Kapera

}:Mine invites yours to a working lunch,:{ Riyanth told Onnyth, a slight
puzzlement in her tone.

Kapera met Teseada in one of the side rooms off the dining hall,
designed
for between 4 to 10 people normally if you pushed tables together to
expand.
Half of it had food spread out and half of it had papers. "I absolutely
could not look at my office anymore and I was starving," she confessed.

"I know the feeling," Teseada said. "Sometimes I think those hides
breed,
just to torture us."

"I think they have to. I really appreciate Jayzine and her staff for
taking
care of so much of the domestic ends, but there's so much that's our
responsibility. And isn't it funny how no other goldriders have wanted
to
come since the leadership got settled?"

"Tell me about it," said Teseada with a heartfelt groan. "Or maybe
they're
allergic to hidework?"

"I used to be allergic to hidework, preferring the more glamourous
duties,"
she joked. "There was a time when you probably hated me a bit for that."

"Hate was probably too strong a word," replied Teseada. "Let's just day,
extreme dislike." But there was a smile on her face as she surveyed the
stack of work. "We really need help with this."

"Well, I hope I'm better at it now." She'd been nervous about her and
Teseada at Barrier Lake when they'd both arrived, wondering how they'd
get
along. After all, when they'd both been at Dragonsfall... well,
honestly,
the younger woman had in many ways been the more mature of them. Kapera
had
worried that there would be grudges held about her only-adequate
performance. But she had really appreciated that Teseada hadn't seemed
to
hold a grudge, and they had clicked into a good working rapport.

"Maybe we could use someone with archive training. Acquire a new Harper?
See
if any riders have experience to help out part-time?"

"Now you say that," began Teseada, "I have an idea. One that could work
out
really well for us. Especially now." A hand drifted up to cradle her
stomach
for a moment, a gesture that might be missed by the less observant.

"I'd be delighted to hear the idea. What is it?"

"Well, " she began. "I think we need an assistant, someone who knows the
demands of a rider, but someone who also knows the work of the
headwoman's
staff. Someone who can take some of the load from us, and also work with
the
Headwoman on the domestic side too. Like a liaison, and with some
responsibility."

"A special liaison between the goldriders and the Headwoman. That sounds
like a niche it might be hard to fill, since it's tapping multiple areas
of
expertise. Do you have someone in mind?"

"I do, as a matter of fact," Teseada said. "Ninaine would be perfect for
the
role. She's got the attention to detail we need, and understands the
demands
on us as riders."

"Ninaine…" Kapera said. "She was a grounded rider who'd applied to come
here
not long ago, yes? Do you know her well?"

"I do, she's N'call's weyrmate, and her children are Tecall's siblings."
Teseada paused, "And with a new one possibly coming soon," he voice
trailed
off a bit. "I'm seeing the healers later because I think I might be
expecting, having someone to watch the children as well as help us out
would
be amazing."

Kapera listened to what she was saying and thought privately it sounded
almost more like Teseada wanted her around to have a chance to offload
their
children to Ninaine - more like a nanny at the Holds than a Weyr
fostermother. Did she actually think Ninaine's experience would help, or
was
she just trying to ease her own burdens?

"Congratulations if you are," she said to the other goldrider. "That's
certainly big news for you and N'call. Though I thought you two were
weyrmated, or on the way..."

"It's complicated," Teseada said. "And neither of us wants to put him in
a
situation where he has to choose. So besides the fact that Ninaine would
be
great at the admin work, she understands the running of a place as
complicated as a weyr. That and my children will have their siblings
around,
unlike how I grew up. My father didn't tell me about his other life
until
they were all grown up. "

"I certainly understand complications. Far better that you're all being
honest for the children, certainly. And it sounds like it would be good
for
all of you." It's not like Kapera could judge a complicated
interpersonal
life, even though hers had never involved babies.

"I'd originally denied her transfer request when we were in desperate
need
of either riders with Craft training to help build and active
threadfighters, no space for dead weight with us starting up. At the
time
she hadn't listed anything she could provide for us. You think that
Ninaine
is grounded from Fall, she has the time to do the admin work as a
full-time
position, rather than taking another rider or a member of the
headwoman's
current staff off of it?"

"I think she could do it, and she might be able to help the weyrling
staff
out as well with their admin, which would help them too. I bet if we sat
down with Jayzine, and K'lvin too we'd find enough things that she could
take on, that would give us back some time to spend with the wing."

"You've sold me. I'll invite her over for a meeting. Do you mind
arranging
one with Jayzine and K'lvin?"

"Not at all," Teseada smiled. "Shall we make a start on this little lot
for
the moment?"

Kapera sighed. "Unfortunately, I suppose we must. Should we get the
injury
reports out the way, so we can get to happier things?"

"That sounds like a plan," Teseada said as she reached for the pile of
hides.
