it. I know he's young and eager to prove himself, but still."
"I imagine being able to hear them all can get overwhelming in the middle of 'fall when so much communication is happening. How do you stay focused?" K'yne asked.
"How do you handle hearing the person you're talking to in the middle of an incredibly loud Dining Cavern with a ton of conversations going on? Something in the mind lets you pick out the one you want, right?" he asked.
"I build a focus on just talking to Kyverth and imagine that I'm in a bubble where I'm only hearing what's right around me. I focus on learning the most important voices, too. For now, since I'm new to the wing, its Arinoth and Mnoranth and my trio who I'm getting to know. I'll work on the rest of the nine, then work out the wing. Things break into my attention though - golds can't be shut out, pained dragons."
"That sounds equally fascinating and frustrating," K'yne said, glad that he didn't have such a gift to contend with - he could barely get his own thoughts straight.
"It was a lot to learn, but so was getting used to talking to Kyverth, or flying," he admitted.
K'yne had thought about it that way, but he supposed it was just like learning any other skill. "Still, I'm glad it's you and not me," he said with a good nature clap to L'val's shoulder.
