J'nic

J'nic was bursting with joy as he left K'lvin's office, although the
only signs of it were the slightly faster walk than usual and the
small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. He stopped briefly by
Raileth to share the moment. **You didn't tell him anything, right?**

}:No, and he hasn't asked:{ the green shared.

**Good.** He wanted to be able to deliver the news and see Sellek's
expression. With a final touch to Raileth's side, he strode towards
the place they had agreed to meet, and soon saw Sellek.

Even after over fourteen Turns together, just seeing his weyrmate made
his heart flutter. Knowing they could finally live together again,
after many months apart, made him feel a combination of excitement and
relief. If their relationship were more playful, he might have feigned
sadness, or at least made Sellek wait a few moments to hear the news.
But instead, J'nic let a wide smile cross his face and gave Sellek a
big hug.

"You did it," Sellek whispered, his beard tickling J'nic's neck. "I'm
so proud of you."

J'nic pulled away from the hug, taking hold of Sellek's hands to stay
close. "I'll need to speak to my Wingleader to see how many days he
wants me to stick around, but in a sevenday or two I should be here
officially."

"Good. I think I can handle that. I've missed you," Sellek said honestly.

J'nic pulled him into another quick hug. "I've missed you too. Thank
you for being so patient with me. I know it took a lot of convincing
to get me ready to come here."

"And a lot of time," Sellek added, with a small smile. Part of him
wished J'nic had made the decision to transfer much sooner. But, now
that the end was in sight, it was easy to just move on. Besides, part
of the reason he loved his weyrmate was the other man's calm,
deliberate, nature. Change came to J'nic slowly, but it did happen.
"Those weyrlings are lucky to have you."

"I hope so. And I'm lucky enough to be able to come home to you every
night. I can't wait to share a weyr again."

"I bet it will be bigger than what we had before, and have a private
bath." That would certainly be a change from Sellek's current
quarters.

The pair walked arm in arm to where Raileth was waiting for them.
Sellek greeted the green briefly, then they mounted and set off for
Dragonsfall Weyr to tell their daughter the news.

~~ A quarter candlemark later, at Dragonsfall Weyr ~~

The trio grabbed lunch and sat down, J'nic and Sellek on one side of
the table and Diara on the other. She had half a candlemark before her
next class, which was enough time to have at least an initial
conversation about J'nic's new position.

"You got the position, didn't you?" Diara asked immediately. At their
smiles she said, "I knew you would! Congratulations! How's K'lvin?"
She had seen the bronzerider a fair amount growing up, but not since
his transfer to River Bluff Weyr.

"He seems to be doing well," J'nic replied, after finishing his bite
of sausage and tubers. "It was strange for both of us, meeting again
in the context of an interview. I'm looking forward to working closely
with him and spending time with him again. Kylena is there with him."

"She must be twelve now." While the girl was three Turns younger than
Diara, they had played together a bit as weyrbrats. "When do you
move?" J'nic had been going back and forth for months, but having him
officially there would be hard to get used to.

"I'm not sure yet. You're the first person we've told," J'nic
explained. "Next, I'll go to my Wingleader and see how long he wants
me to stay here. So, don't tell Grandmother or anyone else yet."

She rolled her eyes. "I know, I know. Besides, while it's good news
for the two of you, I don't know how happy anyone in the family will
be." They were the first to leave Dragonsfall Weyr, so there were
bound to be a lot of mixed feelings.

"Luckily, we're just a quick trip /between/ away," Sellek said, which
is what they had been telling one another since Sellek had transferred
to the Weyrhold. "I know it will be strange for everyone to get used
to this latest change. We're both really excited though." He took a
gulp of water and ate some grains with a red sauce.

"We'll all be fine," she replied confidently. "Grandmother will
complain and uncle R'dir won't say anything. Aunt Jerana will be sad."
J'nic's sister was a baker and, with no dragon of her own, it was more
complicated for her to get around.

"And if anyone isn't fine, they can always join us." Sellek's tone was
joking, but he was completely serious.

She rolled her eyes again. "Just because the two of you wanted to move
doesn't mean the rest of us do. I like it here. All my friends are
here, and most of my family. I'd hate having to be the new person.
Besides," she looked at J'nic, "if I Impress, having you on the
Weyrlingstaff would be strange." She finished her meat and vegetables
and moved on to the small slice of redfruit pie.

"If you ever change your mind, just let us know," J'nic said. This
back-and-forth was a version of the same conversation they had been
having for sevendays; since the couple had decided they would both
live permanently at the Weyrhold.

"I won't," she replied confidently. While she would miss them both,
they still saw each other fairly frequently and she was comfortable
with her life now, full of Candidate classes and craft duties.

"We'll try to make every Hatching. We wouldn't want to miss such a big
day." J'nic hoped he could get away when necessary, and Sellek had
managed to step away from his duties for each Hatching since his move.

This was the part of them both transferring that worried Diara the
most. She wanted them there the day she hopefully Impressed. "If you
can't make it, I'll have plenty of family members there. It's fine,"
she lied. "Even if you can't make the Hatching, you could always come
after to meet the green... or blue." Kadira's Impression of a blue was
still the talk of the Weyr. No one knew if this was a one-time fluke
or the start of something new.

"That would be something. Or, there hasn't been a gold egg in
Turns..." the technician said with a slight smile.

"No thank you. Being a goldrider is definitely not for me." This was
another conversation they had had many times before. "I need to get to
classes. See you this restday?" The whole family met for lunch on
restdays when possible.

"We'll be there," her fathers replied. Diara gave them each a quick
kiss on the cheek and headed out.

"I still wonder if we should push her more to come with us. If she
were a few Turns younger, it wouldn't have been a question," J'nic
said wistfully.

Sellek swallowed the final bite of tubers and sausage. "That would
never work and you know it. She's a stubborn one. If we push too much,
she'll just dig in more. Hopefully she'll decide on her own that she
wants to come to the Weyrhold."

J'nic looked at her retreating form and sighed. "Hopefully."
