It was the beginning of a pleasantly cool evening when Ellenico slung on his backpack, told his Dad he was going to play with some of the other Lower Caverns kids (and yes, he'll be back before it gets too dark, _ugh Dad_) and instead made the lofty trek through the winding tunnels and out to his buddy G'zan's weyr.
"Psst, Pang." He whispered loudly, unknowingly mimicking G'zan's rural accent in the harshness of the g. He held out a little hand for her to sniff before moving to pat her velvety snout. "Is G'zan home? I'm lookin' for him."
Panghuth, of course, didn’t answer him in so many words. She didn’t mind the little ones, so long as they weren’t too loud and obnoxious, but she had no desire to speak to anyone but her rider.
She did, however, turn her head deliberately towards the weyr interior and give a little nod.
}: You have a small visitor, :{ she warned G’zan.
**Oh yeah?** He pulled a shirt on quickly and then came out to investigate. “Oh hey, it’s little Nico! Didja bring me something? Your company?”
"Thanks, Pang!" Ellenico said brightly, giving her an extra little pat-pat on the nose for good measure. "And yeah!" He slid an arm out of his backpack so he could retrieve a small bag of dragon crackers, which he happily held out in offering. "Did _you_ get hurt in Threadfall too?"
“Me? Aw, no. Panghuth here’s the greenest green who’s ever greened. By that I mean she’s perfect.” G’zan took the offered crackers with a grin. “C’mon in! We can share ‘em!”
He turned and led the way inside, trusting that the boy would follow.
"Yeah she is!" Ellenico agreed. He cast a wistful look at the green as he followed G'zan inside, giving her a little wave. "Dad and Roqu got scored." He said, "but they're all right. And you brought him flowers?"
“Yep, I did,” G’zan confirmed, turning a chair around to offer the child a seat before sitting down in another chair, himself. He opened up the bag of crackers, stuffed a couple into his mouth, then held the bag out for Ellenico. “Thought it’d be a nice get-well present on short notice. Hope he liked ‘em! You’re not here to tell me he didn’t, are you?”
"No!" Ellenico exclaimed, "They're in a vase on the table. They look very nice." He reached a smaller hand into the bag and came out with a fistful of crackers that he dumped on the table before popping one into his mouth. "So are you guys gonna be weyrmates?"
G’zan, halfway through swallowing a mouthful of crackers, nearly choked. He beat a fist against his chest a few times, as if that would somehow help, before finally managing to get the dry crackers down. His eyes watered. “Wha..? Weyrmates? Where, uh… where’d you get an idea like that? ‘Cause of the flowers?”
"That's the rules." Ellenico said so matter of factly that he might actually be right. "Papa brought Dad flowers. And they'd get flowers for Mama on date nights." He paused for a second, chewing thoughtfully, "Are you going on dates?"
“Uh, no little buddy. We’re not… uh… dating.” G’zan regained his composure, grinning again. “That’s real sweet of you to think, though. I was just tryin’ to cheer your dad up a little after he got hurt, is all. He’s a real good friend. Sometimes you give nice stuff to your friends. You know, so they know you’re thinkin’ about ‘em.”
"Yeah yeah." Ellenico said knowingly. "Have you thought about dates? Dad's lots of fun when he's not dragonriding. And sometimes when he is, when Roquath needs a bath or his dinner and we can come too."
G’zan had not, in fact, thought about dates. He _had_ occasionally thought about less child-friendly stuff, but… well, it wasn’t child-friendly. So he wasn’t about to say so to the kid.
“Well.. have you asked your Dad if _he’s_ thought about dates with _me_?”
Ellenico looked thoughtful, as if he hadn't thought that part through. Because he hadn't. "No, but I thought you were going on dates already."
“Hmm… well, I’m not so sure what he thinks. I don’t think your Dad dates… uh, lightly. And I’m not really the dating type, you know?” He hoped he wasn’t disappointing the little boy too much. “But me and your Dad, we can be great friends for like… ever.”
"Hm." Ellenico crunched on the snacks, thinking hard. "I guess that's okay too. Dad doesn't date much either. He works a lot. Like, more than any other dragonrider I know."
“Really?” G’zan was surprised. E’kavas didn’t have any rank or special duties, as far as he knew. “What makes you think that?”
"Because he's always busy." Ellenico supplied. "Especially when we first moved here. Now I'm big enough to help with Roquath, and he does spa days with Kevia sometimes and that's nice." He took a moment to crunch on some snacks, unsure if he really wanted to say the next thing. "It's almost nice he got 'scored." He admitted. "It's been really fun the last few days."
“Aw, kid.” G’zan wasn’t quite sure what he’d call the stomach-flip emotion that the boy’s words caused inside him. “I get it. It’s just nice to have him around, huh? Have you told him how much you miss him when he’s busy?”
"Not really." Ellenico said. "He's gotta work. And fighting Thread is really important."
“You’re pretty important, too, bud. Especially to your dad.”
"Yeah, I am!" Ellenico said. "Thanks for hanging out with me, G'zan. Even if you and Dad aren't going to be a couple. I should probably get going; I told Dad that I'd be back before it got too late."
G’zan patted him on the shoulder. “Any time, buddy. My weyr’s yours. Uh, so long as you knock or check in with Panghuth first.”
"Yeah, that's what Dad says too. Always check before going into someone's home." Ellenico repeated. "I'll tell Dad you say hi. See ya!"
