Thayde

Thayde

Just as Wevrian had predicted, the storm that rolled towards the Dolphin Hall hit near dawn a sevenday later. The gusting gales of wind drove across the coastline, spraying water and sand around with fury.

Also, as Wevrian predicted, the storm surge brought waves up to the cliffs where the Hall was built on the safety of the rocks.

Standing out on one of the Hall's wrap-around balconies, Thayde gripped the railing with a hand to steady himself against the whipping winds.

"The apprentices are settled?" he asked loudly over the roar of the storm.

"Yes, sir. They put the final sandbags into place last night. They've been instructed to stay indoors until the storm blows itself out," Imyian called into the Hallmaster's ear.

"What did you learn from the dockmaster?" Thayde asked Nyvella.

"There were two ships bound for the Dolphin Hall. One of them had a dolphineer on board, the other did not. If they didn't know about the storm then they were likely caught right in the middle of it." Nyvella wrapped her cloak tighter around her body, but the wind kept tearing it back away.

Thayde squinted as a gust of wind brought a gritty blast of sand with it. "Be prepared. As soon as the storm is out you'll take the rescue and salvage team to check."

"We'll be ready, sir," Nyvella promised before turning and retreating inside the Hall.

Suddenly a crack of thunder exploded around them, causing all three dolphineers to flinch and step back against the protection of the Hall.

"Too close for comfort. Let's get inside." Thayde said, opening the door and motioning for Wevrian and Imyian to get inside. He cast one last glance at the dark, tumultuous sea, hoping Ada and the rest of the pod were okay, even though he logically knew that they were safe, far beneath the surface of the water in their own little world.

--

It was near dawn the next day when a pounding at his door woke Thayde. He murmured some reassurances to Enamra before crawling out of bed.

"Wa'smatter?" he slurred, opening the door to his quarters to find Wevrian, dripping with water, standing in the hallway.

"Get dressed, Hallmaster. You'll want to see for yourself."

That woke him up a little more. Rushing back to his bedroom, Thayde tore open drawers, threw on clothing, and then hurried back to Wevrian.

"What is it?" he asked, more clearly this time.

"The lighthouse," Wevrian replied, his boots squishing with water as they walked.

When they opened the door out of the Hall, sheets of driving rain stung their skin. In the early grey light of pre-dawn, they trudged towards the lighthouse that sat upon the cliff, guiding ships around the coastline of Dolphin Cove.

Except... the lighthouse was... gone?

Thayde's brow furrowed as he picked up his pace. As he neared, he could see that the foundation of the lighthouse still remained, but the rest of the stone structure lay in a crumbled heap.

"It was struck by lightning," Wevrian said as they stood, surveying the damage. "Then to add insult to injury, the lip of the cliff gave way underneath. It fell like children's play blocks."

"Was anyone hurt?"

"No one was in the lighthouse, fortunately," Wevrian said. "Imyian had already moved them all inside the main hall."

That was a relief, at least.

"Get the crews ready. We'll need to build a temporary lighthouse. Put it on the rise above the main hall. If those ships Nyvella told us about last night made it through the bulk of the storm, they'll be looking for their way home."

"Yes, sir. What should we do about this?" he gestured to the heap of rocks, wood, and stone.

"Don't worry about it now. We'll start to clean up once the storm is finished."

"We should be through the roughest part," Wevrian said. "Probably just rain today, and then by tonight the rain should have tapered off as well."

Thayde nodded. "Good. Let's go see what we can do about a temporary lighthouse, then."
