Brina

Perhaps an hour after he'd first seen Trayger dancing with Brina,
Bryvin handed Asaile off to his cousin Wirnan and crossed the floor to
her side.

"Sister," he said offering his hand. "May I have this dance?"

"Of course, brother." Brina inclined her head to the Lord and Lady she'd
just left, and took his arm as one of the harpers began a roll on a drum
with a slow crescendo, summoning the guests to the floor for a new
dance. She smiled, mischievously. "Though I'm surprised you could tear
yourself away from your new Lady. Everyone is saying what a handsome
couple you make."

He chuckled as he looked down into her eyes. "I can only say that I'm
very happy with the selection and very much of that success is due to
you." He swept her into the steps of the dance with a grin. "I
couldn't have done it without you."

"I did my best to keep the young ladies out of trouble, at least. Though
sometimes it's an impossible task." She sighed. "I hope Lady Oufelle's
parents didn't cause you any trouble. She really was a most tiresome
girl, but I never thought she'd ruin herself by running to the Weyr."

"You did well," he smiled. "I think they were aware of how headstrong
she was. At least it seemed they blustered then dismissed her. There
is no fault to you my dear sister." He assured her. "I offered them a
small bribe so I'm sure they're satisfied at this point. I believe one
of Oufelle's sisters will be marrying the gentleman they'd picked out
for her."

"I hope she'll be happier with him. No matter how foolish she's been,
it's sad to think of Oufelle being parted from her family. What must her
poor mother feel?" She could hardly imagine how she'd have felt, had it
been her own daughter. "Though I know how important the alliances we
make by marriage are, sometimes I think there's a lot to be said for a
love match."

"There is," he agreed. "My first marriage wasn't pleasant. But you
grew to love your husband I think?" He looked deeply into her eyes.
"Do you wish for a love match sister?"

Brina's cheeks colored as she remembered a certain dance, earlier in the
evening, but she kept her voice light. "What woman doesn't? Though I'm
surely past the age for harper romances now."

"I doubt that," he said gently. "You're a beautiful woman Brina. I
love you and I can't say that about many people in my life. You've
found me the perfect wife. So I promise you this, You may choose your
next husband. I will not use you for the betterment of my Hold's
relations."

"Even if I choose a handsome young guard, or a dashing pirate?" Brina
teased. She followed the dance steps into a turn, her feet as light as a
younger lady's. "My dearest wish for now is to remain with my family, if
you'll have me, and to see my niece and nephew grow up."

"Oh we'll have you, as long as you wish to stay. Sunstone will always
be your home." He smiled down at her, "I might balk at the young guard
but a dashing pirate might make the cut."

"I'll keep a look out for one," she replied, laughing. "Until then, I
hope I can help Lady Asaile to settle into her new role. I think she's
going to be a wonderful Lady Holder."

"I couldn't agree more," he said as the dance came to an end and he
led her off the floor. "But she is very young and needs the benefit of
your guidance, dear sister." He bent and kissed her hand. He looked at
her for a long moment and then turned to go back to his bride. Brina
was very good at deflection and he'd best remember that. He hadn't
mistaken the look on her face when she'd danced with Trayger. He
smiled as he approached Asaile. It obviously wasn't anything beyond
flirtation... yet.

Brina watched him go, wondering what had caused him to bring up the idea
of a marriage for her now. Could it have been the wedding ceremony that
put it in his mind, or... She felt her cheeks grow warm, thinking of how
she had danced twice with the handsome captain of the Sun's Glory.

**You are getting to be as silly as the fosterlings,** she told herself,
in quiet amusement, and headed over to greet a group of traders from the
western mountain holds. Still, she couldn't help but wonder what he had
seen...
