**Tell Bryvin first.** She repeated to herself as she approached the
door that led to his office. She'd never been inside and had never
disturbed him when he was doing his duties; she never wanted to be
thought of as troublesome, but if Lady Brina was right, and there was
no doubt that she was, he would want to know right away.
She looked at Weltine, her maid before she lifted a hand to knock.
"Can you wait outside please, Weltine? I'd like to tell him
privately."
"Of course, my Lady." The maid stepped back, a warm smile on her face
for her mistress. I'll seat myself on this bench and wait."
"Thank you." Asaile took a breath and laying one hand on her abdomen,
knocked on the door, her heart beating fast.
"Come," Bryvin called from beyond the door. His business with Pifer
was complete or as complete as it could be at that moment. He smiled
when he saw who was at the door. "Come in," he repeated and rose from
his chair.
Asaile stepped in, then swept a graceful curtsey as Bryvin rose from
his chair. When she rose, her cheeks were glowing and there was a
light of pure adoring joy in her eyes. She approached her husband,
going around his desk to stand before him. "My Lord, I have the
happiest, most wonderful news to share with you." She laid her hands
over her belly, her eyes softening. "I am carrying your child, my
Lord."
His brows rose and grin widened. He scooped her up and whirled them
both in a circle. "That is wonderful news," he said as he set her back
on her feet.
His reaction made her giggle as he twirled her, her arms wrapped
firmly around his neck. When he set her down, she felt a little dizzy
and held on to his arms as she steadied herself. "I'm so glad to have
made you happy, Bryvin." Asaile looked up at him, eyes still radiant.
"Riadem confirmed it this very morning. It's early, but..." She looked
down at her belly and then back up. "He's certain. I'm certain. He
wants me to go and have tea with him so he can instruct me on a proper
diet and what I'll need to do to stay healthy."
"Yes, absolutely," Bryvin nodded. "You do whatever he says. He knows
his stuff where this is concerned." He smiled at his still very young
bride. "You tell me if you need or want anything sweetheart," he said
and lifted her hand to his lips.
Asaile opened her mouth to speak, stopped and flushed a deep red
before bowing her head. "I do have a question, Bryvin." She looked at
him through her lashes. "My mother, she said after a wife gets with
child, a husband avoids..." she cleared her throat. "sharing a bed
with his wife until after the child is born. Will you do that?"
He sat in one of the office chairs and pulled her down onto his knee.
"Your mother told you a lot of things sweetheart. Perhaps from her own
experience with your father. But I'm not him. What do _you_ want?
Being so close to him, despite the joys of intimacy that she'd
discovered with him, was still new. Asaile's hand lifted to curl
against his chest, fingers toying with the soft material of his tunic.
It took a few moments for her to softly speak. "I would not want that.
I like you beside me and..." Embarrassed, she nibbled her lower lip,
"and...I like how you make me feel. What we do. I wouldn't want that
to stop."
He smiled and put a finger under her chin. "Then it won't stop," he
said. "But when you're tired, you tell me. You do not have to open
yourself just because it is my right. You're carrying my child and
must protect him or her. If you don't feel well or don't want to. You
tell me. Alright?" He'd never made that speech to Xeladrie because he
knew she didn't want him any more than he'd wanted her. They did their
duty by the Hold and no more than that.
When her eyes were lifted to his, they were wide in surprise. She'd
never dreamed of refusing him in any way or at any time. Permission to
refuse him? Would she ever want to? But he was telling her she had to
tell him if she didn't want to and she had to obey that. "Alright."
Then she leaned over, hesitated and gently brushed her lips over his,
initiating a kiss for the first time.
He responded to her hesitant kiss by tightening his arms around her
and deepening it. After a moment he pulled back with a smile. "A shame
I have to work," he said. "Or I'd take you to bed in the middle of the
day. Wouldn't that shock the maids?"
Her eyes were hazy from the kiss, but she giggled, burying her face in
his neck to hide her face and the rampant flush that seemed to take
over everytime she was around him. Asaile gave a little smile against
the warmth of his skin, inwardly pleased that he found pleasure in
her. "Well...can you work later? I think maybe I could send the maids
away and lock my door." She waited, uncertain if he would think she
was too forward with her suggestion.
"I would love to," he smiled. "But this meeting I cannot put off." He
smiled into her eyes. "But let's have a very private dinner in our
rooms tonight. We'll spend the entire evening together. How does that
sound?"
She nodded, a little disappointed, but that faded when he mentioned
spending the entire evening together and she brightened. He was a very
busy man and she couldn't intrude too much into the important business
of running the Hold. "That sounds lovely. I'd like that very much."
She rose, smoothing her skirts. "I'll see you this evening, Bryvin."
With the response he'd given, she bent to lightly kiss him again, then
straightened. "I love you very much."
"And I adore you," he said warmly. He picked up her hand and kissed
it. "Now go before I change my mind."
Her smile was a happy one and she nearly floated out of the room. Her
mind was filmed with visions of sweet smelling babies and warm
nighttime embraces. Life was beautiful.
Bryvin sat back in his chair and watched her go with a smile that
disappeared the moment the door closed. He really was happy about the
baby but he didn't like the game he was playing to keep her happy.
Sometimes the games he played with other people brought satisfaction
but in this case he... He stopped mid thought. Did he actually _care_
about Asaile?
