Thayde

The smell of cooking bacon filled the dining area of her home. It felt
almost wonderful to be doing this again; she'd missed it. Humming
softly and a bit off-key, she poured one cup of juice then a cup of
steaming hot klah to set on the table for breakfast.

Thayde had planned on being in his office early that morning, but with
Enamra's unexpected arrival home in the middle of the night, he had
pushed everything else to the back burner.

He followed his nose into the living area, his sleeping pants riding
low on his hips as he ran a hand over his bare chest and smiled at the
sight of Enamra in the kitchen and bacon in the pan.

"It wasn't a dream then," he said, slipping up behind his wife and
kissing her neck.

She cuddled back up against him and sighed with obvious contentment.
"Hmm...not a dream at all. Unless dreams smell like bacon and sleepy
man."

"My dream smells like… bacon and sexy wife. It's a good smell," he
purred in her ear.

The purr made her shiver and brought a soft laugh. "It's good waking
up with you again, you know?" She turned in his arms and kissed his
lower lip lightly. "I like it when you hold me." She slid her hands to
cup his own, then paused as she felt wrapping around one of his hands.
Stepping away, she looked down. "What happened to your hand?"

Thayde looked down at his hand and flexed it slowly, as if just
noticing it for the first time. "Oh… that." In the excitement of
having Enamra home, he'd completely forgotten about his hand and the
entire incident. "It's a long story. I'll tell it to you while we
eat?"

She nodded, a little confused, but willing. "Sure. There's klah and
juice for you. I'll dish this up." She stepped back and filled
Thayde's plate fill of bacon and small cakes covered in a sweet syrup.
Setting it on the table, she set two cakes on her own plate next to
him, then sat down.

After taking a couple of bites of his breakfast, Thayde launched into
the story of Jalodwyn's project and how they had sailed out to a
salvage site a couple of mornings back. He detailed for her how the
diving bells worked and what Jalodwyn had hoped to find in the
wreckage.

He paused for a gulp of klah before telling how he and Ada had pulled
Jalodwyn out and taken her to the surface. "So I cut my hand trying to
pry open the breach in the hull. The worst of it was when the healer
sat and picked out the individual splinters that were embedded around
the cut."

Enamra listened intently, eyes widening as she was given the details
and her own meal was forgotten. "You pulled her out and you saved
her," she stated quietly. "She could have died. You're a hero." She
sat back, feeling a myriad of emotions, some she was ashamed of and
some that were mingled with pride in him. "I suppose she's changed
her mind about things with you then. "

"I'm not a hero," he dismissed the notion with a wave of his injured
hand. "As her diving partner, I should have been by her side the
entire time. Had I been, I would have seen the hole in the air pipe
immediately, and I could have shared my air tank with her until she
was out of the breach." Thayde's jaw muscle ticked a little as he
pushed bacon crumbs around his plate with a fork. "She resented me
being there, I knew that, but you never dive alone. So when we went
down, I gave her space to do her thing without feeling like I was
hovering. Big mistake." Laying the fork down, he shoved his fingers
into his hair, regretting it immediately since his mane was still
tangled from sleep. "She's in the infirmary. That's my fault."

Enamra leaned back for a moment, then after mulling over his words,
leaned forward and took his hand. "Stop that. " hey voice was gentle,
but surprisingly firm. "It's not all your fault. She knew the risks
and rules too, didn't she? She also chose not to do the right thing
and do what she knew she should. You're both stubborn." She gently
squeezed his uninjured hand and gave a bit of a smile. "I guess you
better prepare yourself when Jalotha gets older. "

A sad smile tipped his lips as he returned her squeeze. "I don't
suppose I'll get to see much of that. I'm not allowed to see her or
tell her she's mine." He sighed a little. "Which is my fault, too."
Thayde brought her hand up and pressed his lips to her knuckles. "Have
I ever mentioned how lucky I am to have you?"

It pained her to say the next words, but she knew that Thayde now
ached to be a part of his daughter's life. It was enough now to make
it as important to her as well. "Well, maybe now she'll change her mind."
His next words and gesture made her smile. "Not enough, but you can
keep on saying it." She put down her fork and tilted her head to the
side as she took a deep breath. "You're certain Jalotha is yours,
right? Well, maybe we should all talk and maybe...well, at least we
can try to be comfortable around each other. I guess I'm willing to
try."

"We'll see," Thayde said, pushing his plate out of the way. "Thank you
for being willing. Your life would be a lot easier if your husband
wasn't a big dummy who went around putting his foot in his mouth all
the time, you know?"

"Probably." She agreed.

"Heeyyy," he wiggled his finger along one of her ticklish spots.
"You're supposed to say 'oh, Thayde, your amazing looks and perfect
body more than make up for it'," he pitched his voice to mimic hers.

She squirmed and batted at his hand. "I thought you wanted me to be
honest!" Wiggling away, she picked up her plate, grinning, then stuck
her tongue out playfully. "Go get ready for the day. "

His eyes followed the sway of her hips as she walked to the kitchen.
He wanted more of his wife but there were things he needed to do that
day. "What are you going to do today?"He asked as he carried his plate
to the sink.

She began filling the sink with water before she answered. "I think
I'm going to take a few days just to relax before I go back to
studies. I thought I might go out to the docks and have a good swim.
Just rest, I guess. I've been getting pretty tired during the day
lately."

Coming up behind her, Thayde put his arms around her, his hands going
to her stomach. "Just be careful, hm? If you want I could go too, or
you could take your sister. If you ring the dolphin bell you can get
Ada."

"I'm not going near the rocks. I may not even do that. Most of what
I've been wanting to do is nap." She leaned back against him and then
gave a slight yawn. "Actually, that sounds a bit nice. I promise that
I'll get my sister or someone else to go with me if I go, okay?" She
didn't want another accident or take any chances. Not again.

"Thank you," he pressed a kiss into her hair. "Enjoy your nap."

She nodded. "I will."
