Some Threadfalls were harder than others. G’zan enjoyed his job very much, but sometimes it felt like Pern itself was against them, along with the Red Star: heavy winds, fog, sometimes even rain that was just enough to be annoying, but not enough to drown Thread. Injuries and casualties were the worst during difficult ‘Falls… but even in the most favorable conditions, it wasn’t without risk. How could it be, when you were fighting in midair against a mindless foe that could eat you alive if you weren’t quick enough to disappear into a fathomless void from which you could only escape if you had the presence of mind to provide a clear exit image to your fire-breathing lifemate?

It was probably for the best that G’zan didn’t think about that much.

What he did think about, however, was his wingmates who were scored. He hadn’t actually _seen_ what happened to E’kavas and Roquath, but he’d heard that they had been injured, so once Panghuth was properly bathed and seen to, he stopped by the infirmary. His friend wasn’t there, which hopefully meant that the injury was minor. So he swung by the kitchens to wheedle a wineskin, had Panghuth take him on a quick little trip to a nice meadow that he knew of, and then flew up to E’kavas’ weyr with wineskin and bouquet of wildflowers in hand.

“Hey!” he called as he clambered down from his green. Roquath had probably already announced their arrival, but hey, you never knew. “You decent in there? I’m comin’ in!”

Roquath's rumble of pleasure was what alerted E'kavas to guests. The special rumble, reserved only for flirting. No matter that Roquath still had firestone soot caked on his hide and looked like something the feline dragged in. The normalcy made him feel better, though.

"Would it matter if I wasn't?" E'kavas called back. He wasn't, or at least not to his standards, despite the relative warmth of the summer. Bandages covered a good swath of his left arm, from shoulder to wrist.

“Nope!” G’zan replied cheerfully, as he was already on his way inside. He shoved the flowers at the brownrider. “I brought you a Get Better bouquet! Glad you’re mostly okay, though. Or at least okay enough not to be laid out in the infirmary. What happened?”

}: Are you scored? :{ Panghuth asked Roquath, mildly concerned.

}: Just a little! :{ Roquath said, without a bit of pain. }: The healers gave me the gentle rubs and said it'll heal nicely. :{ He turned a little bit to show off the patched-up threadscore.

"....thank you?" E'kavas said as he took the bouquet. He considered it a moment before grabbing a glass from a cupboard (he did not have a vase), filling it with water, and setting the flowers on the table. "Wind shifted a little bit and the Thread we were going for doubled back. Roquath turns like a barge and we couldn't get out of the path fast enough." He grimaced. "/Betweened/ fast enough though. It looks worse than it is right now, with all the bandages and numbweed lathered on. I should be back in the Wings before the next Threadfall. Got a bit of my leg too." Then, with a bit of a laugh, "You can almost see the outline of where I was sitting on Roquath."

“Too bad Roquath’s not a green. Zip, zip, zip!” G’zan indicated a zig-zag maneuver with one hand. “But yeah, you must’ve /betweened/ quick -- killed it before it could do _too_ much damage. That takes skill, buddy. So much skill that you don’t even get yourself a vacation. You got injured _too_ good. As in… not _bad_. You know what I mean.”

}: Impressive, :{ Panghuth replied, because she knew he would like that, and she was feeling a bit sympathetic because of his injuries, at least. }: I’m sure you’ve been very strong and brave. :{

}: I _am_ :{ Roquath said. The praise worked, and he puffed himself up to preen.

"I know what you mean. The /betweening/ gets real good when it's the only way out." E'kavas answered. "I get a few days _vacation_, if you consider 'taking it easy' as vacation. Roquath still needs a bath and a meal tomorrow."

G’zan took a bit, exaggerated sniff. “He stinks like firestone still. It’s probably not too comfy, either. You want me to bathe him? Or help? You probably shouldn’t be moving that arm, though.”

}: Perhaps I will stay with you for a while, if you’d like, :{ the green said, eyeing him. She didn’t really _flirt_, but she occasionally showed affection in her own distant way.

}: I would like it! :{ Roquath said. He shimmied on his couch to give her space, should she wish to join him. }: As long as you don't mind the _smell_. }:

"He's not that bad!" E'kavas said, "Would you mind? I was going to see if the kids would help out, but it'd be nice to have a full-bodied adult with them. And they love you."

“‘Course I don’t mind! Just helping out a buddy, right? And the kids are just a fun bonus. I promise I’ll be careful with ‘em. I’ll only throw ‘em in the water real gentle, and only if they ask.”

}: I _do_ mind it, :{ she answered honestly. }: But I will tolerate it, for you. :{

"Oh, they love that." E'kavas said dryly. "Just try to make sure Roquath doesn't roughhouse too much. He likes to throw them too, and they shouldn't be climbing on him and agitating his 'scores."

Roquath preened, and E'kavas ignored the smugness that emanated from the part of him that was also Roquath. The brown deserved all the accolades he got today.

“Do you wanna go, too, or do you just need to rest? I can handle it, no problem, so don’t feel guilty if you just wanna sleep or something.”

Panghuth settled herself down next to Roquath, even though it sounded as if they’d soon be leaving again. A few minutes wouldn’t hurt.

"No, I should go too. The kiddos would get anxious if you three showed up without me.Just give me a minute to get dressed." E'kavas looked forlornly at what remained of his good riding jacket as he went in search for a clean shirt, gingerly pulling the sleeve down along his arm. The numbweed and the bandages did their job; he barely felt the fabric and only the discomfort of the bandages' compression. "How did you and Panghuth make out? No issues?"

“Dang near almost caught a firestone sack with my face once, but other than that, everything went pretty smooth. Panghuth’s real good at what she does.” He paused. “Not that Roquath’s not, I mean -- next time might go different for any of us. Just rollin’ the dice every time. Yours came up kind of bad this time around, is all.”

"Roquath is good at what he's good at." E'kavas agreed easily, "Quick turns aren't it. That's why we got speedy girls like Panghuth looking out for us."

“Come on -- you need a boost?” G’zan offered, unsure whether E’kavas could climb onto his dragon with one arm.

E'kavas considered it a moment, then sighed. "Yes, please."
