**Ah, some peace and quiet at least.** H'riv thought as he lay on his side, working on some electrical wiring underneath the new cooling units in Barrier Lake's kitchens. He had his magnification goggles on, something he had not needed twenty Turns ago, as he carefully wrapped and braided the different colored wires.
In all his Turns, H'riv never would have thought that the _Weyr_ would be the place where he found some peace and solitude, but after the last few sevendays of running back and forth between Jalodwyn, Thayde, and Enamra.... "I need a vacation," he muttered under his breath.
"That bad is it?" a feminine voice said near him.
"Oh!" He raised up quickly, surprised by the nearness of the voice and clocked his head over a low hanging pipe. "Agh!" The brownrider raised a hand to his head.
"I'm sorry," the voice chuckled with sincerity. "I didn't mean to startle you."
H'riv blinked, momentarily wondering why he couldn't focus his eyes on the woman in front of him. Had he really hit his head that hard?
Gyllie laughed behind her hand as the man blinked at her, his eyes magnified beyond belief by the goggles that he wore.
"Oh," it struck H'riv then that he couldn't see because of his goggles, and he pushed them up into his hair with a little grin. "Ah, now that's better." His eyes could now take in the full effect of the woman who had knelt by him. She had a glorious mane of dark red hair, skin like cream, and an ample bosom that immediately drew his attention.
"I didn't mean to distract you," Gyllie said with a playful smile, not at all put off by the man's obvious glance at her cleavage. She had been around enough men in her life to know how they operated.
H'riv laughed a little. "Yes, well, it would be very difficult not to be distracted by you."
Gyllie liked that compliment. "I'm Gyllie," she said, sticking out her hand.
H'riv took it, mentally noting the work callouses on her palms and fingertips. "I'm H'riv, is a pleasure to meet you."
"Likewise," she nodded. "I believe you were saying something about needing a vacation?"
"Oh," he chuckled, "not from this," he jerked his chin toward the machine he was working on. "From my family. I love them, but they are some of the most exhausting people I know."
Gyllie gave him a calculating look. "Is this family your weyrmate?"
"No," H'riv said, not minding that she was trying to find out if he was unattached, "my brother, actually, and his wife, and his one-time mistress, and his illegitimate child."
The redhead's eyebrows shot up. "You're right, that is a family full of drama. You said the words 'wife' and 'mistress' so I'm assuming they're at a Hold somewhere?"
"A hall, actually," H'riv said, not wanting to get too detailed with the information.
"Yikes, I bet all of this is causing quite the scandal then."
"Like you wouldn't imagine," H'riv agreed.
Gyllie decided that this was a man she wanted in her bed. He had the hands of a man who knew what he was about, and that jawline with the green eyes....
"You almost done here?" she asked.
"Almost."
"I'll be waiting over there," she tilted her head toward the door, "when you're finished. I'd like to invite you to my place for a bit of... vacation time."
"I'll be done soon," he promised, and Gyllie hoped that wasn't something he would be saying later.
--
After he had finished with the wiring and packed up his tools, H'riv went to where Gyllie was waiting. "All set."
"Good," she said, pushing off of the wall and taking his hand. "So tell me a bit about yourself. Where were you before Barrier Lake?"
"Far Island," H'riv replied. "I didn't grow up in the Weyr, though, my father was a sailor and my mother a dolphineer."
"Oh, your mother was a crafter, that's scandalous down here." Gyllie said as they entered her quarters. The area was well taken care of and decorated with a nice, homey touch.
"It is in some places," H'riv agreed. He had a feeling that Gyllie didn't mind being scandalous.
Gyllie shut the door behind H'riv and slid the latch down into place. "I like being naughty," she said as if reading his mind as she began unbuttoning the front of her dress.
"I can see that," H'riv said, eyes heated with desire.
"Does that bother you?" she asked, slipping the dress over her shoulders and letting it fall to the floor, revealing that she hadn't been wearing anything, not even a shift, underneath.
H'riv had to collect his tongue from the roof of his mouth. "Not at all."
"Then you have to make me one promise...."
The brownrider raised an eyeberow.
"No falling in love." Gyllie's eyes seemed more serious.
H'riv raised his hand like he was taking an oath. "I promise, no falling in love." He'd never had a serious relationship, so this wouldn't be a problem.
"Good," Gyllie purred, approaching H'riv now and wrapping her arms around the man's neck. "Now, take me to bed, brownrider."
H'riv didn't have to be told twice.
