E'kavas

E'kavas wasn't entirely sure what he expected when he returned to his weyr that evening after leaving his kids unattended, but he certainly didn't expect G'zan casually lounging in it instead.

"Hello, _greenrider who doesn't live here_." He said as he dumped his jacket on the back of a chair, revealing a slightly-mussed outfit that matched the wildness of his hair. "Have you considered that you have your own weyr to sprawl in?" His deadpan tone has a hint of teasing in it; he didn't actually mind the surprise intrusion.

“Sure I do, but I’m all alone over there. Well… I’m alone here, too, but you’ve got snacks, and anyways, I knew somebody’d be along eventually!” He grinned at E’kavas, looking him over briefly. His grin widened. “Well well, who’d your boy chase today? Didja win, or…?”

E'kavas rolled his eyes. "That new transfer from Dolphin Cove. Persath? Periseth?" There's a brief flicker in his eyes as Roquath grumpily supplied the name, but E'kavas didn't care enough to correct himself. "A little bronze caught her. Barely out of weyrlinghood, judging by his size. Little shit."

He reached over to grab a couple crackers from the bag G'zan was holding.

G’zan held the bag out. He loved these little dragon-shaped crackers, and had already eaten up the ones he’d bought himself from the baker’s stall at the last gather, but he wasn’t about to deny E’kavas his own snacks. “Ugh, bronzes are my least favorite winners. Too many of ‘em just wanna slip out as soon as they can -- no cuddles or anything. Like oh, I see how it is: good enough to chase, but not good enough to keep, eh? Rude. Anyways, who’s the lucky loser then? You don’t look like you just walked away…”

"Those _bronzeriders_." E'kavas said as if he could relate, even as a flush crept up his cheeks. He tried to smooth out his shirt and realized he'd missed a button. "Oh, a bluerider in Cobalt. D'erik? I was…real awkward about it. I've never been good at _noticing_, you know? Some people are only there for the greenrider."

“You’re real awkward about everything, buddy,” G’zan replied fondly. “And I mean, greenriders _should_ be the stars of the show at our own flights. It’s the only time we get to be! Nothing wrong with making the best of losing, though. D’erik, huh? Hey, that’s not a bad catch, he’s cute! Nice hair. The kind you really wanna just… get your fingers in, you know what I mean? Unf.” He raised his eyebrows at E’kavas mischievously. “So… he any good?”

"Nooo- I mean of course, the green absolutely _should_ get all the attention. But I don't want to make a pass at someone that was only there because their dragon made them."

"He was fine. No one does their best work during or after a flight. Especially when their brown is prone to _sulking_." He said it out loud and pointed, enough that G'zan can almost hear the grumbling on the other end. "Myself included."

“Sounds like you’ll need to try him out again, when you’re both… uh, _sober_, I guess you could say. You know. Just to be fair.”

E'kavas cleared his throat as if that'd help the awkwardness. "Yeah, well. We're going out later. _Not like that_. Going out for klah or something. Something with good conversation and less nudity."

“Well that’s less fun, but okay, okay,” G’zan nodded. “I see where it’s going. Get to know each other. That’s nice, though. You like him enough to want to get to know him better? That says something. Sounds like your loss wasn’t a total loss, eh?”

"The loss is _never_ a loss." E'kavas clarified and made a face. He had never been a fan of Flights. "He's nice. We'll see." He paused for a moment, considering. "I can do this, right? It's been three turns since River Bluff closed."

G’zan, actually sensing -- for once -- the tone of the conversation shifting, turned to regard his friend fully. “You mean… are you _allowed_ to do this? Or can you _handle_ this? ‘Cause if it’s the first one, yeah, you are. You’re allowed to be happy, and to not feel guilty about it. And if it’s the second one… yeah, you _can_. You got this!”

"Yeah, that's what the mindhealer says, too." E'kavas said. "I just tell him that I'll do it when I'm ready, and he gives me a _look_. Anyway, I didn't mean to bum you out. What do people do for dates these days? I have been on one of them since…well, before Jevikas."

“Bummed me out?” G’zan actually looked offended. “Do I _look_ bummed out? We’re just talkin’, sometimes it’s heavy and sometimes it’s not -- me, I’m light as a feather either way. As for dates… I don’t know, buddy. I don’t really _date_, I just have fun with friends and sometimes it’s sexy and sometimes it’s not.”

He shrugged. It was unlikely that one-night-stands considered themselves “friends”, exactly, but that’s how G’zan saw everyone he interacted with.

“But if you want some ideas… sure, get some klah after dinner when it’s quieter, and sit down in the Dining Hall and talk. Go to the next gather together and dance all night. Go to your _weyr_ and dance all night. Or, uh… go cliff-diving? I don’t know. But it’s fun.”

"Cliff diving? Oh goodness, no." E'kavas said with a shake of his head. "Threadfall is dangerous enough for me. I don't need to go find other ways to seriously injure myself."

G’zan grinned slyly. “Well… he’s a healer, right? If you get hurt he can _take care of you_. Eh? _Eh?_”

"Faranth, G'zan." E'kavas laughed, though a slight blush crept up his face."'Getting nursed back to health' is at least third-date material, isn't it?"

“Second date at least, ‘cause the first is the cliff-diving that almost killed you. But yeah, I guess you’d want something quiet or whatever. The klah thing I guess. If you wanna be boring.”

"I'd rather he know that I'm boring than have that surprise come up after I recuperated from the cliff-diving incident." E'kavas joked."Trying to stay exciting sounds exhausting."

“Well, I don’t _try_. I just do what I wanna and it happens.” G’zan shrugged. “But maybe what you wanna do is different. Yeah, do the klah. Then maybe you can find out what stuff he likes, and if there’s a second date, you can do something else that you both like.”

"Yeah." E'kavas nodded, thoughtful, "With any luck we'll find at least one thing. And if we don't, that's okay too."

“_Exactly_! No pressure, buddy.” G’zan clapped him on the shoulder. “You got this.”
